Packs of vicious flying dolphins and rabid killer bunnies

The human mind is such a strange thing.

I have not had a real nightmare in years, at least not one that I could remember when I awoke. I rarely remember any of my dreams, good or bad, but last night… yikes.

I don’t think I slept for more than an hour, maybe two. I awoke with a start in a cold sweat more times than I can remember, heart hammering so hard I could hear it, eyes wide, searching for something but not sure what, vaguely aware of rapidly fading memories of a nightmare. But some parts of the dream do not fade with the rest, visions of being pursued and attacked by a pack of flying dolphins, of having a cute little bunny as a pet, only to have it turn on me and become a vicious, rabid killer, then it escapes and rampages around the neighborhood, killing everything in site. They just seem weird and silly now, but in the dream, they were terrifying.

Where do these ideas come from? What is it that drives the brain to come up with such bizarre and surreal images while we sleep? Do they mean something, or are they just nonsense?

Any thoughts? Strange dreams you want to share?

Oh dear. Sounds to me like you've got some deep-rooted psychological problems. Seek help. In the meantime, drink tea.

CD? Hello? I was kidding, mate. Put the bottle down. That's right. Chill.

Dreams mean nothing. Dreams are a culmination of brain activity during sleep. Those little electrical impulses just carry on through the neural network, even when we're deep under. Most dreams are disjointed nonsense, of previous thoughts, things we've seen or heard, and so on. Sometimes they connect in such a way that they play out as a real scene in our minds. We don't remember most dreams, but those we do are because we were jolted out of REM sleep during one.

Don't worry. Write a story about it. ;)

That' not really news and I'm beyond help. :D

You can keep the tea, it gives me nightmares. :p

I was captured repeatedly a few nights ago, held painfully by the wrist. When I got tired of that (every dream resolved into a trapped-by-the-wrist scene) I woke up. My wrist, of course, was trapped under the headboard, painfully. Got it out of there, and had no captive scenarios again.

Dreams do sometimes reflect reality...

Like the woman who dreamed she was eating a giant marshmallow. She woke up and her pillow was gone. :D

How terribly British.

"I say old boy, you seem to be missing your leg. And your Johnson been blown clear off."

Here, have some tea."

They mean nothing at all? Frued would disagree, not that I really agree with him.

I don't know if I buy that. If they are at least partially the work of things we were thinking while we were awake, then some of our dreams may have some bearing on real life. Things we didn't give enough thought to at the time. Hopes we don't acknoledge while awake, etc. What possible use those night time thoughts serve is another question entirely.

Dreams don't mean nothing.
Like say strange dreams the night my father died. Or the vivid, violent dreams I had for the three weeks my ex-boyfriend was cheating on me that ended when the girl died in a car accident. Or the one time I dreamed something and woke up to find out that it had really happened.

I have some horrible dreams. I have some great dreams. But they're always strange.

A lot of them seem to be themed. Responsibility dreams. Dreams where things keep slipping out of control.

It may be as Katie says, projections of your real-life concerns, at least sometimes. I had a lot of escape-and-evasion dreams when I was a child, and flying dreams, which may be related.

But some are very insightful. Your mind knows what the problem is, sometimes, even if you're in denial about it.

That actually happened. At the total cockup at Arnhem when the 1st Brtish Airborne Division jumped on the town.

The commanding general, Urqhart (played by Sean Connery in the movie A Bridge Too Far) had his orderly come up with a cuppa.

"Orderly, this operation is a mess. I don't know where 3/4's of my men are, there are Jerries all over, and there are lunatics laughing at me from the woods. Do you think a cup of tea will help?"

"It can't hurt, sir."

My fears usually show up in my dream. I'll dream about tornados alot. I also dream about needing to go the bathroom if I really need to go. It's like my body is trying to tell my mind it needs to wake up.

THis has always been my impression to. The subconcious mind chewing on things that we push from the forefront during the day. Fears we have but don't dwell upon surge up while we are sleeping.

Or as cantdog says, things we won't admit or repress. Maybe it's our minds way of dealing with it. Like a self maintenance program.

All dreams mean something, no, not what you think or have been told. It can be different every time, you need a professional Dream Transcoder and Translator to know for sure.

I will do yours free. You was hungry, even if you just ate you didn't feel full and you wanted a snack, you couldn't decide what. You thought maybe some tuna fish, a nice big tuna fish sammich with mayo would be nice (but you is dreamin so wierd shit comes in) then you thought maybe a dolphin sammich. The flying part was prolly you wanted some bird dropping seasoning.

The killer rabbit part was cause deep in your unconsciousness you know you was mean to a cute bunny one time, maybe when you was 3y.o., or could have been 2y.o., that part is fuzzy, and you feel guilty. Also you have a sexual attraction to bunnies, which is kinda sick even for a duck.

The cure is easy:

Stop watchin the Discovery Channel and eat a big snack before you go to sleep and you will have normal dreams of Playboy Bunnies with big silicone tits and lipocuctioned butts and you will awake feelin refreshed and renewed.

Dear Dr. Lisa,

Your 'Dream Transcoder and Translator' machine helped me understand my dreams and made me a better person. And it only cost me four easy monthly payments of $19.95. Now every night I dream of Playboy Bunnies with big silicone tits and lipocuctioned butts, I've never been happier.

Thank you,

CD

I dunno. I think the dream I had about my ex-boyfriend raping me and then holding a gun to my head was a pretty clear send up that I was right when I decided I was way better off with out him.
