I was bored today and went for a wonder through cyberspace today and found a few sites that delt with survival and the such like, and they were all talking about "Bug out bags" and hidden supplies and where they were going to meet if there was a problem.

So what I wanted to know was how many people here have a "Bug out bag" or even think about that sort of thing....and if someone you knew told you they had made plans for this sort of thing what would you think of them ?

Can't say I have a bug out bag....

but I have been raised to be a pat rat and to stock up on supplies. Both my parents were raised in the depression and what not. Yes, they are a lot older than me. However growing up my mom always had supplies in the basement just in case. I remember in the 70's she had stored oil in the backyard cause of the whole oil crisis back then. This fall we had it removed finally.

Peace,
Tulip

would you consider a person who did have a B.O.B a wierdo ?

I can't say for this is the first time

I am learning about it. I do know that prior to the year 2000 that I had heard stories of people buying a whole lot of things for fear that the world would be chaotic. I know I bought some extra water at Price Club and most of it was gone when I went. There is nothing wrong with being prepared. I do not think you are referring to the person carrying it about at all times like you would a condom are you? I guess my mentality being raised by my parents stocking up the food pantry and what not has worn off on me. I have to say for the winter it is good to have all the supplies I need without having to go to the store. Hmmm I do have to get to that supermarket one of these days.

What about you would you think the person is a weirdo?

Peace,
Tulip

I do find it a little strange especially when they start talking about keeping guns in these bag's which they sually say they keep in their car or by their front door.

Wow how times have changed...

never thought of locking and loading in my utility bag type of attitude.

True that would be scary escpecially if something like that is so assessible.

What about you? Do you stock up for rainy days or would you say you are the type to get it only when needed?

Peace,
Tulip

I've got food and a few other bits around the house but these guy's were talking about MRE's, millitary clothing, Leatherman tools and the best escape routes out of the areas they lived in...a little scary to a person like me who lives in the UK where your thought well prepared if you have a working flashlight in the house and some spare fuse's for the lighting circuit.

Maybe it's because the UK has been so stable for a longer time and we're just being complacent ?

Down here along the coast people will have supplies set aside in case of a hurricane. I know people out west who have earthquake supplies. But I can't see me taking a survivalist mentallity and hoarding supplies in the event of chaos. That is just to extreme for me to even think about.

I don't think having a bag to hand that you can grab if you need to leave in a hurry is no bad thing.....just some of their choices seemed a little odd, but like I said I'm from the UK and although I like to think I know a fair bit about the USA I really don't know what these people have to deal with so maybe their choices aren't all that extreme.

After all it would be good to have a spare set of clothes and a tent if you couldn't get back to your house say in case of an earthquake.

Hey I like a leatherman.....

and yes I know what it is. I should put that on my Christmas list. Anything to extreme is wrong. Even sex if you can believe that.

Peace,
Tulip

I have a cheapo version of a leatherman made by Gelert, it seems fairly sturdy so I'm hoping it'll last the coarse. :D

*Pulls whip out and crackes it smartly! *
Oh you were talking about a multi tool not a man with leather!

Seriously though, it's best to be prepared for almost anything. We have water, MRE's and other basic necessities for an emergency! Yes the whip goes with me everywhere! Never know when you may need it!:p

woohoooo

the things I love about you men. OK I am off but thank you for the conversation and such.

Peace,
Tulip

 I don't either. I guess I need to clearify my self. I was speaking as in terms of 2 birds you and me trying it out with them!

Did I speak slowly enough? It's that southern drawl and all.

I don't always have a bug-out bag handy at all times (LC does), but I have all the goodies that would go into one, and I can put it all together in a few minutes. Sometimes when I travel I put together something approaching a bug-out bag; enough survival supplies that would support me should I need to walk away from my broken motorcycle in the middle of nowhere, or if I were injured enough supplies and tools to start a fire, signal for help, filter water, etc.

Bugging out is unlikely where I live. While we have wind storms, ice storms, snow storms, floods, volcanos, forest fires, tsunamis, earthquakes, riots, we are a nuclear target and even the occasional drive-by shooting - except for a forest fire or maybe a riot or nuclear bomb, I wouldn't need to bug out. Those are not very likely to threaten me such that I would need to bug-out.

As for having firearms in a bug-out bag, yes I do usually stuff at least one of some kind of firearm into the bag. Sometimes it is just a little .22 pistol for signalling, protection and hunting, sometimes considerably more. I don't think it is paranoid to recognize that a firearm may be needed in an emergency situation.

As for "hoarding" supplies - I don't think that is a prerequisite of the "survivalist" mentality, nor is it exclusive either. Take a look at what happens whenever people think they might need something that they can't get; the store shelves are stripped bare and gas stations are emptied - in hours if not minutes.

Oh, and a note on MREs - they can go stale or spoil in a very short time if kept inside a car. You would do much better with dried or even canned food.

I took a look in my ruck sack I take to work everyday today and you know what.......it's kinda a bug out bag.

1. cheapo leatherman tool.

2. wash kit including.....toothbrush, toothpaste, razor, shower gel, comb, mini bar of soap, shaving gel, aftershave gel, lip balm, shampoo and conditioner in one (all in a 4"+4" nylon pouch)

3. pack of three condoms (well you never know).

4. box of matches with the heads dipped in wax to keep them dry, in a water tight box.

5. twenty foot of nylon chord (thin but very strong).

6. an old tobaco tin containing....pins, needles, sewing threads, a small pen knife, a "T" light candle, a button compass, some fishing line and hooks, magnifying glass, razor blade, whistle, stanley knife blade, a small pencil, key ring's, folding can opener (and some other shit that I can't get to without tipping it all out).

Ok so it's not the survivalists ultimate bug out bag but it has got me out of the odd fix before now.
