Overweight? Blame dad
Alabama scientists have found that body fat levels in fathers are a good indicator of weight gain in their daughters.
Over a two and a half year period, the scientists monitored weight gain in 47 girls under ten. In the current issue of The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition they claim that the build-up of body fat in the girls correlated directly with their father's physique - so girls whose fathers have a high proportion of body fat tended to gain more weight .
During the study the girls each made three visits to the research centre in Birmingham, Alabama. Each time they spent twenty-four hours in a calorimetric room, where their exact energy loss was measured. Afterwards they were X-rayed to determine their percentage body fat.
Before the study, the total body fat and the percentage of body fat in both the parents was measured, for later comparison with weight gain in the girls.
After analysing the results, the scientists found that neither the weight of the mother, nor the energy spent by the girls was of any influence. Only the father's weight was correlated with the weight gain in the girls.
Although genetic factors play a strong role in the eventual weight that you will reach, the scientists are not claiming that diet and lifestyle are to be dismissed. But it does make for a good excuse, doesn't it?
