I just happened to run across this article when I was looking for a place to buy a piggy bank for my grandson.

British banks are banning piggy banks because they may offend some Muslims.

Halifax and NatWest banks have led the move to scrap the time-honoured symbol of saving from being given to children or used in their advertising, the Daily Express/Daily Star group reports here.

Muslims do not eat pork, as Islamic culture deems the pig to be an impure animal.

Salim Mulla, secretary of the Lancashire Council of Mosques, backed the bank move.

"This is a sensitive issue and I think the banks are simply being courteous to their customers," he said.

However, the move brought accusations of political correctness gone mad from critics.

"The next thing we will be banning Christmas trees and cribs and the logical result of that process is a bland uniformity," the Dean of Blackburn, Reverend Christopher Armstrong, said.

"We should learn to celebrate our difference, not be fearful of them."

Khalid Mahmoud, the Labour MP for a Birmingham seat and one of four Muslim MPs in Britain, also criticised the piggy-bank ban.

"I doubt many Muslims would be seriously offended by piggy banks."

Thats our multi cultural Britain for you! Bend over backwards to appease the immigrant population and their religions but force the original populace to change to suit as well.

I do feel for the Jewish community, because theyve been here for so long theyre considered little and thought of as absorbed, not considered in things such as sensitivity but there again they dont kick up a fuss about the least thing.

Why do we pamper to ethnic religions when we dont respect this country's own at all forcing people to work on Sundays and minimalising Christian teachings so as not to offend the minorities.

I dont like the French but admire the fact that if you want to live there you embrace their culture, learn their language and abide by their laws.

It is very hard not to sound like a racist when talking about such things, I feel that as usual it is only a small minority that cause problems and that is inevitable and across the board, not limited to one race/colour/religion. Do-gooders are the main problem!


Well thats my early morning rant over, I dont want to offend any one, its just my thick working class opinion.

The phrase "When it Rome..." springs to mind. At the end of the day, when implementing policies like that, all it does is turn people against immigrants. When I was a student in Birmingham, Christmas was renamed "Winterval" so it wouldn't offend the Muslims. It didn't make any difference that most of the Muslim population carried on calling it Christmas anyway.

I hate political correctness - apart from anything else it's making our language so fucking bland. The blanket "people of ethnic origin" is preferred to Pakistanis, Somalis, Iranians and the like; and we can't even call someone deaf anymore - instead they're "hard of hearing".

So are we doing away with piggy banks altogether now, or just renaming them "Ceramic investment objects"?

I'm sorry, but the PC brigade deserve to be horsewhipped. Whatever you call something, it's still going to be that thing and, over time, the new word is also going to develop a stigma. We need to change the way people look at things rather than the words they use for them.

Expecting people to spend their lives walking on eggshells is eventually going to cause a lot of resentment.

Although there are clay statues from Bali dating back 1500 years that people believe are 'piggy banks'.

No, I don't understant your metaphor. The post was about the extreme act of Political C orectness of a bank eliminating piggy banks because Muslims consider a pig to be "unclean". After all, a bank is just a chunk of plastic or ceramic, not something you would eat. Than I added, sarcastically, that they had never done the same thing regarding Jews, although Jews have been in the Britain for over a thousand years, and pigs are equally unclean to them. I don't see what this has to do with Caucasian people being afraid of you.

You're right, but it was awfully hypocritical of the banks to claim they had a motive higher than just covering their asses. I suppose there are some Muslims working in the banks but that would make no difference to the terrorists.
