Per-Mile Driving Tax

San Francisco's Metropolitan Transportation Commission figures it should get all the money it can before it falls into the ocean.

European countries just tax the fuel.

It is much simpler and is an effective per-mile driving tax. Ouch!

and easier, what will San Fran do when out of State car's come in? a GPS tax is a simple minded bad idea

You might get people travelling beyond California to fill up with cheaper gas, particularly if they live close to a state border, but it wouldn't impact significantly on the revenue for California.

If I'm travelling to Belgium, I fill my tank in the UK or France because Belgian taxes are higher. Eventually I'd need to fill up again in Belgium so I can't avoid their fuel duty entirely.

We tax the fuel, also, but the revenue is not distributed evenly.

The problem is people who live outside the city, but demand easy access to it. Somewhere in the Constitution, the people are guaranteed the right to live 15 miles from their job and a 20 minute commute and have someone else pay for it.

The idea a person should pay the true costs for their lifestyle only applies to other people.

The fed taxes fuel, States tax fuel, some counties even tax fuel. You guys are way behind.

I wish we were. Current UK price for unleaded is about £1.32 a litre.

That is £5.00 for a US gallon. (approx $7.75)

This is an idea that they've been exploring nationally for quite some time...fuckin a-holes looking for ways to stay deep in the pockets of Americans now that some vehicles are getting better gas mileage. No matter what, we get raped....

Yep, all the nut jobs in SF have to do is take off the tin foil hats and wrap them around the GPS antenna and you're off the grid...so to speak.
