Why do many women always cross their legs when getting a picture taken, speaking with people, or generally being watched? I see this in so many pictures of clothed women including on this site.

Other women when I speak with them one on one do not cross their legs, they are either heels together or about 1 foot apart.

Curious?

It is a modest pose and has been taught for probably centuries. It's also somewhat sexy so the whole thing sorta backfires. Like Catholic school uniforms.

The heels together thing is just a variation. The idea is modesty and being ladylike. Legs apart is supposed to mean slut but I think it usually just means comfortable.

So, like after meeting a modest lady, and after drinks and a toke she has her legs up in the air and my sausage buried, both of us grunting, grinding, and moaning, the public image is not what the lady iseth?

Probably less about what she is and more about her not wanting every guy around to see up her skirt while she's eating dinner.

They are likely positioning themselves in a more flattering pose (possibly to appear thinner) in the photograph.

Why do men stand with their hand in their pants scratching their nuts? :)

I remember being told to cross my legs at the ankle when sitting as opposed to crossing at the knee. I am not sure why.

Which is very bad for blood flow. Crossing legs at ankles constricts the proper flow of blood. Do not sit, lie down or sleep like this. A major no-no in cardiac wards. Nurse sees you and will come over and advise or uncross your feet themselves.

Women are trained from birth to take up as little space as possible, they are also trained to be modest esp in skirts. If you see a woman stilling on the subway in trousers and legs apart, be very careful, she is a rebel and you have no idea what she might be up to or carrying. :D

If I remember correctly, it's supposed to be better for circulation.

That makes sense.

Compared to crossing at the knee, the ankles don't reduce that much flow! I never thought about it from a nursing cardiology aspect.

The only time I ever uncross a patient's leg is after a procedure when femoral artery access was accessed. Sometimes we tie the leg to the bed frame with a loose restraint as a reminder.
