I read something about how Osama Bin Laden had a personal yahoo email account and used it to communicate with his terrorist buddies.

Was the US government aware that he was using yahoo mail and MSN instant messenger to communicate with his friends?

They could easily have tracked his IP address as well as the physical location from which he logged in from.
