Outboard Motor Question

I have an old Princecraft 14 i use for fishing.

I used to run a Yamaha 2.5 2 stroke for trolling.

Last year i swapped it out for a Nissan 5 4 stroke, which is cleaner, quieter , faster and trolls well.

The boat is rated for 15, but i like being able to carry the motor.

9.9 and 15's usually weigh basically the same.

Do i get a 9.9 or 15 for going faster?

Sell the 5 and get an electric for trolling?

I would prefer to have one motor that does everything well.

Suggestions?

Why troll fish? That just seems mean.
There are plenty of people here you can troll :p

Fuck me!
I have lived and worked on boats for most of my life, but you are speaking a language unknown to me!

When we were fishing off a small dinghy, we were running a 15hp evinrude on a 14 foot aluminium boat.... runs quiet at low revs, but gives a decent boost when moving from one ground to another.

Does that help?

Yes.

The 15hp Evinrude two stroke was always the market leader in Australia.

Likewise, it's virtual twin, the Johnson 15, was always a go-to motor ( both made by OMC)

In many places, you dont have to register your boat if you have less than 10hp.

In those markets, every manufacturer makes a detuned 15 sold as a 9.9.

(Some buy a 15 then decal it as a 9.9....*coughmecough*)

Four stroke motors are greener, quieter, heavier and twice as expensive.

The Japanese make the best 4 strokes.

The Honda 9.9 is the top dog now, but johnson evinrude mercury as well as nissan yamaha suzuki and tohatsu are also players.

Electric is definitely better for trolling. They are so quiet you can almost sneak up and grab a duck as it cruises along. I'd go the fifteen for speed. We had a 9.9 on our punt and it was fine but compared to the 15 we have now it was very pedestrian.

Cheers

I'm a Yamaha fan. That and the choice between 9.9 or 15 can come down to price...how much money do you actually have Lance.

You are also in the under 10 category for registration but thats not a big deal.

For trolling a 15 4 stroke ain't bad...I doubt you know how to fish anyway.
If it ain't slow enough in certain circumstances you can just tow a 5 gallon bucket or drift sock.

4 strokes run soooo sweet. I have a 60 yammie that will troll down to 1.7 mph on my 16' and nobody can hear it running

The 9.9's weigh the same as the 15's...but at over 100lbs, it's not a one-hander from the boat to the shed.

The 5 I can carry. Someone should turbo the smaller motors.

Boat's rated for 15, so a 15 is probable....I'll just re-decal the cowling as a 9.9.

I lean towards Honda, but the Yams are also in that same upper echelon.

If you want 15hp you gotts to use 2 hands now...big baby...4 strokes is heavy.
I don't know if a 15 and 9.9 are the same weight in 4 strokes now or not.

Go for a 6 if you want to loose weight but 4 stroke is the way to go. Just don't lay it down or read the manual for which side you can lay it on.

My 60 is actually quieter that the electric when trolling...the electric has an annoying hum to it

I like grey blue better than silver

It sounds like the perfect solution would be a variable pitch prop. But I don't think they're made for small motors.

I just use a little Minn Kota for trolling but I'm also on smaller lakes. Use a 14' aluminum mostly, everything works fine. Great for smalls and pan fish, stuff like that. I got a Honda 4 stroke 2hp outboard if I have to move any real distance but it doesn't get that much of a workout really since my favorite spots are usually not too far from the landings.

Slightly off topic, I got this one little lake that I hit ever now and then that's just packed with smalls, bluegills, crappie and perch with some cats if you're in the mood for that. Problem is that it's almost no fun because it's too easy. That's why I only hit it once in a while. Like a slutty prom date, sure it's fun but sometimes you want a challenge.

I'm hoping the ice is out by the weekend so we can hit the jumbo perch...otherwise, if its not over 18" its not a target species

You can vary it with a hammer..thats about it

*chuckle*

I had an acquaintance that built his own rig. 17' hull with a small, mid-mount, 4 cyl. auto engine. What was different was that he mounted it with the transmission (4 sp). It actually worked pretty damn well but the motor and tranny took up too damn much room in the boat.

I got other spots I hit for larger bass, pike, muskie. Although I gotta admit my muskie fishing leaves a lot to be desired.
I even have a nice fly fishing spot I use once in a while but I've never quite gotten bit by the fly fishing bug. It's ok sometimes but not really my thing.

fishing is one of my reasons for living

wait...you meant fly fishing..yeah, I like it but its not a priority...we have a great river here for for rainbows /steelhead that I fly fish on once in a while

buddy got a 50" Muskie last week in detroit river

Most small lakes we go on you must use a 9.9 or smaller. I'm talkin boat motor size. Most women prefer my 10" cock otherwise.

Personally the only motorboating I'm good at you don't need a boat or a motor!

Just trying to stay on topic yet keep this erotic.:)

You sure that wasn't a dead body?

I'm a trout guy, but my lake is part of a chain of about ten lakes and I'd like to do some day trips to the other lakes.

Once you get 3-4 people in the boat plus the dog on long weekends, 5hp really doesn't cut it as a sight-seeing rig.

At 50" it could have been fvgarb....
