Which still begs the question of why post it at all? I have no idea of your motives and I wouldn't presume to ascribe them.

However, I've done similar things and I know my reasons are the wierd double speak messages I've heard all my life that tell me 1) drawing attention to one's self is immature, egotistical, childish, and generally just bad 2) who's going to blow your horn if you don't? 3) if people really care, they'll notice if you don't say anything at all 4) people aren't mind readers and don't know if you don't say 5) don't be self-centered, think of others 6) take care of number 1!

Which means I've cried alone at home through birthdays where I told everyone "don't make a fuss" and "I don't want anyone to notice" while at the same time struggling withe the normal, natural, needs-no-excuse human desire to be noticed, to be regarded as loved and special, and to get a cool party on your birthday. ANd I've also had to go hide in the bathroom during a birthday party because it was too overwhelming for me and I felt so embarrassed to have all that attention.

And not just birthdays, but most things where someone with more self-confidence and self love might have stuck up a hand and said "Hey, notice me", I've been the one who wished people could just read the signs, see the omens, or get a memo so I didn't have to act the part of the bratty 8 year old screaming "Mommy! Look at me! Look at me, Mommy! Look, look, LOOK!" The two points are hard to reconcile. The mixed messages confuse some of us more than others. It's the same sort of thing that makes some people thrive on big crowds while others of us would rather hide under the bed with just the dust bunnies, and even they can make us feel terribly self-consious, even though we really wish the dustbunnies would like us and not just stare with those grey cat-fur eyes.

Again, and this is sincere, I have no idea why you might do this. Maybe for you it's something funny, or a test, or a response to an impulse. I've no idea. You are the only one who knows and it's not, I'd guess, really any of our business unless you chose to make it so.

This is probably way out of place and might even piss some people off. I mention it because it's been the topic of some discussion with thoughtful people I know, and has even worked itself into a story I'm writing, so it's been on my mind, and I'm trying to work out the complications of it. So, if it offends, I'm sorry for causing the offense, but I won't retract or defend this.

Why I'm having to defend it I don't know. It was frivolous to begin with, (I do get embarrassed about the attention which I crave) then I was asked and provided a reply which I hoped would lead to discussion about not having birthdays, reasons thereof (which some took up) and I (mistakenly) assumed that I would provoke comment about not having been made a fuss of rather than it was my birthday yesterday. If i'd wanted the birthdaythread I would have posted yesterday. (probably in alt, form)

Now I just don't give a fuck and am going to start a "Lit was much better years ago" thread, when there was intellectual discussion about writing and everyone was so much better than the miserable set of bastards that haunt the place now. (self included)
