The women — all heterosexual — were not told they were participating in a study about penis size. They were simply asked to rate the figures according to sexual attractiveness. Their answers were collected anonymously.

Researchers found that women rated tall men with long penises as the most attractive.

The women also tended to gaze longer at the larger men. But not too long — each rating was made in about three seconds.

But how big is best? On that question, researchers were, er, stumped.

“We didn’t find an ideal (i.e. ‘most attractive’) penis size or height,” Mautz explained.

“The attractiveness scores were still increasing at the largest values for these traits.”

And According to this The US comes up a little short.

But all is not lost. This says:
Poor Americans. So many huge SUVs, so many little penises.

If heading to the Congo really isn't your speed, you might want to consider a trip to Italy. They came in 6th out of 113 nationalities with an average length of 6.2 inches. Pasta, pizza, gelato, aqueducts, wine, art, romance, history, bucolic landscapes, ancient cities, and enormous baloney ponies? Italy really is a dream land.

See the Penis Museum For a guided tour.

now that this study has been peer reviewed, it needs to be replicated.

That's the next step in the scientific process. There are a lot of variables that have to be looked at, for instance;

We can totally accept the premise that a group of Australian women preferred taller men with bigger dicks. That preference might be a partial product of Aussie culture, we don't yet know.

Or it could be a spurious correlation driven by height. There is a lot of evidence of a female sexual preference for taller men.

Johnny Depp was voted the world's sexiest man for.. um.. how many years in a row by how many different cheap tabloid polls? And he's five foot seven...

Which makes me wonder about this;

The review used "generic male figures" and thus the ladies had a very limited number of factors to input when they made their choices. I don't know what those generics looked like, but the overall effect might well have been fucking machines and dildos.

Not really the same as "preference in men," where the sex involves a few more things that their height-- and I think we see the same thing when men talk about what they like in porn versus what they liked enough to date or marry, yeah?

I think actors can get away with it, because you rarely see them in a lineup, or eye to eye.

Think about Tom Cruise. In his movies he works SO HARD to make sure he doesn't look short.

Wheras everyone knows that Martin Freeman is short, because in Sherlock he is constantly standing next to Benedict Cumberbatch.

When is the last time you saw Cruise standing next to anyone in a movie?

Depp doesn't hide his height...

Tom Cruise leaves me cold. It's that upper lip of his that really squicks me. And he climbs on the furniture. :D

Note that Depp is rich and famous, which is also a big driver for female sexual preference. Far more important than height.

Yeah, people are complex, and exceptions exist, but women placing strong weight on indicators of wealth, status, and social dominance, with men placing greater emphasis on indicators of health and fertility -- all have a lot of evidence from psych research, across a wide variety of cultures.

Not really intending to get into psych debate. I find this type of research fascinating, but like you I didn't find this one particularly compelling.

And apparently these women gave extra attention to wealth of equipment. :D

Depp became famous *because* he was so compelling to women. He became rich *as a result* of that same attraction. That horse definitely came before that cart. :D

As always, I have a problem with normative reckoning. There are enough outliers in any group to put the lie to an absolute statement.

Holy crap. So Frank Stallone is actually right about something?

Disagree on Depp. He was a pretty boy on 21 Jump Street who rose above the other generic pretty boys with acting talent and shrewd choices in roles. He didn't start winning sexiest man alive competitions until he became a major box office draw, which was much later.

There aren't many gorgeous women married to short, pretty men who work at Wal Mart.

I agree on absolutes. I am talking about statistical averages. While Depp is shorter than Charlize Theron it is still true to say that men are taller than women. Something can be true in the aggregate without being true for every member of each group.

The trick with stuff like this is controls. Women do prefer taller men. They also prefer wealth, high status, handsome faces, physical fitness, health, confidence, etc. Finding someone who is short but excels in every other indicator doesn't tell us much. That's why psych tests for stuff like this provide controls. There was a famous experiment 20 years ago where they took men of differing looks and had each of them dress as a doctor, a teacher, and a Burger King trainee. Women preferred the ugly doctor by high margins over the handsome fry cook and teacher, even for a one night stand. They did prefer the handsome doctor over the ugly doctor, which tells you the relative strength of preference. Not every single woman voted this way, but the difference was pretty clear. Men obviously have their own fixations.

Anyway, it's interesting stuff.

Or, you know, a majority of the woman maybe just preferred the big cocks. :D

I think that what women find attractive in pictures may not be what they really want, or will settle for.

Like men who say they like big tits, but may consider the A cupper at the end of the bar because she has other attributes, like being available.

It's a pet peeve of mine, really.

When people act like that's a bad thing.

Is it really stupid that women want to go after men who had the ambition, the intelligence, and (yes) the money to go through medical school?

I remember when LJ was on one of his rants here. He brought up that Nicolas Cage married an anonymous waitress and supported her, while there weren't any women anywhere who would marry or date someone who was below their means.

Who's stupider?

Men who will bring a woman into their lives even if she is just after the security that he can bring?
Or women, who want to make sure that they aren't going to be stuck with a deadbeat loser?

We always assume women are thinking about marriage and the baby carriage.

Supposing those women were really only thinking about getting off on a big cock?

I'm personally sick of hookups.

Looking for a relationship.

Doesn't need to be big, just needs to be bigger than the guy who took my virginity.

And I am done with relationships, so it's pretty relative.

If I'm evaluating robot men's dicks I'm going to judge them by size -- and maybe by prehensile capabilities.

And I'd like to have a simple, intuitive GUI for reprogramming.

You missed the point of the study, Stella.

The study was conducted using the only 105 straight women in Australia. That's out of a population of roughly 22 million, half of which are women.

So the study results REALLY mean is that there are approximately 10,999,895 horny, beer swilling, queer chicks there for us to share. (should last us each about 5 - 10 years if we split them equally!)

Flights start at around $695... ;)

By some strange coincidence that's exactly the amount I have in my fun fund! :D

You've never been to Australia, have you? :D

So they embarked on a new type of study, using computer-generated images of generic male figures with varying heights, body shapes and flaccid penis lengths.

I'm sure the actual study spells it out more clearly, but they did need to have short guys with big dicks and big guys with little dicks to properly round it out, not just dicks proportionate to body size.
