Organizing extant works into series

Let's say I'm a total Literotica novice and have published a chapter one as a solo work. Have I messed up already if I intend to collect them in a series? Or can a series be created out of already published works?

Edit: I misunderstood the instructions and now realize this is the way to create series!

There are two ways. You can either start them with the same words:
  • Joanna's Hot Dog Stand 01
  • Joanna's Hot Dog Stand 02
  • ...
If you do that, the system will organize them into a series automatically. There's a delay, a newly-published story (at least for the Writing Group) took until the next day to be added to a series.

Or, you can use the "beta" (for several years now) manual method. This also has a delay.

The series algorithm runs every 24 hours from what I can see, and refreshes overnight. It's an invisible, automatic function.

The manual mechanism bounces off to a check of some kind - which might just be batch processing. It too is an overnight release.

I think the easiest way to manage a series is if you go into your Options, click My Options, opt in to Participate in early site feature versions beta-testing, and click Save Changes.

Then you'll have a Series (Beta) button in your user toolbar. From there you can create a new story series, and then you need to wait for the series to be approved by the mods. Once they do, you can go back into the Series tab, click Manage Works, and you can add existing stories into the series.

And as you keep writing new stories, you can add it to your series as soon as they're published!

One advantage of the manually managed series: you can mark it complete when it is, in fact, complete.

This lets readers who are afraid a series will never end check, see that it's done, and read it without fear.

Keep in mind the series itself has to be approved. While it's pending approval you can continue to add stories to it, but until it's approved then it won't show from the readers' perspectives. My last series took a month to approve, but I'm not sure that that's typical as I don't remember it taking that long last time I made a series.

If you intend to add a second chapter to what was originally going to be a solo work, can you simply put a note to the admin when submitting the second chapter asking them to group the two stories together?

In any method listed above, is there any danger of your existing story losing its current score or comments?

First Story Title
First Story Title Ch.02

will automatically join together, you don't need to do a thing. You don't need to have a Ch.01.

Use 02, so that, if/when, you get to Ch.10 and Ch.11, your number sequencing doesn't get cocked up.

Please don't think about writing 100 chapters, but if you must, start with Ch.001.

None at all. The chapters just get joined together, is all.

Can series cross Lit categories?
Yes. For my series "Loving Lily", Laurel put the third chapter in Lesbian, even though I'd submitted it in EC, like the two previous chapters.

And these are the stories from my "One-Off Artsy Stuff" series:

Maybe I'm not aware of any time frame limitations. I'm trying to pull stories I've recently published into a series I created. When I got into Series (beta) I'm not seeing all of the new stories listed. I have the first chapter in there, but I've since posted 2 more and can't seem to add them to the series. Yet they show listed on the Works page as being in a series. I'm confused. 😅

I just notice that I didn't list the first story as Ch.01 and subsequent chapters as Ch. 02/03 but as Pt.2/3 I'll likely need to correct that before I get the ol' smackdown for doing it incorrectly. 🫣

Hello - I’m just adding my second story to my series and saw that you can order them manually. Is there any recommendation for putting your newest at the top and first st the bottom? Or does it make sense to have ch01/02 at the top and list down from there? Thinking about reader engagement and ease of navigation.

You can sequence them however you want.

However, if they're chapter numbered, it's logical to start with Ch.01 at the top of the list.
