Thousands of Australians were evacuated Wednesday, with dozens being rescued, as monsoonal rains sparked flash flooding and landslides and a cyclone threatened to form in the Pacific Ocean.

Emergency authorities ordered 4,200 residents of five towns in New South Wales to abandon their homes as a huge storm lashed northeast Australia, causing rivers to break their banks.

They don't think it will be as bad as last year, however.

Floods in Australia are not too bad this year. We are experiencing the coldest summer in 60 years in the East .

The next couple of days will be interesting. Perth in southern WA is experiencing a run of about 8 - 10 days of 40 degrees plus centigrade - about 103 fahrenheit. At the same time a tropical cyclone is headed for the North west of the state. Meanwhile in the deserts of Queensland and Western NSW it's raining torrentially!
