Beating hearts? Fiery skaters representing "passion"? Tree men? Is it me or are these opening Olympic ceremonies kinda wacky? I don't mean these in specific (well, yes, there are plastic cows going by), but in general. Every winter Olympics they come up with this bizarre show filled with bizarre "symbols."

Personally, I think they should have done it like a Fellini movie. Ciao!

I think they should hold the winter Olympics in the summer time, so it wouldn't depress me to watch. I fringin hate the cold <<shiver>>

Plastic cows?

I know I've been drinking, but -

My five year old screamed and ran out of the room when Bolle took off the tin soldier outfit and revealed his nude glittery body suit and mohawk.

It seemed like my boyfriend and I were saying either "Oh, that's nice." or "What the fuck?" throughout the whole thing.

Botticelli's Birth of Venus???

Did love the sun and moon though.

Exactly.
But that's the fun of Olympic opening ceremonies. They're all wierd, winter or summer. I like to watch to see how much more bizarre they can get. And this one was a doozey, although I was very impressed with the 'dove' (which looked more like an eagle to me), made by the scrambling, white-suited spidermen on the posh climbing frame.

I was hoping they'd have some guy dressed up as the Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him, of course!).

Wicked!

I did love seeing Sophia Loren--and all those other ladies looking so classy carrying the Olympic flag.

The little girl singing the Italian national anthem was also cute. Very pretty Anthem. I don't think you can march to it but you can certainly drink cappuccino to it.

And I suspect that the coreographer there, the guy in the heart-suit with the mohawk, is enarmored of Bob Fosse. The outfits and moves of a lot of the dancers and acrobats were very All That Jazz.

Cappuccino is okay, but I'm not a big coffee drinker most of the time. Then again, I haven't marched, either, since I left JROTC behind in high school.

I thought that's what they were attempting, though failing; they should have gone with Bertolucci  .

However, it was good to see la signora elegante, Sophia Loren (though that made me miss Mastroianni). I think I'll watch La Dolce Vita tonight.

Perdita

I really didn't like the ceremony this time. I only liked the people perfomring the giant ski-jumper. He even did a Telemark :)

Other than that I found the performances silly or boring. The kindling of the flame was kinda cheesy and except Alberto Tomba I didn't even know any of the last carriers.

Oh, and the outfits were for the most part horrible.

I have to admit though there were one or two really hot female athletes, expecially the flag-carriers. :)

Snoopy

Oh, to be fair, I liked the Pavarotti-part a lot.

Snoopy

P.S.: First two Gold-medals went to Germany. *grin*

All Hail the Torch!

The opening ceremonies are always weird and, like this one, pretty silly. But for all that, I do get all choked-up and misty-eyed and warm-and-fuzzy when it comes to the lighting of the torch.

I mean, never mind the competition part of it: there's all those young atheletes and this is one of the most memorable moments of their lives, in another country, with other young folk. And I like that they're being young. They gawk and wave and play. You can feel their excitement and fun and thrill and comradery. There are all the flags, and there's pride, but also unity, because they're all atheletes and here for the same purpose.

It's kinda neat. And the torch lighting is one of the rare unifying symbols the world has. So all those past winners bring the torch on up and there's that feeling of tradition and such, passing on their youthful moment to this new crop of competetors. They get that fire blazing and you know the games have begun. And you hope that, at least here, and at least till the games end, politics will be suspended.

I dunno. Maybe it's just that feeling of going to summer camp--or in this case, on that winter ski or cabin trip.

I sure have fallen hard for Shawn White by the way, the Flying Tomato. What a cutie. I know next to nothing about the skiboarding and I could *still* tell from what little I saw of him in practice that he's a natural master--hypnotic to watch. And there was a point during the opening ceremonies when he was just gazing at the show with mouth open in genuine awe. Wonderful.

Oh, I love Shawn. He is a brilliant snowboarder and an amazing skateboarder and surfer as well.

My crush this year is that cute twink Dutch speed skater, Sven Kramer. *swoon*

Local Pride running huge here...not only is Shawn White from Carlsbad, but John Baldwin grew up in Poway...very cool for SoCal to be so well represented in the Winter Olympics....
