When I was a kid, they sent me to a psychologist. Turned out that - like it sounds yours too - there just wasn't enough challenge.
FWIW, you could add extra challenge yourself. Off the cuff, ask for a detailed report on each day's classes, ask him to explain WHY, not merely what. I'm sure those are crap, but you know the little guy - I'm sure you can find things that fit. Make him sure that you are really interested, not just in what the teacher thinks, but in what he's thinking and doing. Show him you love him and want to know and help him to look for more than just what the teach expects. I know I'm bullshitting, but I do think he could end up knowing you confidently expect more than teacher does - and loving that he can meet the challenge.

"Your puppy wants to please you!" - and that goes in spades for kids.
Get him to talk - and make it obvious that you want to hear.
