I read in the threads where someone will mention that they are paid to be editors. Besides the obvious (magazine, newspaper, etc.), what are the options and how do I go about applying?
Thanks!

If you go through any of the study programs that actually give you the credentials for doing paid editing, the avenues to paying projects will also be covered. Credentialed editors can also join associations such as the Editorial Freelancers Association, which have job boards. Publishers go there to find professional editors.

I belong to EFA. Also get some work off my professional Web site, listing my editing credits, and some business comes in through the Web site.

(The most plentiful work for editors for the last couple of years, by the way, has been medical editing.)

Ironic since over in these part of the woods medicine is currently the most difficult business to get into lately.

Medicine and editing (even medical editing) are two radically different professions, of course.

I know someone who has done medical equipment manual editing. When that project was done, he didn't go on to do more. I don't know if that was by choice, or lack of work. That type of editing/proofing seems kind of boring, but I can easily think of about a thousand worse jobs.

I'd find medical editing deadly. My wife was the administrator of a major medical journal, and I could hardly bear even to go to her office parties.

I did medical writing a while back, along with stints in public relations writing on things like herbicides for golf courses and, later, revising airport operations manuals. Each area required learning field-specific terminology and resources. Editing would mean delving even deeper into terminology, specs, and details, so I was never tempted to go in that direction. It can be intense, which is why specialized editors can often earn great pay.

Thank you to all the repliers!

Thanks to everyone who responded. I have written some manuals for people when I wrote their VB programs. I think I will pursue the study program possibility, I enjoy writing, and editing a lot.
Thanks for the info, and it will be put to good use!

Ahh. If you had only told them about your naughty hobby!

Oo-oo! And dropped a few copies here and there! :D

They seemed interested enough in the movies I've worked on, where we'd lived, and where my career was. Most of these folks lead really boxed-in lives.

The movies you worked on, the novels you are writng...

SR, please tell me you're not blowing sunshine up my ass. I have been nothing but fair, suportive to you. Now your claims become suspicious.

I'm in your corner, but I need confirmation.

You are. Your're fucking with us, I am starting to realize. Misleading us. Thanks so much.

You don't know that. I wonder how many people here have done interesting things, but wouldn't dare admit it for fear of being challenged.

Just go with it, AS. True or not, what harm? ;)

The man has helped you, supported you, and not judged you when things have gone awry. Certainly, in terms of your relationship with him here on Lit, those would be more important? :rose:

Job seekers are encouraged to inflate their achievements and experiences like balloons, then twist them into sundry animal shapes to dazzle mouth-breathing, knuckle-walking HR wonks. Lilac paper (with Concord grape print), a Sunday-go-to-meeting hat, and knee-pads complete the applicator's ensemble.

If you keep your resume honest the wonks still think you bloviated but had little to work with.

I feel no need to muck around about my past. It was an interesting life, the erotic-related highlights of which are chronicled in stories here (indexed in my profile--which, yes, only present the good parts of the experiences)--or you could just buy the published memoir Flying High. It makes no nevermind to me whether others believe I have had the life I'd had or not; I don't feel compelled to make up a duller one to suit them.

All I'm interested in on this board is that folks believe I write erotica--and prolifically and in publishable quality--and they don't have to rely on what I claim about that. The writing is easily found and assessed by the reader.

As for taking umbrage at things, AS, you do that far too quickly--which you probably should realize, considering how often you feel compelled to come back and apologize for flying off the handle. I think, as a group here, we've been quite tolerant about that habit of yours.

Just saw this, and I agree. You are all a tolerant group, sharing the love regardless. I have tried to improve my behavior lately.

No anger, just a little embarrassment as you have called me on this, and rightfully so. Making steps to change things, hoping it sticks this time. I have problems.

But I have been wrong in venting here, admittedly. Everyone here has, mainly, been so kind. Even you, SR, in your own way. And I have been trying to be respectful and supportive of you.

I'll be honest, not sure what "umbrage" means. But if I did I wouldn't need you, lol.

I didn't mean to stir up a hornets nest

This is the problem with the internet. I've been on it since '95, and I've seen a lot. You have to simply believe what is told you if you have no way to prove it or disprove it. Otherwise there are just a bunch of posts from ego's fighting over one another. I have visited "lit" for years, and written some erotic stories for friends. I'm not published, and may never be. My works avg a 4-4.25, so not a great average, but I'm happy with my works, and that is what matters. I had hoped to meet new friends and enjoy the conv's with them. But I'm beginning to realize that there is too much bickering, and I'm tired of JBJ always CAPITALIZING almost everything he posts. Laurel and Manu have the right to "YELL" at anyone. Everyone else needs to chill. I simply started this thread to get some info on how to go about getting paid as an editor. I received some helpful comments (thx to those who resp'd), but I didn't want this to turn into a trash thread. If you're gonna fight, go somewhere else and start your own dang thread. Otherwise, help me, or shut up. To my friends (and you know who you are), plz feel free to continue talking to me as you wish.
Sincerely
Keith M. (MH96)

That's sort of maybe stirring at the embers of a fire that was already put out.

Dude, what the heck are you asking for ????

I work with a very good writer's group in DFW that does amazing critiques and we have at least a dozen authors who have numerous published works. They know what the editors want, and are kind enough to share.

Sr71Plt has the chops. His writing is worth reading and learning from. It's not my favorite subject area (ok, not the top 10) but I learn from it. And I'll always listen to his comments. What he says sounds just like the best comments we get in our meetings.

Not a friend per se, or even a fan, but definitely a fan of the quality of his work. Makes me jealous. One of a few dozen writer's here that occasionally make me wonder why I even try. Different league.

My $.02
