"Mitochondria-- A Microorganism that lives within human cells, and had existed symbiotically with the nucleus for hundreds of millions of years. Critical for the production of energy within living things, mitochondria has its own genetic code, and the ability to evolve and multiply. After exhaustive DNA research, it appears that all mitochondria can be traced to a single source: a female human in ancient Africa, identified as 'Mitochondrion Eve'"

What if this organism had "her" own intentions, and was waiting for the day to take over the human race.

On Christmas Eve of 1997, "She" awoke. But "she" hadn't counted on another like her. Born of her own cells, the other fought her, and destroyed her. But it didn't end there.

Aya Brea, the "other", an NYPD detective, quit the force after witnessing the deaths of nearly one quarter of the city of New York. She moved out west, hoping to find herself, but instead found that a new breed of creature had been born out of the ashes of "her". Neo-Mitochondrion Creatures, NMCs...genetic mutations brought about by accelerated evolution caused by mitochondria. Aya joined the FBI, a new branch called Mitochondrion Investigation and Suppression Team, or MIST. Together with a cocky ex-Air Force PI, her reckless partner, and the team that she worked with, she stopped a second apocalyptic battle against mitochondria.

Now, she has found that she wasn't alone. There exist others like her, who have "awakened" mitochondria. And with this knowledge, comes knowledge that there will always be the danger of Mitochondrion Eve.

July 1st, 2007--Ten years after Eve's appearance.

After SWAT was sent into a building where they were told a terrorist was threatening the people inside, an explosion rocked the building. Following the explosion, monsters started to stream out of the building, engulfing much of Los Angeles.

Aya Brea, now the leader of the FBI's MIST division, called her team into her office to explain the situation.

MIST HQ

Aron raised an eyebrow, having been watching the news, and stood up immediately. He had still been filing his report from his last mission when the explosion, which rocked the neighborhood, had occurred. He finished his report while watching the news, so he had a pretty good idea what the mission was going to be. He sauntered slowly towards the boss' office, saying something about "beautiful slave driver", and knocked on her office door.

In the office stood Agent Rupert Broderick, the oldest member of the team, who had been gathering firsthand reports of what was going on, as well as Agent Pierce Carradine, their Intel officer. He assumed that they were going to be giving the briefing, and leaned against a wall beside the door. Pierce, who had taught him most of the info they had on NMCs, gave a small, grim nod. Aron shook his head slowly. If Pierce was looking grimfaced, he could only imagine the look on the face of Agent Jodie Bouquet, the Weapons Controller. She was usually cheerful and irreverant, and Pierce was usually sarcastic, but to see such a look on either of their faces meant trouble of the highest degree.

LAPD

Jack Kincaid sighed, looking at the stack of reports he had been given to look through in the aftermath of the hostage situation in the new Tower shopping mall. He had hoped for a nice relaxing vacation, only to find out that every last officer was being called into the department to deal with the problem. As he read through the reports, he shook his head. Report after report mentioned monsters, hideous deformed creatures that looked like they came from other creatures. He looked up at one of the older detectives.

"Is this for real? Monsters appearing out of nowhere, some transforming from people? As if the explosion and terrorist hostagetaking wasn't bad enough, now they expect us to deal with monsters?"

LAPD

Kyle walked in to the organized chaos of his department, with a swagger that the rest of his fellow officers knew that it would be all but impossible to hear anything but how great a night he'd had last night, and just how hot the girl he was with was. But as none of the usual banter and looks of jealous contempt found him he realized that he was out of the loop on something, quickly making his way to his desk, he made it just in time to hear his partner asking his questions about monsters.

"Jack? I thought you were on vacation? What'd they haul your ass back here for some bullshit monster fantasy for?" He said jumping into his chair and kicking his feet up.

Lapd

Jack sighed, looking up at his partner. Then he shrugged weakly, and shook his head. "I've been up since two in the morning reading report. Every officer and county deputy in the city is being called in. It's getting worse, whatever it is. I've just finished reading through these reports, you might want to read them too." He slid the stack over to Kyle, then checked his service issue, to make sure it was loaded.

Samantha and Aya

Samantha

This was it her first real mission as a part of MIST, her first chance to finally get back at the monsters that had taken her life away and to top it all off she was going to be working along side Aya Brea head of MIST. So it went without saying she was nervous as hell, the transport helicopter they were taking seemed all too quiet as she couldn't think of a single thing to say to her superior afraid she'd say something stupid but the unnerving silence was driving her crazy. So she finally decided to go with a topic that she deemed safe and would also at least be an intelligent question. "So, uh Ma'am? Miss Brea? Why are we working along side the LAPD on this particular mission?" She asked then added with a light laugh, "Aren't police officers a bit ill equipped and ill trained for this kind of thing?"

Aya

The report of the attacks in L.A. had come in late last night, deciding to go on scene herself Aya Brea left tactical command of MIST operations Rupert and took the new rookie with her to get both an idea of how she would operate in the field and for her to get some field experience. But as she continued to read the report she came to realise that a missiong of this potential scale may be a bit extreme for just a test. Then Samantha's comments pierced her haze of thought, "We're working with the LAPD for a couple of reasons, Agent Peters. One; they have greater knowledge of the city and they have first hand data of just what is going on here, and two; until MIST can mobilize the rest of the task force, back-up is never a bad idea." She said looking at Samantha with a smile, "And as for the capabilities of 'ordinary' police officers, I was a 'lowly' cop when I endured my first battle with the Mitochondria." She said with still a hint of a smile she was just teasing the girl, but was sure the poor girl thought she'd just managed to offend her boss.

Just then the chopper touched down, "Come on we need to talk to the Chief before we get out into the city." Aya said climbing out of the chopper, a red faced and very embarrassed Samantha following quickly behind.

Looking for a moment at the stack of reports Kyle almost giggled, "Hehehe, Jack when have I ever looked at a report that didn't have something to do with the location of cheap sex? Honestly we should just get in the car and see for ourselves come on...." He'd just got it out of his mouth when the Captains voice bellowed out, "Regent!! Kincaid!! Get your asses in my office now!" Kyle looked at Jack, "I don't remember doing anything that would upset him....recently...Oh shit, you don't think he found out about me and his daughter at O'brian's retirement party do you?"

Voicing his various concerns to his partner they entered the office, "Hey boss what's up? Do you need-" Suddenly the Captain cut him off, "Cut the innocent act Regent, you're not in trouble. With this recent outbreak of fucked up shit, the Feds sent us a couple of specialist who have apparently seen this before, I want you two to work with them. No refusals!!" He said as Kyle was about to voice his opinion of that idea. Then the Captain walked over to a side door, "You can come in now, these are the men I've assigned to work with you."

Just before the two Feds walked in Kyle leaned over to Jack, "Just what I need, some black suited, sunglasses wearing pair of assholes looking over my shoulder and questioning everything I do. I swear I'll...." He broke off as Aya and Samantha walked in the room, giving them both a lightning quick elevator stare he turned once again to Jack, "I don't remember doing anything to deserve this....Ever." He said mirroring his earlier statement but this time his face was decorated with a huge grin.

Jack shook his head, following Kyle into the office of the Chief. He listened to the Chief, and grinned. Working with the feds would be interesting. He considered the idea. The backup wouldn't be that bad. He turned his attention to the two women entering. One of them he recognized immediately. "You're Detective Brea, of the NYPD, right? We met after the Manhattan Blockade incident. It's Jack Kincaid, the guy who stole Vincienzo Corliogne's Jade Dragon."

She had remained quiet still feeling too embarassed for words at her earlier comment to speak to Aya the whole time they were waiting to be introduced to the officers that had be assigined to assist their operation. But upon entering her fears of being stuck with a couple of fat, lazy, donut snorting rent-a-cop's were blown away at the sight of two ruggedly handsome men one of which seemed to take one look at them then turned away. 'That's so cute! He's probably afraid that we caught him looking.' She thought to herself as she then looked at the other one and saw that he'd had a spark of recognition in his eyes not for her but for her boss. At his remark about his past she looked at Aya curiously to hear what she remembered about the incident.

Aya

Aya was having a hard time not laughing at poor Samantha taking her joke so seriously, she really wanted to assure the girl she hadn't upset or offended her in the least. But it was just too much fun to watch her squirm like that, and it had been so long since she had done anything just for fun, as a matter of fact she could barely remember the last time she'd had fun...At all. As the Chief told them to enter she shook away the empty feeling that thought had brought out in her as she professionally walked into the room noticing with a pleasing sensation that the chief had taken their request seriously and given them officers that had obviously seen action and could take care of themselves. Then Jack came forward with his statement about the Jade Dragon, looking at him closely she did recognise him she realized, "Well, well Mister Kincaid, it has been a while, it's nice to see you aspired to something more than being a thief of dangerous targets." She said with a smile, "I hope you haven't lost your quick witted edge it would be most helpful in this situation."

She then stepped forward to the center of the room, "Now gentlemen I will tell you the purpose of our joint operation. You will escort into the city and the hot zone so that we can gauge the level of outbreak so that we may get the required level of assistance from headquarters. We will avoid engagements as much as possible and you WILL follow my orders out there if you do not I can't guarentee your safety. Understood?"

"You used to be a thief?!" Kyle said under his breath glaring at his partner, "I never knew that! I thought we said we'd tell each other everything? And you hold this out on me? Well I sure as hell don't feel as bad about not telling you that I slept with your ex last weekend." Kyle said in a huff half listening to Aya as she spoke, but her last statement caught his attention.

"Guarentee safety? Since when is that a part of this job? Or yours for that matter? I'll follow your directions Ma'am sure, but once we're out there you tell me to do something that goes against my instincts? You can bet your pretty little butt I'm going to disobey, they've kept me alive this long and believe me by averages alone I should be very dead by now."

Jack shook his head. "It was a long time ago. Let's just say I took something from the wrong people. Anyways, it's good to be working with you, Ma'am." He nodded, then winced as Kyle started in on a tirade. He closed his eyes, then stomped on Kyle's foot. "Don't worry, Ma'am. We'll behave."

She had been busily studying the two men while listening to the words being exchanged, she surprised to discover that Miss Brea seemed to have some history with one of the officers. Looking back and forth between them she once again noticed the other officer whisper something to the other, 'He's so quiet, probably shy....I hope I get the chance to talk with him a bit on this mission he seems nice...' No sooner did she get the thought out did Kyle's prideful, rude and offencive statement resound the room. For a moment all she could do is gape in disbelief her little bubble of fantasy popped completely as Kyle made his nature undeniably apparent for all present.

Then she felt rise to anger at his words, "Excuse me!?" She heatedly protested stepping forward to just a few inches from Kyle's face, "I suggest you be more respectful, not only is Miss Brea the Head of our entire squad, she's had more field experience with these elements than you've had giving out speeding tickets! Not to mention your Chief promised us FULL cooperation, so you'd be giving your whole department a bad reputation if you cause trouble, and..." She was cut off by a soft hand on her shoulder, looking back at a bemused Aya she fell silent

Aya

Aya had been fully prepared for the objections of the officers, she knew the feeling well, noone liked to be told what to do when they knew how to do their job, and while the bluntness was certainly a surprise she was far from offended, and broke into an easy smile as Jack admonished his partner and gave his reassurance of their compliance. But before she could speak she found her view blocked by a very upset and irrate Samantha tearing a strip off Kyle for his 'disrespectful' words to them, and as she listened to her let him have it she did indeed let the smile that had been tugging at her lips come out. Placing her hand on Samantha's shoulder she calmed the younger girl and turned her attention on the two officers once again.

"I had no intention of telling you to ignore your instincts, I just meant that when a situation comes for a judgement call I expect you respect my experience and follow my decisions." She looked around at the three of them to see if there were any further objections. "Then if you're ready I'd like to get started right away.

The look on Kyle's face was priceless as the female Federal Agent tore into him, her aggresive verbal assault leaving the normally smooth and unfazeable ladies man gaping with shock. Never had anyone, not even Jake or the Chief, seen Kyle so at a loss for words when dealing with a woman and the Chief found himself unable to contain a shit-eating grin, 'About time someone got under that thick skin of his.' The chief thought as Aya calmed her compatriot down. Then as Aya more calmly explained her intentions and meanings Kyle seemed to recover a bit, nodding almost mechanically, "OK, yea we'll give you no problems." He still looked a bit out of it, but it was apparent his mind was beginning to work through what had just happened.

Jack nodded, then stretched slightly. He studied the woman who he'd be taking orders from. She hadn't aged at all, he thought. In fact, she looked younger than when he'd met her. He considered that for a moment, and wondered if it was because of her powers. He himself had some powers now, and he planned to make full use of them during the operation. "So, where do we go, Miss Brea?"

Samantha

She once again found herself feeling somewhat ashamed at her actions, not only had Miss Brea not allowed herself to become agitated by the officers attitude she resolved it in a way that commanded respect and would produce trust instead of 'Just do it because you were told' like she expected them to do. She'd need to apologize to the officer later, she wouldn't want her outburst to effect how they worked together. But this time before she could speak Aya responded to Jack....

Aya

Nodding at the responses from both men considered the subject closed for now, "Alright, for now we head for the location of the initial disturbance, then we go further until we have an idea just how big the problem has gotten." She said stepping forward her manner now showing just how confident she was in her command ability and everyone there could see that she was no token leader.

Jack nodded, then pulled his piece out, and checked to make sure it was loaded with an extra round chambered. "Recommended armaments? We have quite a bit here, unless you're putting up for our equippage." Satisfied with his Glock, he slid it back into its holster.
