Parcels, Postmen and Surprise Gifts

A friend of mine put a massive smile on my face today. A few months ago, he asked me for my address, because he said he wanted to get something sent to me. He followed that up with some "mystery emails" giving me hints and clues as to what it might be. From his clues, I sussed it would be a book. Then I realised it was going to be a Ray Garton book (any horror fans will know his name, others might, too!).

Anyway, we lost contact for a while, partly due to my not visiting the same message board as him for a time (RLK! - Richard Laymon Kills! One I used to frequent a lot), and I had forgotten all about what he had said to me ages ago.

Well, this morning, the postman knocked on my door, and he had a parcel for me. The sender's address on it was Ray Garton's!

I rushed to open it, and to my huge delight, the book is a hardback limited edition of his "Sex and Violence in Hollywood". WOW! It's numbered and everything. On the page where it is numbered, Ray has signed it. WOW! I then turned the next page, and he has written a personal inscription, to me!!! MEGA WOW!!

This is what is says:

"For Katie -

Beware the Kraft Macaroni and Cheese!

- Ray Garton"

LOL!!! :D

I knew then it had definitely been arranged by Ian - my friend here in the UK, who I met through this other message board. Cheese has always been a running joke with us. Don't ask why. LOL!

I guess you can tell I'm excited! This is the first time anyone's ever arranged something like this for me. I chatted with Ian this morning, after the book arrived, and he said he'd tried to arrange it with Ray that I get it in time for Christmas. Bless him!!!!!

I'm gonna treasure this book now, even more than my signed edition of Richard Laymon's "Cuts".

Doing a happy dance. :nana:

P.S. Ian, if you are lurking here, as I know you have in the past: A BIG FAT

Thanks, Vella!

You are so right. I've been given many books in the past, but for someone to go to the trouble of getting it sent to me, direct from the author (one of the best contemporary horror authors around, I must add!), that means so much. Ray is in the US, btw, so Ian went to a lot of trouble from here, in the UK. :D

He knew I wanted this book, what a way to get it!!! Very personal, I am gonna treasure it forever.

my 17yo is a huge ann rice fan and for her birthday last year, my brother in law managed to get her the screne play to Interview With a Vampire, signed by the cast.
not personalized like yours but still gave me ass tingles that she got it... almost like it was a gift to me too... how bad is that?!

Lime, that is cool! I bet they loved that.

Vella, that also rocks! I know exactly what you mean. :D

The fun thing about receiving something like that is the story behind it. My Mom shops a lot of estate sales and I think some of the neatest collectibles are the ones with obscure "inside joke" messages/inscriptions. I'm sure you will treasure it. That is mega-cool. Big hugs for Ian for his thoughtfulness and craftiness.

What a let down!

I thought you were at least going to say something like:

“When I opened the book, the room blackened about me and I felt myself falling.

When I woke up, I had no idea where I was.”

Then, there could have been a post scriptum saying that the message which had just been posted was found in the effects of a woman named Tatelou who had lived a very unusual life as a fin de siecle madame in New York’s Hester Street of 1897.

Thanks, Lucky.

Yep, you're right, it is that "inside joke" personal inscription that really makes it special for me. I'll give Ian some big hugs, should we ever meet up for the drink I've promised to buy him! :)

LOL! Now that would be something to tell a story about. Oh wait, that's what really happened! ;)
