Very strange the little I saw of it...I can't recall ever seeing the military walking in a parade rather than marching, sort of route step, like a walk in the park...must be the new Army...as I said the little I saw of it...I can't really judge..

I think for a long parade no army is marching in cadence the entire route. Even those crazy high-stepping foreign armies only do that for the reviewing stand.

But I would have thought marching past the reviewing stand they would be in a cadence march with eyes right.

There's a huge difference between a parade army and a fighting military, and the two are very different beasts.

The Chinese, for example, do totally impressive parades but the thing everyone misses is that they train for, literaly, months on end for those parades. Take this formation...it's a Beijing women's militia unit, nicknamed the "Pink Army" for obvious reasons. The two "officers" at the front are actually models, the rest of the unit is largely picked for looks and patriotism, and they did nothing but train for this parade, day in and day out, for months - I read an article on it and an interview with them and it totally oozed Chinese patriotic politics. They have no actual military training beyond the basics - this is all they train for and they do it very very well. But that's all they do.

The other formations in these parades may be real military but they also train for months beforehand. Otehr parade formations like those British Guards battalions that you see on the British formal occassions also train throighly for those parades - but they're also fighting formations.

The US Army doesn't have that luxury and we're not big on formal parades - as Saturday made obvious.

This was probably whay Chump had in mind....
