I'm bored. So I thought I'd discuss things to do in San Antonio. If you live here, used to live here, or visit here, fill me in on some of your favorite things to do, places to go, etc.

I tried to visit the McNay Art Museum today, since hubby has said it is a nice way to while away some time. Actually, I'm more interested in the building (an old house) than I am the actual art.

I say I tried to visit...got there only to find that it is closed on Monday. Oh, well. I used the opportunity to go a little further to Half Price Books on Broadway. I love Half Price Books.

I was thinking today about the Quadrangle on Ft. Sam. Have you ever been there to feed the animals? Nowdays you can't do that unless you have a military ID, or can wrangle a pass to get onto the base. Excuse me...post.

Went to eat on Friday night with some friends at Buck's Landing. Interesting place, good food. Might have to go back sometime.

Crossroads Mall. I noticed that they were tearing down part of the mall. I wonder what they are going to do there. I've heard that they opened a new movie theatre that shows classic movies, or somesuch. Is supposed to have a cafe inside, too. Anyone been there?

I need ideas of things to do. Places to go. Since I had my surgery and am losing weight, I actually feel like getting out and doing things for the first time in the 10 years we've lived here. Kids are in school, hubby is at work. What can I do that won't cost much?

Oh....another place I just remebered. The Guenther House. Old homestead of the Pioneer Flour mill owners. You can eat lunch in the quaint old building, or just tour (for free) the house. Very lovely. Oh...they serve really good chicken salad! lol

Rescuing this from last-page hell. Why? I don't know. Just because, I guess.

they're tearing down Crossroads mall? that's too bad, i would go there all the time because it was in walking distance from my house

the Quarry is a really nice place to go, lots of stuff to do, AMC theater, bookstore, bath and body works, gameworks, clothing shops

of course downtown is nice, esp. the riverwalk area

Thx - Nice Thread

Blue,

Thanks for the thread. I'm finally headed down to San Antonio with the wife and kid. I thought this would happen last summer, but things didn't work out then. Finally headed that way now.

I'm following your list of things to do to give some ideas to the wife while I'm at work. Our kid isn't in school yet, so she's a bit more limited.

GREAT thread!!!

Super thread Ms. BlueDaisy...;)

Don't forget to take (drive and stop to visit at each mission) the Mission Trail .... Natl' Park Service link-up of the Spanish Missions. And the wonderful Zoo and Witte Museum....and the Museum of Art in the old brewery building....and the Sunken Gardens at Brackenridge Park.....and strolling through El Mercado (Mexican Market).....and La Villita's many cool shops and galleries.......check-out mysanantonio.com for more neat places and things to do......and, of course, meet a special friend at Starbucks for coffee and good conversation..:))

Yeah, at least part of it. Didn't notice how much of it is going. The Sears is still open.

Oh yeah! The Quarry! That is a pretty neat shopping center. Hey...it is up for sale! Anyone got the bucks to plunk down to buy it? lol

Of course, the RiverWalk and downtown are interesting. In the fall I want to take a walking tour of downtown. Always wanted to, so I think I'll do it this year.

Thanks for jumping in and posting! By the way. VF...love the av!

Hehehe....I wonder who that "special friend" could be...lol

the Mission Trail is a good suggestion. Best done in cooler weather, but a nice tour anytime, really.

The Zoo is always nice to visit (again, better in cooler weather! lol...are you sensing a trend here?). Didja know it is open 365 days a year? Even on Christmas Day! Weird!

The Witte is free on Tuesday after 3:00; at least it used to be. I need to see if it still is. Oh....the Pioneer Hall there...I never have been to see that, and I want to. Thanks for mentioning the Witte!
La Villita and El Mercado are...all together now: best done in cool weather!...lol. But they are fun to visit.

Back to the Witte (for those who don't know, it is pronounced "witty")...the Science TreeHouse is really cool. I think I enjoy it as much as the kids do!

The Sunken Gardens! How could I have forgotten about that! That is way cool.

Thanks for contributing to the list!

Who has other suggestions?

Hi! When will you be here in town? I take it you are going to be here on business?

There are lots of things to do with younger kids. Check out the suggestions already posted. Let me think right quick.... Hmm...there is the Children's Museum (downtown). The Central Library (again, downtown)...is a must-see if for no other reason than to check out the color of the building! They call it "enchilada red"! lol It has a pretty neat children's area.
HemisFair Park and the Tower of the Americas is fun. There is also a park, which I think is called the Downtown All Around Playground...or something like that.

Oh...how could I forget the Institute of Texan Cultures! (It is right across the freeway from the Alamodome, former home of the Spurs). It is major neat!

Splashtown is fun. If you want to venture out of town, Schlitterbahn in New Braunfels is great!

Brackenridge Park, off of Broadway, is a very nice park. Oh...a miniature train runs through it. Unless they stopped it. I think it can also be boarded at the Zoo. We have a very nice zoo, by the way.

I hope you guys have fun here in town. Let us know what you and the family wind up doing, ok?

Edited to add: don't forget to ride the barges on the river at the RiverWalk! Kids love that!

Do you still live here?

You in the av? *whimper, whimper, drool, drool*

Let us SA Lit folks know next time you are gonna visit.

Do I like? In a word, YES!!!!

Inspiration Hills? Never heard of it, but I'll check it out. Sounds like a Lover's Lane kind of thing. lol

Thanks for contributing!

Well I been a San Antonio resident all my life, not much to do. A few clubs you can visit, the river walk, alamo, canyon lake, and thats about it. If you have ever seem Miss Congeniality they go to a place where you beat on drums and get paint spraid all over you. I'm not sure where that is but it's in SA somewhere haha.

The missons are fun as well, but there is nothing that special i found in SA.

We're moving down this weekend. I've accepted a job in San Antonio, so it will be our new permanent home.

Thanks for all the info. I'll pass it along to my wife. We'll definitely have to check out Brackenridge Park. My son loves trains, so he would get a kick out of that.

We did get to visit the riverwalk during my last trip, but we didn't get a chance to take the boat ride. Hopefully we'll get to do that next time since it will be during a less touristy time.

Thanks again for the info.

Hi Eclipse,

Welcome to Lit! Get busy posting so we can get to know you better.

I'm sorry that you don't find much to do here. But you are very young, so I can understand that. I've got 2 daughters who are 2 years younger than you (your profile says you were born in '84), and they don't think there is much to do, either.

Thanks for contributing to the thread! Let's hear more from you (not just this thread, I mean...all over the boards!)

Wow! That is neat. And so sudden! LOL! Well, sudden for us, since we hadn't heard that this was in the works. Welcome to SA! Hope you enjoy it.

You'll have to jot down all the suggestions you get from this thread so you can remember all the things to do!

You'll do fine, sweetie. Just find some threads that interest you, and post replies. Or think of something you want to talk about and start your own thread. Just have fun!

I'm in the northeast side of town.
