You know I'm probly behind the time here. But I just read about a police officer in gainsville having to shoot a man becouse the man was advancing toward him waving a sward(sp) and the mother of this guy (who had called the police becouse her son had threatend her with the same sward) is outraged that her son was killed. she said I called the cops to help him so he didnt hurt any one or himself. yet when he tried to hurt someone (the cop) he got shot. what in the hell does this woman think cops were going to do beg him to stop cutting their liver out no they protected themselves and now this woman has the nerve to blame the police. hell I'm outraged at the papers and the public taking this womans side I commend the cop for his actions concerning this situation he back away as much as he could even so far as leaving the cover of his car before he had to shhot to protect all around. I think people are going to far with this police are allways the bad guy shit and let these man and women do their jobs and protect all of us.

I'm a little surprised the cops didn't have a stun gun or tazer or whatever... but in general, I agree with you - a cop HAS to act in his own self defense or he's not doing his job of protecting the public.

I'm assuming the guy wasn't fatally wounded?

I watched a videotape yesterday of a man who tried to run over a cop after being stopped (long high speed chase), and the family tried to sue the cops.

The man was using a four ton weapon against police officers, repeatedly, endangering hundreds of lives, and directly tried to kill a police officer. All this after an hour or so of patient pursuit and repeated requests to "get out of the car".

Cops are professionals, with assholes like every other organization in the world. But on the whole they're exceptionallyw ell trained, and have my respect.

Here's a partial quote from the post RH.

"is outraged that her son was killed"

So yeah, he'd dead.

Whew-hoo, look who knows so much. This man is only MOSTLY dead, see there's a difference between mostly dead, and all dead.

Oro? Raw Humor asked if the guy was dead. I can't really see any part of my post that mentions you at all DCL.

DOH! My bad - thanks.

That actually surprises me though... Cops are well-trained in non-fatal shooting. I'm surprised that they didn't just shoot him in the shoulder or something - thus preventing him from using the sword. Does anyone have a link to an article on the story? I'd be interested in reading the it.

Actually, that's not true. The only training in shooting cops get teach them to shoot for center mass - the middle of the person. Cops are taught never to try a trick shot, or a hand shot, or even a head shot - that's a huge no-no.

It's pretty standard training nationwide. The officers are taught to "double-tap" - fire twice quickly right into the middle of the biggest part of the target. if the target doesn't fall down, they're taught to do it again, until the target falls down.

Cops that don't do that usually end up dead. :(

Just seconding what Jazz said. The only cops that I have ever heard get training for trick shots are snipers.

There is of course a big difference between a regular cop shooting a handgun and a sniper shooting a rifle from hunderds of yards away. The sniper is not normaly in any danger and the cop many times is.

The area that cops, along with most soldiers, train to shoot into is called the X-ring. At least that is what I have always heard it refered to along with center of mass.

I have sympathy for the cop right now though. I am sure he feels like shit.

Yeah it probably would have been better had the guy with the sword been shot in the leg or shoulder or something...then you wouldn't have all this other shit to deal with. But you can't say what goes through a person's mind when in a situation like that. I know I probably wouldn't have been able to think about where to shoot him. If a guy is coming at you with something and threating to kill you...well you just shoot. I feel bad for the cop. Alot of them have it hard with all the bad press about police.

You should send a letter to the editor of the paper SGTBIGDOG420 stating how you think it's wrong of the press to take that woman's side in things, and remind ppl of what those police do for everyone. People need to be reminded of the good they do. Especially after always only hearing about the bad ones out there, or hearing only the bad parts of stories.
