PC Magazine have some good reviews:

It does depend on what your price range is, and what you want to use it for. If you just want to take snaps ("holiday snaps?" "Could be, could be... still, ooooh eh? ooooh eh?") which is what my lover uses hers for, then I can recommend the Sony and Canon ranges.

My lover recently bought a digital camera, but she won't let me near it. *chuckle*

It's really hard to give recommendations without knowing how serious you are about photography, what it will be used for, and how much you are looking to spend.

However... this is a really good site...

Sorry for the double post... but I also have a few stores you might check out... there are a lot of camera shops on the internet that will really try to screw you. For example... Broadway Photo...

Here are two good ones...

B&H Photo

NewEgg

These are two that come to mind right away... I have ordered from both. They are both very easy to deal with.

Just a few other suggestions. I wouldn't buy anything with less than 3MP... but most cameras are well above that now. Look for optical zoom... ignore digital zoom which is completely worthless.

Good luck!

I like adorama photo in NYC.

Olympus is also good for the totally manual snapshot experience, I used to use one at work and it was great.

I've switched to the Nikon D70, because photos are part of my livelihood, few people need that much camera, but if you do, I like it. Saw some wedding photographers at a wedding I was at also using it.

Are you printing these?

If not, you don't need the high resolutions and bazillions of megapixels, 3.5 is FINE for web use and frankly, M's old canon 3.5 megapixel has a better macro closeup function than my D70.

wanna come shopping with me? :)

Oh my God, yes. Preferably if I can um, show you allll the things your new camera can capture (ahem, hot smoking babes, ahem)

I have only had one experience with Adorama. I was buying a digital for a gift and when I ordered it online for super cheap, they called my house and tried to hard sell me on a lot of junk I didn't need to go with it. So finally I told them I just wanted the camera, nothing else. After that they canceled my order and told me the camera was out of stuck... which I find hard to believe given how I was treated.

To be fair though... most people I have spoken with have had positive experiences there.

weird...
I bought lights, I guess that's harder to upsell.

Thanks for tip.

One tip...buy an extra battery, make sure it is rechargeable, and also an extra disc for pics as though they usually tell you the one that comes with the camera will get plenty of pics in one go, it is a subjective opinion. If I had not decided to go against the advice and buy extra battery and card there are many times I would have been screwed with the standard pack, especially for special play sessions or weekends sightseeing etc. where you don't normally either have a computer with you or time to download. I have Canon Powershot S45 and my daughter has just bought the latest model Powershot and both take fantastic pics as well as the 3 minute video. Happy shopping.

I agree with the advice regarding # of megapixels. 3 + is fine for up to 5 x7's

I have a Canon S50 (replaced the S45) which has 5 megapixels. At it's highest settings it is near film quality at 11 x17 (can't tell with the naked eye, but you can in Photoshop)

I have had it for about 1.5 years now, and it is still working great. (my last camera was a kodak and it fell apart at 13 months just after the warrrantee ran out) But I would definitely research first. You don't need the high resolution pics unless you are doing large prints, or getting into a lot of photo editing stuff with Photoshop.
