Three Nights of the Moon
This is the OOC thread for Three Nights of the Moon.
Please note that this is a time-limited story. It will take place over three game days, from midnight to midnight. I know it is sometimes difficult to have writers who can sustain their roles through the end of a story. Since this tale will have a definite ending, I encourage those who wish to join to please commit themselves to seeing their character through to the end. Of course, if RL gets in the way we’ll deal with it; just keep the communication lines open with the rest of us.
This story is a takeoff on the classic horror movies of the 30s/40s. Think Young Frankenstein. The classic characters will appear: mad scientist, created creature, werewolf, hunchback, and more. While it would be easy to make a long colorful list of characters, I’d like to avoid the necessity of people doubling up on their roles. This should be fun, not a chore. So I’ve pared the list down to several major roles, some of which have already been taken. Minor roles are available if there is enough demand. Please fill the major roles before taking on one of the minor ones. There are obviously several “classic monsters” which are not represented. Again, if the major roles get filled, I will consider other suggestions if they serve to move the storyline.
Consider the source when creating your character’s personality and using his powers. Stick with how they have been defined in the old black & whites. In fact, I’ll be imagining the whole story in black and white, and that may help you too. This is meant to be a campy gothic horror story. Don’t be afraid to show a sense of humor, while keeping the appropriate atmosphere.
On the question of violence: if necessary. I don’t see any reason why any characters need to be hurt badly, let alone killed. If you do think that violence will move along a certain part of the story, just be sure you have permission for the actions from the other player who would be affected. Again, keep in mind the overall tone of the tale.
These are the main parts:
Synopsis:
In a distant castle lives a mad scientist trying to recreate the lost love of his life, who only exists as a disembodied brain-in-a-jar. He's been experimenting on living people, and other things, or parts of things. His first experiment was on the hunchback. It failed, but hunch was a forgiving sort, and even though he couldn't leave the castle anymore because people chased him, the scientist offered him a job and that was nice, wasn't it? The doctoral student and his wife have arrived to help the scientist. The student thinks that the scientist is just trying to cure the people in the attached madhouse but doesn't realize the depth of weirdness, nor knows about the secret laboratory.
The student's wife is fairly clueless, a city person in the country and, on the surface, a sweet dumb tourist. The housekeeper is secretly in love with the scientist and will do anything to protect him.
The wolfwoman stumbled onto the castle some time past and was accepted there. Like the hunch, she can't go out in wolf form, but that only happens during the full moon. She does some work for the scientist, but mainly mopes about in boredom. Wolfie wants a mate but, having no social skills, is pretty lousy at meeting new people. But during the change, her inhibitions break down. Lately she has been spying on the farmer's daughter.
The creature is a different angle on the experiment, one the scientist is pleased with. He is intelligent and well-read, just with a monster's body. The creature nearly killed the scientist when it realized the full meaning of his new life, but they struck a deal. If the scientist will make him a mate, the creature will forgive him and they will go off to the south tower to live alone. The scientist agreed, but secretly decided that he doesn't want to waste the opportunity. So his latest experiment is actually to resurrect his lost love for himself. He intends to isolate the creature and animate his lost love, then they'll stay together with the creature locked away in the madhouse.
The lost love will exist for the first day as a disembodied brain, able to talk and hear, but not see. During the second day she will awaken in her new body. The scientist is planning a party for the third night to celebrate the resurrection of his lost love, although he’s disguising it as just a masquerade ball (what kind of costumes will these weirdos wear??) The event will be catered by the farmer’s daughter, known throughout the village for gardening skills.
The escaped madperson is running around the house and the grounds, or the town, or the woods, or wherever. He or she is a sexual predator who loves to be caught masturbating in public places. The farmer's daughter has noticed a person watching her at night. It's actually two, wolfwoman and the madperson. Wolfie is ready to take her on the full moon and make her a werewolf too; the other just wants to do his/her thing.
If extra roles are needed:
The constable and the handsome young deputy are checking out the daughter’s story, and possibly her mother too, the farmer’s widow. The fortuneteller foresees trouble this night, and will want to warn people for a price. Her son and another gypsy girl will be in the woods, interacting wherever.
The ancient castle is huge, with secret doors and passages, and no one knows them all. Housekeeper and hunch know them the best, then the scientist, then wolfwoman and the creature. Others know none, or maybe only one.
I will control non-player creatures, encounters, and weather. The days will change when I announce it, every game day midnight. The story will cover three days and nights, from 12:01 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. over the three nights of the full moon. Day 1 will be partly cloudy but nice. Day two will dawn red, and the weather will start to turn in afternoon. Evening will bring the thunderstorm, with an occasional rip in the clouds to show the moon. Day 3 will be overcast and rainy, occasional thunderstorms, cooler later and high winds, scattered clouds in evening and night, a classic Halloween night.
