Lot of twitter and FB "outrage" on this.

As someone who only knows the name of a handful of actors, not sure if there is anything to it. Is it just another fake outrage of the week?

So far all I see is "OMG, all the nominees are white"!!!!!

I have yet to see anyone say, "this black actress/actor deserved a nod over X and it is obvious!!"

So what specific black actor/actress was left off and was there performance undeniably better than the current nominee(s)?

Or is this just some PC bullshit?

Variety:

“Creed” was written and directed by the black Ryan Coogler and starred a black man, but the only nominee was a white man. “Straight Outta Compton” had a great acting ensemble of mostly young, black unknowns, and was directed by the black F. Gary Gray. But the film’s only nomination: for its screenplay, written by two Caucasians.

Last year, the hopes for diversity were based on one film, Paramount’s “Selma,” which earned two nominations, for best pic and song (winning the latter). This year, there were more opportunities, including “Creed,” “Straight Outta Compton” and “Chi-raq,” as well as “Beasts of No Nation” (directed by Cary Fukunaga). As with last year, the Hispanic/Latino filmmakers were represented only by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and his team in the “money” categories.

Some may conclude that the nominations reflect institutional bias against minorities and women within the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, but the problem is with Hollywood’s major studios and agencies. There were 305 films eligible this year. If hiring reflected the U.S. population, Oscar voters would have weighed 150-plus films directed by women, 45 directed by blacks, 50 by Hispanics, and dozens of movies by directors who are Asian-American, LGBT individuals, people with disabilities and members of other minorities. Of course, the actual tallies were a fraction of those numbers.

Surprising omissions from the actor race this year included Idris Elba for “Beasts of No Nation,” Will Smith for “Concussion,” Michael B. Jordan from “Creed” and the many young actors in “Compton.”

Concussion was good, but I think more so on the story rather than the acting. I thought the character was actually kind of boring.

Of the movies Lance mentioned I have only seen "Straight out of". I can not say there was any single performance that I said. "wow, that was great!!". Ice's son did do a better job than expected...

As far as Director? Good movie but not what I think of as Oscar worthy. Then again, neither was Mad max IMO.

In a land were PC is born, (Hollywood) I find it more likely that this years best performances just happen to be all white rather then race playing a part.

But it all comes down to opinion I guess.

The Academy must have been reading your posts instead of Variety I guess.

I don't see enough movies to make a judgment on who was snubbed undeservedly.

And "snubbed" is a loaded term, with the implication of "you might have been deserving, but I'm going to vote for other people, just because." It's not a criticism to not be nominated for an Academy Award.

Go see a black movie that's worth a damn. Plenty of great films never get nominated.

is it really so white or just BET's version of the white Oscars?

Someone famous said that.

Fury Road was a total piece of shit movie that doesn't deserve an Oscar for anything.

All of this is based off of a racial double standard. Miss America had the same problem then the black community created "Miss Black America" and still they want nothing but Black contestants winning in the Miss America pageant or theres something racial going on. There are plenty of good quality black actors and actresses that do great work but they're overshadowed by a fringe element of loud mouth militant radical blacks that don't want equality but absolute domination. The only way to stop this is to nominate the best movies.....not the PC movies they demand. Its purely a fear tactic that they're trying to use to bully their way to the top.

At some point African Americans need to leave the progressive planation and flip them the finger. They should break away from the do as I say not as I do Hollywood crowd and start their own Oscar type award, it would be a better show too.

I'd name it the Ozzie after the great actor Ozzie Davis. Fuck Hollywood, they're a bunch of two faced bastards..

I say Hollywood gets a pass because they were gaga over that Precious girl some year back in that movie with the world's most retarded title ever.

I just think it's funny that Jada Smith thinks anyone gives a donkey's dick about her presence in the Oscars. She's lately known for her work sucking Will's dick? Other than that...

I think these award shows are so pompous anyway. They are entertainers. I love TV and movies and all. But literally, if every actor fell off the face of the earth, the world would continue relatively unscathed. Try that with other professions- doctor, educator, engineer, farmer.

They just like to sniff each other's arseholes and talk about how progressive they are. I do imagine Chris Rock will be good though. He's fucking hilarious.

I wonder how much anyone really cares?

First of all the Oscars have been sliding in audience yearly. The academies selections and winners have had less and less effect on theater gates as well. Further their selections in recent years have often left the films that have had the greatest money draws (public popularity) off the list.

As pointed out by 'Auntie', for actors to boycott the Oscar ceremonies is akin to boycotting yourself. And is likely to lead to fall out in the future. The Oscars are, and have always been, as much political as art recognition.

There's literally no one who has ever said this.

Sure, let's nominate the best movies. But who decides, and using what criteria? There's no objective "best movies."

The real issue here isn't even about this year's films, it's the general lack of good roles for the best black actors -- and by "good roles," I mean the sorts of films that tend to get nominated for Oscars (biopics, "issue" dramas, etc). It wouldn't have made any difference if Straight Outta Compton (which I haven't seen) had been directed by Orson Welles and starred the Royal Shakespeare Company, because no movie about that particular subject matter will get nominated for an Academy Award no matter how good it is.

in other words, hermione was cast as white, but is actually black or at very least brown enough not to be pink. that's life in hollywood. it is not equal. not even close. that's all i have on that. i don't really follow movies, but all of the recent ones i have seen on netflicks have been pure white casts.

No , I said better. You must have conveniently missed that part huh?

On the whole I think the black actors in Hollywood are much better than their white counterparts. You wont see them getting many coveted roles but that's by design.
