I've decided to open my own Patreon page, dedicated to creative writing. If anyone would like to donate a $1, or hopefully more, just head over to: http://www.patreon.com/RhoEpsilonDelta

I'll still upload my stories here, but any supporters will be able to get early access to any new pieces, as well as the opportunity to vote on which story I work on next and even submit their own story requests.

So you think a bunch of aspiring writes would contribute to your pocket?

I haven't heard anyone here say or even imply that they are well off enough to contribute to your writing. I really think they would prefer to contribute to their own writing. Try the General Board.

Um....I don't think one has to be well off to drop a buck on someone.

This really proves a point on a discussion my wife and I were having this morning.

The average person does not want the person next to them to succeed in anyway because it makes them have to wonder why they don't succeed.

That emotion causes scorn and derision when someone says "Hey, know what I want to do" and followed by remarks like "You want me to give you a whole dollar?"

Guess you don't sell as well as you claim over at amazon if a dollar is a stretch.;)

So, um....just admit you're cheap.

I love capitalism. I love my dollars.
In order for capitalism to work, I must part with my dollars.
Capitalism is doomed!

I see things like this as Lex Talionis.

Now that term because of the bible and Levay has developed into a negative term "an eye for an eye" always meaning revenge.

But the term pretty much means You get what you give or karma.

So when I see something like this I will usually contribute. $1 is not much to ask as opposed to some of the insanity I have seen in the kickstarter program.

Not cheap, just fruggle and can ill afford dropping a dime for someone else's use. Except for necessities.

MOney doesn't mean anything to me.

Now I am not saying I have a lot(let's face it only one person here is richer than all of us:rolleyes:)

But I don't worry about it. I hustle and have found several ways to make extra when I need it.

I'm one of those people who give all the pan handlers money on the corner and buy them coffee or an occasional sandwich and I'll give to things like this.

The fact I came from nothing is probably why I'm not obsessed with money in the first place.

My attitude is I live in a nice home, drive a decent car, have a job to go to and food in my house. What else do I really need

Well, um, besides a lot of comic books and random B-movie posters and some action figures.....

You have a heart - nothing wrong with that.

All I'm asking at the moment is for people to spread the word on my new venture. If they'd like to help out themselves then all the better, if not then maybe I've opened up an opportunity for them to follow in my footsteps.

If you'd rather I not let you know if this is something you could also do for yourselves then I'll keep quiet about it in future. If people do want to hear about whether it's worth pursuing they can always PM me for an update later on.

At the moment I'm not even asking for their money. The way the system works is that people pledge to pay once I actually produce something. If they choose not to pay after that then there's no problem for them, they can simply remove their pledge without accessing my product on the site and not pay a penny.

Whoa....

shhhhh!

Nope. I'm telling EVERYONE.

I agree with the dollar here or there. I always drop the change in the dying kids can or the holiday food drive stuff if I have it. It's not like $.75-$1 is going to break the bank.

I also tip full service gas attendents because I've had that job.

...but an aspiring writer? Fuck 'em, I've got enough to read.

Not sure I follow either the logic or ethics of this. Sure $1 is not much but why should anyone pay if you're going to publish the story anyway on Lit?

Lit is good at letting authors promote their published work but isn't this taking advantage?

People don't have to pay anything, there's even an option to support the project for free if they want to, but people willing to chip in a little more will get to have their say in which stories I focus my attention on next, and the real big spenders can even have their own private stories written bespokely. In a way it'll help me engage with my readers more, since they can tell me which stories they like and which I should leave fall by the wayside.

As I said though, at the moment it's just a matter of spreading the word as far and wide as I can, just to let people know the option is there if they want to help out.

I've seen a few 'pay-to-play" short story sites, how is this one working out so far/ how long have been there, etc?

BTW: Lit does offer a non-erotic section.

It's only been running for about 18 hours so far and I only have the one backer, which is why I'm trying this 'aggressive advertising'. Right now I need to spread the word that the service is open so people can come and have a look for themselves to see if its worth investing in.

I've set the initial milestone at $200, if I can get enough backers to pledge that amount then I can really start to rely on Patreon as a source of income and concentrate on making good quality stories without having to starve myself in the process. I've also set a $1000 milestone to get artwork made for the stories too, since I know several artists who'd appreciate the work and this whole project's about trying to encourage creativity.

Well, that and the money, or course. :)

At this stage even if people pledge they still won't have to pay until after I start to actually produce anything, and if I don't then they won't get charged. They even have the option of backing out at any point without being charged, as long as they don't access any of the content I post up.

And you'll pay a commission to Lit for the free advertising?

Why not start a R-E-D blog and link to it in your sig line. Many authors do and, I believe, make quite good money.

BTW, I believe 'bespoke' can act as a noun or an adjective but not an adverb, or so my dictionary says.

If it actually takes off I'd have no trouble spreading the wealth, but there needs to be the wealth first which is why the advertising is needed. :)
