Pentagon threatens action against Navy SEAL author

According to the Associated Press, the Department of Defense has threatened to take legal action against a former U.S. Navy SEAL, claiming his book (which chronicles the mission to kill Bin Laden) violates the terms of his service.

A letter was dispatched to both Penguin Publishing and the books pseudonymous author “Mark Owen” Thursday. In it, the Pentagon informs the author that “In the judgment of the Department of Defense, you are in material breach and violation of the non-disclosure agreements you signed.” They went on to say that “Further public dissemination of your book will aggravate your breach and violation of your agreements.”

The letter closes with an ominous threat of legal action.

"The Department of Defense is considering pursuing against you, and all those acting in concert with you, all remedies legally available to us in light of this situation."

In layman’s terms: “shut up or we’re coming after you.”

We’ll see if the Pentagon is truly willing to take this matter into the legal arena, but if you’re Barack Obama, a public court battle with one of the Navy SEALs who brought down Bin Laden is probably not something you want to see in an election year.
