So I'm having one hell of a day today in work. I'm running with 14 patients as the only Aide on the floor. I was lucky though as two of the three R.N.'s step up to the plate and give me a hand when they can. (Hey they were busy too.) The third R.N. on the other hand is of the mindset that the only good Aide on the Floor is the Aide being worked to death. She goes out of her way to find things for "Her" Aide to do.

Unfortunately for her this R.N. is also sadly lacking in people skills. SHe is imprious and loves to talk down to people. Her nick name on the floor is "The Princess".

By noon all of my patients have been cared for and I have a couple of new ones coming in. One of them is being treated for a major infection caused by a Breast Implant. (Put in to rebuild her breast after surgery.) The Breast Implant had been removed but she is still in pain and suffering from the infection.

I get her settled in her room then move on. I have other patients to care for after all. When I come back I find her sitting on her bed in tears. I step into the room and ask her what's up. SHe tells me the problem. She's young and in good shape and know she is going to be completely without breasts. I grab a chair and we start talking.

I tell her my personal opinion about this. I joke with her a bit and keep her talking. By the time I left the room she was actually smiling a bit and her mother was too. (Yes Mamma Bear was there.)

When I walked out of the room she was feeling a bit better about what was going on. I had just stepped out of the room when here comes the Princess. She sees me and tells me to get a couple of things for the new patient. (Things she could have easily picked up but she was "too busy" for this.) SHe walks into the room and I over hear her ask the patient if I had been in there bothering her. I just shook my head and walked away.

When I came back to the room I saw the R.N. standing there at the foot of the bed with the patients chart in hand reading it. (She should have done this before entering the room.) She looks up from the chart and tells the patient, "So I see here they had to remove your implants huh? Well I guess you'll have to get used to looking like a guy from now on."

Needless to say the R.N. was told to leave the room by the patient and her mother. Also needless to say the patients mother immediatly started writing a letter of protest to the C.N.O.. (She also informed me she was writing me up in glowing terms so there would be no way the R.N. could try to pass the buck to me on this.) Oh both the patient and her mother are/were R.N.'s.

Oh good grief, what a bitch! That's just horrible. I'm speechless.

Have other staff members witnessed this kind of idiocy? Is there any way to discipline her or put her someplace away from patients? Gah!

Jesus.

Unfortunately RN licenses don't guarantee a vocation. I'm glad you spoke with the pt first and gave her a boost in mood before the witch with the degree got in and did more damage with her cutting words than the surgeon did with his scalpel.

Just think, all her bad karma is making our good stuff easier to accumulate.

What a thoughtless, heartless thing to say.

She needs a good bitch slapping.

And she'll still be more of a woman than that RN could ever dream of being.

Thank you I was looking for away to say pretty much the same thing.

A daughter started out working as an aid. I have heard more than one store of RNs and even LPNs like this.

One wonders how someone with that level of incompassion (is that a word? Probably not, but you know what I mean) could end up training as a nurse. What the hell was she thinking when she signed on?

She was thinking it would be a good paycheck.

She was NOT, of course, thinking about what her responsibilities would be.

No doubt. It is a shame that you don't have to pass a psych evaluation before beginning training. It would week out the totally inappropriate types.

I could never be a nurse, I have little enough patience with my own children when unwell, let alone strangers. I'd hate the work and be no good at it. No amount of money is worth the agony of despising your job.

Some people just don't think before they open their mouth.

After spending almost three weeks at the hospital recently you can tell who is in it for the money and who is in it for the care they give.

Those who were in it for the care were written into the thank you note by first name, the others were thanked in general!

I think nurturing is a trait, if you don't have it, dont try to be nurturing-it will look fake!

You d'best Cat!

What CAT reports isnt unusual. And worse happens.

I dont know why it is, but almost all the hospital cases I had involved nurses setting up new or young mothers for official abuse. Like...giving a new mom an unprescribed sedative (phenobarbital) then calling in a drug abuse report when mom tests positive. An HIV positive mom gave birth and the nurse called in a drug abuse report on mom (mom tested negative). Etc.

MDs are equally as bad. When they screw up a diagnosis they call in medical neglect reports on the mom. Or sexual abuse reports for bubble-bath skin rash.

You also get this kind of thing when people burn out and forget why they got into the profession.

Cat, sometimes I wish I could bitchslap some of the people you work with. What a bitch!
