Over "moderated" forums, how do you deal with it?

There's another forum that there's this jerko "moderator" who is like a jack booted thug arbitrarily removing posts he doesn't like. Its not just me, a lot of people are pissed about it (but he particularly hates me as we are completely opposite on just about every issue it seems). He is a complete jerk. I don't think he owns the site, but I'm not sure. Nobody will explain who owns it or why this guy has all this power. I guess the only answer is to forget out that worthless hole and go elsewhere on the web.

That's what's good about this site, its got very little intervention by "moderators." The best sites are those with no "moderation" at all other than for illegal content or those kinds of things. Little jack booted petty internet tyrants are pathetic losers.

I would deal with it by not posting stuff that needs to be moderated. Suppose a post or two does get removed, who cares? It's not like some kind of historical records that your grandchildren will want to read.

I don't know. I've been a moderator on a site before. In my experience, a lot of times when people whine about heavy handed moderating but won't leave the site, it's usually warranted removal. Especially when you're dealing with consistent problem people who feel like you have it out for them just because you quash their ability to start shit.

As for "how to deal with it"? Either start a private conversation with the mod in question, asking why they did what they did. Usually, you can expect someone to respond by giving public protection and site rules reasons, in which case, shut the fuck up. Those are the rules. Do not like the rules, leave. Otherwise, they're there to promote a certain environment to make people who visit the site comfortable. If you have issue with their stance and reasons for deleting threads/posts of yours, explain where you're coming from. If it's not enough. Drop it. Be respectful. If they're a douche and either don't respond or give you a negative response that is disrespectful to you or mocking, report it to the admin. If they're the one at the top, fucking leave. It's not a rule that you have to stay and tolerate that shit. Ever. A person running a site with overbearing and user aggressive rules will probably not have many members, or the only people there will be the bootlickers anyway.

Moderation, like anything else that's subjective, has its pros and cons. I prefer a "moderately" moderated board as opposed to a free for all. I don't frequent boards where at least passable grammar and punctuation are in short supply. I don't want to work that hard in deciphering what your point is. Usually that type of board will have well-covered moderation. I figure a site dedicated basically to the exercise of writing will not attract the illiterate.

I don't run afoul of it very often, but I once suggested that a FICTIONAL character on a popular TV show deserved being raped because I found her character pretty despicable. So then I was called a vile human being that should be locked up as if I had called for the actual rape of every woman in real life and had my 1 warning escalated in one fell swoop to the 5 needed for booting. I dunno, generally my grasp on real versus imaginary is pretty solid and my compassion for the living breathing human race comports just fine with society's norms and mores. Now, my opinion of THAT overly-moderated forum was that they were the ones with knee-jerk, over the top reactions and unable to separate fiction from reality. And it's now defunct, so. Piss everybody off and nobody wants to read your fakakta site.

I am admittedly new here; but in any event, am not looking to jump into the deep end straight away and will take my newbie lumps as I get them if I lose my footing a bit. Hit me hard if you must; but I only consider myself unfamiliar, not a liability.

you're a vile human being.

and that's why you should play nice.

Nice guys finish last.

I'm a testament of that.:(

wrong thread for that , Eyer will be in shortly to start a new list.

Eyer would never put me on a list. He and I have an understanding.

I kind of feel bad for hijacking this guys thread though.

Just for the record, I'm not a fan of over moderating of boards, and of people who misuse their powers.

you're not kidding that my emojis didn't go through?

that would explain some of the replies that I got

They come across as little square boxes. At least on my screen. You should probably lose them from your repertoire.
