Ever have a phrase that you heard once, in a context too unimportant to be remembered, suddenly roost in your brain like a homing pigeon? "Penny dreadful." Isn't that an antique term for pulp-fiction?

What a fabulous name for a heroine. She's probably a bookish Victorian-era spinster, age 26 and considered on-the-shelf. She owns a dog named Hubris and secretly watches the vicar working his garden with his shirt buttons undone.

Or not. Whatever.

That line would be at home in the Parrot Sketch.

"It's pining for the fjords."

"No, it isn't! It's dead."

"It's not dead; it's feeling a bit pulpy."

How about "Brevity DeWitt?" Penny Dreadful's wealthy Society cousin.

Penny Dreadfuls were 1890s adventure fiction sold at railway bookstalls. They had luridly coloured paper covers usually showing some action from the plot. They were the comics of their day.

Penny Dreadful IS the name of a heroine. She is a detective who also appears in Penny Post and others. I think they were written by Susan Moody. I'll check.

Og

PS. Edited. Yes, Susan Moody did write 'Penny Dreadful'

Well, there is already a "Dirk Gently, Wholistic Private Investigator" given to us by the late, great Douglas Adams.

I want to meet a bloke who hands me his card that reads "Private Dick".
