Pardon me?

Wright says criticism is attack on black church

Here's the story ---> http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080428/ap_on_el_pr/obama_wright

It seems the egotistic bastard believes he is the voice of the Black Church in America. I think Rev Wright is wrong. The attack was definatly directed at him because of his bigotted and unpatriotic behavior, not his church.

Thanks Jenny, glad to know I'm not the only one who thinks he's a bigot
Very happy my ego isn't that big, wouldn't have the strength to carry it around :D

Jenny – I would have thought you would have understood a guy with a “fuck you” attitude. Seems to me he has more reason than you to be confrontational.

Just sayin’

Remember now, we've all been told that only white people can be racists, so it must be so. And half the time, it's white people saying so. Banderlog!

You have to put this in perspective, Jenny. Rev Wright is competing with Jesse Jackson and Louis Farrakhan for attention here. Really, when you compare what he said to Farrakhan saying that "God" was orbiting in a space ship and was going to kill all the white people, Wright doesn't seem nearly as extreme.

On a related note, I've attended services at black churches on the West & South sides, and it's nothing like what you hear from Wright. Most preachers use a bit of show biz to get the message across, but I've never encountered anyone who sounds even remotely like him. I'm sure there are plenty who do (from what Sev has said, his church was very similar), but most of us never encounter one of these. Of course Wright is going to try to excuse the things he's said and what his church has stood for....if he admits he was full of shit, the congregation of poor people might get annoyed at the 10,000 square foot house they bought him for his service (you know, the one in the white neighborhood where he can be happy  ).

I can break out the Ojibway, if you like. :D

Personally, I don't see a "fuck you" attitude.

I see someone that said something that's offensive to many and rather than owning it and saying "yes, that's what I think and I'm sticking to my guns" (which to me would be a true "fuck you" attitude), he's turned it around to make himself out to be a near-martyr for the Black Church. Thus implying that anyone who stands against him stands against the Black Church and by extension must of course be racist. Seems rather cowardly to me.

Amazingly, that's exactly what I was thinking as I listed to him this morning on the radio. Obama must be tearing out his hair right now and thinking about having Reverend Wrong offed.......Carney

oh, c'mon. You can't compare what Obama might think to what your hero Dubya might think.

I agree with you CeriseN.
As an outsider watching, I've seen the black struggle for equality over a very long time. The black community has made a lot of headway. They now have elected Federal, State and local officials. They have a voice in the community. But that voice is a voice of reason, not hatred.

There is nothing reasonable about Wright's hate filled words. Fortunately, he is the exception rather than the rule.

Black Liberation Theology might be worth a dabble to understand this preacher.

Ami...

Three friends at my church were laughing about it yesterday. :)
They are black and range in age from 70 - 30 :)
Consensus was "does Obama know that every time Wright opens his mouth it costs him as much as 10,000 black votes?"

They would love to see a black President and are sad that Colin Powell isn't running. :D

I actually had some hopes tht Powell would run some years ago. Unfortunately, Bush destroyed any chances he had of an elected political career.

Unfortunatly, in the case of Wright, there really is a rotten apple in every barrel. But when you find one you're supposed to throw it away. I suspect Obama will regret not doing so.

I think this is the crux of his stance: (quoted from the article)

"God damns some practices and there's no excuse for the things that the government, not the American people, have done," he said. "That doesn't make me not like America or unpatriotic."

The guy's on a mission to make America better, and he gets slammed for his fire and brimstone? In a culture ruled by soundbites, why am I not surprised?

And why isn't McCain's spiritual advisor getting the same kind of scrutiny? This is blatant racisim. America should be ashamed.

Granted, Rev Wright is a little over the top, but compared to Dubya, he's a saint. At least Rev. Wright is addressing the issues, instead of telling us all to 'go shopping', or yelling 'bring it on' to our enemies.

It's too bad Bush isn't black. If he was, he wouldn't be able to get away with the crap he's foisted on our country.

With all due respect for any good works he and/or the people of Trinity United Church of Christ may have done, and while acknowledging that he may have some valid, if overstated, points otherwise, suggesting that the U.S. government "invented the HIV virus as a means of genocide against minorities" is dealing with the issues? Oh, come on. Reverend Wright is clearly milking his 15 minutes of infamy.

And, to my mind, he's committed the cardinal sin for a minister--he's confused himself with the church. A church is composed of the people who attend, and contribute, and act. (Note that I say nothing about whether they believe every aspect of his message.) He's a preacher, of which there is certainly no lack.

Powell decided in 2000 that he didn't want to subject his family to the media cluster fuck. Proving what a wise and compassionate man he is, not to mention an fine father.

I agree more with this dissection of Reverend Wright. He seems to be playing the race card in order to scare people into going with his side. I personally hate this tactic with a passion, particularly since its just something that shows younger Americans that if you say anything against what an African-American says...you're wrong. In the end...we're all Americans..and racism has no place in America. But sadly...its those whom are like Reverend Wright, that make it hard to eliminate it
