(Check out the original 1960s TV series on DVD, where Macnee played opposite Honor Blackmon or Diana Rigg!)
Actor Patrick Macnee, star of The Avengers TV series, has died in California at the age of 93.

The Briton, best known for playing John Steed in the 1960s television series, died at home with his family at his bedside.

He also played roles in theatre, appearing on Broadway.

A statement on the actor's website read: "Patrick Macnee was a popular figure in the television industry.

"He was at home wherever in the world he found himself. He had a knack for making friends, and keeping them.

"Wherever he went, he left behind a trove of memories and good wishes.”

After playing a number of minor roles, including one in Laurence Olivier's Hamlet, Macnee shot to fame in the original Avengers series between 1961 and 1969.

He returned when the series was reprised in the 1970s, appearing alongside Joanna Lumley's Purdey and Gareth Hunt's Mike Gambit.

He also appeared in the 1985 James Bond film A View to Kill, playing an ally of Roger Moore's Bond character.

The actor, whose full name was Daniel Patrick Macnee, was born in London on February 6 1922.

His mother, a niece of the 13th Earl of Huntingdon and a socialite, went into labour at a party. Macnee never discovered whether she reached hospital or if he was born in a carriage half-way down Bayswater Road.

He always seemed so urbane.
And one must not forget the last of the 'old' Avengers; Linda Thorson
Ah well, I guess he's investigating mysteries for God, now.
Rest in Peace, Steed; you really kept us smiling.

Damn fine gent in a bowler hat and a steel tipped umbrella.

They don't make them like that any more, more's the pity.

As a young fellow, I think The Avengers may have been my favourite TV programme - not that there was a lot to choose from back then.

I loved the way in which Patrick Macnee played Steed 'just to the edge' - but never took himself or the character too seriously.

Everything the British aristocrat ought to be, and generally isn't.

Let it forever be known that the Stewart Dynasty, has granted him the Order of The Oak in his death, as our stupid cousins failed to knight him in his life.

Valet, Sir John Peel.

I loved The Avengers, it was watched religiously in my household when I was growing up. I remember my dad being in love with Diana Rigg.

Diana Rigg raised the stock price of Kleenex by 25% at a minimum. :D

Sad to see old Steed saying goodbye. I loved the show.

Exactly. And Diana Rigg did, too. That was what made the show a pleasure to watch.

Steed was my first crush. Or maybe it was Spock. I can't recall. And we lost both Patrick and Leonard this year. I'm beginning to feel my age...
