You’ll Need Tickets To Get Close To Trump’s July 4 Event

Elly Yu

President Donald Trump’s “Salute to America” on July 4 will
include a ticketed area for VIPs around the Lincoln Memorial,
officials announced Friday. There will also be two back-to-back
fireworks displays, launching from separate areas near the
National Mall.

The ticketed area will be “immediately around the steps of the Lincoln
Memorial, and about midway down through the Reflecting Pool,” said
Matt Miller with the U.S. Secret Service.

The ““Salute to America” event, where Trump is scheduled to speak,
will run from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Lincoln Memorial. The event
will include music and military demonstrations, including the U.S.
Navy’s Blue Angels, officials said. A spokesperson for the White House
said there will be a “portion” that is ticketed for special guests, friends,
and family, and the rest will be open to the general public.

All visitors will have to enter checkpoints to get into the National Mall.
Officials say there will be a total of six access points—two on Constitution
Avenue, three on 15th Street, and one at the Jefferson Memorial. There will
be an inner security perimeter inside the the barricades around the National
Mall, said U.S. Park Police Chief Robert MacLean.

Officials also announced there will be two fireworks displays on the
Fourth of July in the District, due to a donation of fireworks valued
at $750,000 coming from two private companies.

Trumpypants throws a wrench (spanner) into July 4th celebrations

Orange Goon #1 steals fun from the common people,
so that he can have a parade. The parks and green spaces
will be used as staging areas.

Starting Saturday — five days ahead of the holiday —
the ballfields will be off-limits. Leagues won’t have
access to the West Potomac fields again until July 7 —
three days after the fireworks.

The recently announced change is sending leagues scrambling
to reschedule games for as many as 600 softball and Ultimate
Frisbee players displaced from eight softball fields and nine
multi-use fields.

400 players who were set to play Saturday.
DC Fray, one of the biggest organizers of
intramural sports in the District, and that
means several hundred more players displaced.

"commission that would have expansive authority to close VA hospitals"

June 25, 2019

Premature—and even reckless—closure decisions will take away
health-care choices from veterans, send them to more expensive
private-sector providers who lack the expertise to treat veterans,
decimate affiliated medical schools, and have huge economic
impacts on local communities.

Decisions about closures may also be made biased by misinformation
put out by VA leadership itself.

In a recent Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee hearing, the Trump
administration’s acting administrator of the VHA, Richard Stone,
gave us a preview of the kind of “objective, data-rich, veteran-driven”
process that would result if President Trump is given the opportunity
to appoint the AIR Commission. Responding to a question about which
facilities should be improved, Stone spotlighted the San Francisco VA
Medical Center at Fort Miley, where, he said, “we have a beautiful site
on the top of a mountain but there’s not a veteran in San Francisco in
that area. They have to drive about two hours to get to us.
Are we in the right location?”

In fact, the San Francisco VA Medical Center is not located on some
remote mountaintop but right in the city. It serves thousands of veterans
who live in San Francisco or just a short distance away, and is a hub of
VHA research, teaching, and clinical care.

If facilities like this are closed, testimony by the Veterans Healthcare Policy
Institute points out, “veterans receiving care at a closed facility would not
transfer to another VA. In nearly every case, other facilities are too far away
. … Instead, veterans at the closed facility would be automatically given
vouchers for Veterans Community Care Program (VCCP) services,
without any assurance or knowledge about whether waits are shorter
or quality equal or higher than that provided in the VHA.”

Trump asks for military tanks on the Mall as part of grandiose July Fourth event

July 1, 2019

At least 300 service members were slated to participate, primarily from
military bands and drill teams, but that number could rise as additional
military aircraft and other flourishes are added to the event.

The Defense Department has not released any estimate for how
much the celebration could cost. But the use of numerous aircraft
could drive it well into the millions of dollars when counting fuel
and maintenance.

The F-35 costs about $30,000 per hour to fly, according to Pentagon
estimates. Each Blue Angel jet costs at least $10,000 per hour to
operate, and the cost of flying an Air Force One jet is more than
$140,000 per hour.

The D.C. C ouncil posted the image of a March 8, 2018 memo in
which the Pentagon cautioned against using tanks in the military
parade Trump had envisioned, saying, “consideration must be
given to minimize damage to local infrastructure.”

Apparently Trump wants military tanks on the Mall for July 4th. I guess he forgot when the military told him what the damage would be when he wanted them parading down Pennsylvania Avenue. Same same with the Mall and getting there and away.
