pen or pencil on paper?

How do you write? Pen or pencil on paper? I use to do that, but I ended up wasting too many trees writing poetry or prose on scratch paper or notebooks. Now I write on spread sheets for my poetry. Spread sheets? Yes, I make two columns side by side write something on one column then copy paste the polished version on the remaining column.

I lose the beauty in poetry when I do that don't I? Yes you agree? Nah... I'm very disorganised. I love messy and the spread sheets only clear up my scatter brain so I don't lose the good stuff. Oh, I still carry a notepad with me wherever I go beacuse story ideas and great poetry lines don't wait for my computer to start up.

I'm the sort that likes gadgets and software. I like free downloads for writing or on graphic programs. Every month or so I have to clean up my hard drive so I can download more :p My lastest download discovery: RoughDraft is a cool program that is free and you get the whole version, not trial service... totally free. RoughDraft is word processor that allows you to flip from one word file to another quickly. No waiting for your files to load up and be virus scanned each time you want to just look at something. Cool... check it out.

Again, how do you write? Pen or pencil on paper?

I write on whatever is closest. Funny thing, a lot of my ideas come when I am in my car. At least three of the poems I have posted now had to wait till I got home and at the computer. This is a disadvantage because, like you say, sometimes ideas dont wanna wait. I have things from as early as second grade still packed away, and from high school I am afraid to look at. All those are on paper because I think computers took up a city block when I was a kid ;)

I usually take a small notebook with me when I am in my garden, so I dont have to get up and run in the house if something strikes me, but it eventually ends up on disk or diskette :) And I usually only use something basic like works or wordpad. I have been experimenting with my paint and images programs, but nothing that looks good yet, that I am willing to post. I do have one about ink blots thats kinda cool and I couldnt have done that on paper.
Some things, however, I carry around inside my head for a while before I even attempt to write them down because I'm just not ready to "see" them. I like the formulation stage, especially with stories.
Hope this helps some. See ya later, Maria

PS, I always use a pen, either black or purple ink

and also, isnt the beauty of poetry the finished product? or is it the process, or could it be the interpretion? seems all very subjective to me..if you think any part is beautiful, then you have nothing to ever explain :)

Straight into word. Occasionally pen and paper when my computer is not on. Like Maria, many of my ideas come in the car. I was looking at those tapeless digital recorders last time I was in the store. Okay, tomorrow I am going to buy one. With pen and paper or in the car, its usually just words, phrases or ideas. Almost never full stories or poems.

Fool

hey Fool, I tried tape recorders, but the sound of my voice drives me nuts...maybe thats my problem..( make note:::stop talking to self)

usually pencil or a fountain pen

I sit at a computer all day. When I want to create, I have to get away from the computer. All my poetry starts on paper. There's something about the scratch on the paper that kicks starts my right brain.

Sometimes it takes days/weeks/months/years for my poetry to make it to disk or hard drive.

But if I'm gonna be more organized..... <sigh>

Reluctantly typing in a few poems,

Cordelia

Maria—I'm wanting to know about that purple ink you use.

And sometimes it is the process. A fresh sheet of clean paper makes for fun to write snippets all over it. I like the 'back to schools specials' when they roll around. All that new paper, pencils and pens... makes me want to go out for some lattés ;)

I dont mean for this to sound, well, kinky, but I like the way certain types of pens feel in my hand, the Pentel RSVP ( thats my purple pen) ;) is nice and some of the electro glide roller balls are great, especially with fast dry ink. My handwriting has deteriorated over the years, have no idea why. And school shopping definitely loses its fun after two kids, really, the sound of the screams in the notebook aisles at Wal-mart, well, its terrifying, neo, you can take my 14 year old next year, she only spent 75$ on *supplies* this semester, I got off really easy, I think :D

Yes, pen or pencil on paper, but rarely. Most of my poetry goes into my email and gets saved in the drafts folder. Probably not the best way, but I'm creature of habit.

Straight into the computer or it doesn't happen. I have pretty scratchy handwriting and I'm a southpaw, so I tend to drag my hand across whatever I just wrote--not a pretty sight for the paper or my hand, I can tell you. Also I often edit as I write, so I love the convenience of "delete" and such.

purple is peaceful, it calms me..when presented as fermented
fruit, it often numbs me

red is my temper, or red door perfume,
some flowers in my garden, or my daughter's viola, out of tune

silver is money, or kisses from my honey
a full moon in August or a sound proof, empty room

green is life, and by-product of death and decay,
a calm Atlantic ocean on a bright sunny day, the color of my lovers eyes, pears picked in May

theres my rainbow for ya neo ;)

till later, maria

I used to write on paper. Pencil only if I had no other choice. Like Cordelia, I favour a fountain pen. There's something about the feel and the scent of drying ink...the way the nib need only lightly kiss the page.

Unlike Maria, my ink is black. I will confess that in grade six, I favoured a peacock blue because it was considered too frivolous by Mrs. West for whom writing was a serious endeavour. But that was then and this is now. Colour me india ink.

I liked pen over pencil because it was indelible and focussed the mind. It's ironic that now my computer is small enough to carry, 99% of what I write goes straight onto the hard drive and you don't get more ephemeral than electrons. However I type slowly which also focusses the mind so the trade-off works.

pen and paper. blue and black pens, it all depends on my mood. i prefer blue. black just looks better sometimes. i have a hard time typing a first draft of anything. there's just something about pushing buttons that just sucks all of the energy out of my brain.

i used wire bound notebooks mostly ( blue or black cover), but any paper will do.

all i need is silence or maybe some instrumental music turned down low in the background, my pen in my left hand and some paper and i'm all set to write five or six poems to get one good one down on paper and i'm happy.

i still need to learn how to edit myself, though. hopefully i'll learn that skill soon.

I almost always use whatever is closest. Notebooks, cardboard, napkins, etc. are all equally useful.

I write all day on a computer, so it's nice to turn to my journal (a compostion book) to write in pen, usually black. I like the finest tip possible.
But then, like WickedEve, most of my stories and poetry end up in email drafts. I find putting them into email docs makes a good editing experience.

Hmmm....

Maybe I need a different medium. India black ink. Japanese calligraphy brush. Naked female woman. :D

I don't think my 16 year old bought school supplies...:p

Usually whatever's closest, but more often than not, my puter. However I do like fine tipped black gel pen, or a nice crisply sharpened, albeit used pencil.

I find I use the puter, more than anything, though.

I either write it all in my computer, using Word, or, in more complex pieces, write a first draft in the computer, print it, and then use a black pen to write over it, rewrite, edit, add notes, re-edit, and keep doing it until no one else would be able to say what the hell I'm doing. That's about the time I type a second draft at the computer. Final edit is always done there.

Oh I forgot. I sometimes edit in red pen. It reminds me of when I was a teacher, only I always write nice comments to myself in the margins. Then I put an A at the top. :D

I like to put one at the bottom.

Hmm... Nevermind...

I'm sorry Lauren, but darkmaas felt that I had neither graded the um goods highly enough, nor had I presented an erm graphically balanced aesthetic. Also, I think he just likes to look at that AV. Thus, I give you the new and improved AV.

That's it though! I'm starting to feel I've totally objectified you, lol. I might as well have written "Grade A Prime." So for the record, I'd like to state that hot as the AV is, *I* love you for your mind. Plus, you have a gun.
