Pelosi reaches deal with White House for free coronavirus testing, paid sick leave, and more

House Nancy Pelosi and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin are reportedly on the verge of an agreement on a coronavirus response package that would protect working families from the worst of the pandemic’s economic impact. The deal, as reported, includes versions of many of the provisions of the House Democrats' bill unveiled earlier.

“We’ve resolved most of our differences, and those we haven’t we’ll continue to have a conversation—because there will obviously be other bills,” Pelosi told reporters.

The deal, as reported, includes 14 days of paid sick leave for workers who are sick or quarantined, with tax credits to smaller businesses to cover those costs. It expands unemployment benefits, lifts work requirements for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, adds funding for food aid programs, and adds funding for Medicaid. The key piece still unresolved Thursday night was family and medical leave. The Democrats’ plan had included up to three months of such leave not just for when workers themselves are sick but also for caring for family members, including kids who are home due to school closures. Coronavirus testing would be free for everyone, including uninsured people.

Presumably the devil is in the details, but it sure sounds like Democrats got a lot of what they wanted to do to help people struggling to get by.

While the House will vote Friday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has adjourned the Senate for the weekend and gone home to Kentucky, so the Senate won’t take up the bill until at least Monday. And, speaking of McConnell, here’s an important reminder:

The difference between the two parties:

- Seven months before Trump is up for reelection, Dems offer to pass an economic recovery package.

- One month after Obama is elected during a global financial crisis, the Republicans refuse to lift a finger to help the country

So Pelosi is sticking her hand in my pocket, not saving my ass.

And here's an important reminder: Totalitarianism and socialism aren't "helping the country", despite the lefts cries to the contrary.

You missed the part where it says SHE MADE A DEAL WITH THE WHITE HOUSE. You're not aware that it takes at least two parties to make a deal.

she'd make a better president than any of them

If they keep pretending that avoiding shaking hands with people testing positive is no big deal, she--and the rest of us--might be able to see if that's so or not.

Pelosi deals are only the way SHE wants them, the other side does not count. History!

Oh, bullshit. Despite total fail, what you describe belongs to Trump and the Republicans, not Pelosi and the Democrats. The House Democrats have been the ones to be trying to put legislation through, including this virus response bill, and the Republicans have been the ones with their fingers up their asses. The House is working on this bill now, in the middle of Friday night. Where is the Senate? Moscow Mitch sent them home for the weekend.

You're full of crap. I don't know how you Trumpettes can be so blatantly stupid about these issues.

So it's not just Pelosi saving my ass? Is that what you're saying, Mr. Brownshirt?

I had not previously associated Pelosi with anal. Peggy Pelosi gonna fuck all the bitches.

It's something she created and embarrassed the clowns with it until they had no choice but to make the deal. Mr. Brownshirt

Oh, really? Nancy Pelosi would be eighty-eight in 2028. Her eightieth birthday is in less than two weeks.

McConnell didn't just send the Senate home early for the weekend. He has usurped/stifled their legislative responsibilities since 2012.

Pelosi's deal is important in itself, but even more important is that she has shown that American Institutions (Congress - the Swamp?) must work during a time of crisis and should not subsumed by the White House through executive fiat.

I wonder if Mnuchin will be in strife with Trump for letting her take the credit.

You don't know how the US Government actually works; do you?

Not at all I was just replying to the OP's assertion that Pelosi is saving me, by taking my money and giving it to some biotech/HC corporations that will almost certainly do nothing for me.

Also by that logic you're supporting Trump, who is also "saving your ass" just as much as Pelosi is. :D by taking your money and giving it to big business, minting new 1%'ers for something you're likely not going to benefit from.
