I've always been told that it when it comes to common sense, very intelligent people can be the stupidest of all.
This came true when I went to a lecture by quite a well-known professor, who went into a ten-minute digression on why we call a table a table.
After invoking the works of philosophers, linguists, critics, sociologists, psychologists and linguists, he eventually came up with his own explanation:
We call a table a table, because it exhibits qualities of tableness.
His words will stay with me til the day I die.
Has anyone else ever heard someone really intelligent coming out with something like that?
