LOS ANGELES - The U.S. Postal Service turned to the characters of "Star Wars" for inspiration Wednesday as it unveiled 15 new first-class stamps featuring the whole gang from Chewbacca to Darth Vader.

The stamps were unveiled at Grauman's Chinese theater in Hollywood where the original "Star Wars" movie opened 30 years ago. The stamps will go on on sale on May 25, after a contest to choose the most popular of the stamps.

Among the "Star Wars" characters depicted on the stamps are Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Yoda, Darth Vader, R2-D2, C-3PO, Princess Leia, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Boba Fett.

The images are from all six "Star Wars" films and David Failor, executive director of stamp services for the U.S. Postal Service, said, "Because of the movies' popularity, we believe these stamps have the popularity of reaching the blockbuster status of the Elvis stamp."

Earlier in the month to publicize the new stamps, about 400 mailboxes around the country were designed to look like R2-D2.

oh oh oh oh oh oh .....I was going to do a thread about this and totally forgot.

There's an R2D2 mailbox near my office. I saw it yesterday for the first time. SOOOOOO cute!

:nana:

would be cool to have ppl who see them take a picture of the R2-mail box and post it.

It would be really cool if they had it set up that it did R2-D2 sounds when mail is deposited... well .. as long as they don't set them up that way in Boston.

Too true.

The mailboxes are really cute though.

Hi, My name is ES and I'm a Star Wars geek....pleasure to meet you...

Yes this is so cool.... :nana:

They should put one of those mailboxes in DC..It would be interesting to see how long it takes for it to get vandalized LOL

I know a couple people who collect stamps and they say the stuff the post office puts out these days are garbage. That any mass produced stamp aimed at collectors is inherently worthless. I think they're cool as hell and that people who collect stamps need to lighten the fuck up.

These stamps are going to be popular regardless of the collectors.

What? Aren't we working on 3 generations of Star Wars fans by now? There are going to be a LOT of people who will have FUN using these stamps.

Is the stamp for Princess Leia a picture of her in the slave girl outfit? The guys will be licking the front of the stamp instead.

It will probably be the one with her in the white dress and the coffeecakes on her ears.

I'll get a sheet of the Jar Jar Binks stamps, because I think that people really need to be reminded of that character.

i'd like to save one of each. just for my own fun. Like KRC said, they won't be collectors items for years and years, if at all.

I'd use ones of the Emperor and Vader to send in bills if I didn't epay them all now adays.

No problem. There's one right outside of Penn Station that I and Shameless Flirt see every morning as we walk to work.

Maybe we could make it like the telephone booth photos on the back cover of 2600. :nana:

I'd love to see George Lucas sue the Govt. and win. It could happen if Edwards won the presidency.

I'm sure he licenced the use of the images. Probably getting cent or two for every one sold.

So, can you use these stamps to mail letters to a galaxy far far away?

(I can't believe I'm the first one to make this stupid joke)

Damn. I need to get Perg or CJ to send me a first day cover.
