Yeah, it was during that club Vogue period (you know, Madonna wrote a song about the dance itself) where all the drag queens and transvestites were fashionistas. I can't decide if this film was beautiful or disturbing or some combination of both.
What's really interesting about this film is that these are not well-heeled fashionistas, but largely poorer urban men of color. It's as much, to me, about usurping, changing, and appropriating material culture as it is about usurping and changing gender.
God that sounds academic and poopy. It's good, watch it.
there's a great song called "Paris In Flames" by the band Thursday...the lead singer wrote it about his gay, black, punk friend and it alludes to the movie and the alienation his friend experienced by being such an outsider to the scene he was in, the hardcore scene.
