OOC: The Lands Awake

This is the ooc thread for a thread I am considering, "The Lands Awake." The idea is based on both superheroes and the old magical idea that the lands themselves, each nation or even area, are magically imbued with their own spirit that gives the nation or region its own personality. The idea is that the lands (present nations) ARE entities in their own rights but take little direct action to interfere with the lives of mortals. However, sensing an approaching cataclysm (not decided exactly which yet, but possibly the apocalypse type of situation), several of them have selected an individual from their nation to imbue with superpowers. Now, of course, the individuals may not be keen on the selection, but understanding and believing the news from the nations' spirits would be willing to fulfil their roles. Thus reluctance for any character must be overridden by their sense of duty (no recalcitrants or villains). Name, uniform, powers should be based on the nation's 'personality' - think of the difference between african, asian, western cultures - or even between closely related cultures like England, America...

Anyhow, I'm gonna leave this open now and see if there's much interest. A couple of final points: Only one person will be selected per nation - if more than one person wants to play an American character therefore, this is the thread to argue between yourselves. My original idea for selecting names was to have each character named after an olden name for the country... I'd appreciate input on this idea, if not then we'll just use an emblam of the country. Finally, remember this is characters from individual countries, normally this is obvious, but in some cases you may have to think about it (eg, no character of Britannia, as Britain itself is made of 3 nations - England, Scotland and Wales).

Well, I'm German, so that would be my obvious choice...however I fear that some may be offended if I go on about the 'Germanic Spirit'...although I would be talking about the true Germanic spirit, i.e. before Hitler defiled it, proud, fierce, but also righteous and honourable.

But I can also choose another country, just let me think a while...

Excellent, that's the nearest I've come so far to being able to start a thread: if I can get one more person to join, I'll go ahead and set up the thread. Meanwhile, I'm gonna leave the powers your characters get in your own hands, so feel free to start working them out - and even post a few ideas here...

BTW: Germania (roman name) or any of the other 'spirit of Germany' is perfectly fine. To be honest, it would be fine if someone wanted to be the spirit of Iraq - providing this was the HEROIC spirit. I think people who know an indepth amount about any nation can come up with what is positive about the national spirit - that is DIFFERENT from any individual political climate. The Nazis were just one unfortunate time in German history, a time most nations have if we look deep enough. You might as well define Spain as the inquisition (an equally depraved nonsense).

Welcome aboard Kitsuke... I'll get this kicked off in the next couple of days. Meanwhile.. names and powers, friends.. names and powers. Remember these are old names for the spirit of the nation, and powers representing that national spirit.

My name is Senshuken no Tenshinchigi. From time immemorial the people of Japan had lived as the kami willed it. Prosperity, power, abundance and love were the rewards for their honor and fidelity.

Late in the nineteenth century these ideals were corrupted by the oni. Through human agents they influenced dictators. Power-mad despots, styling themselves as rightful emporor's took the land and raped it. Myself and my brothers and sisters were forced into hiding in the face of this sin. The rash actions of the "Imperial" line ultimately caused tragedy.

The people of the new world, Americans they called themselves, were attacked by this people. The war went poorly for a time for the younger culture and then the unimaginable happened. The might of Japan, a fleet to bring the world to it's knees, was defeated. Very nearly utterly. Pressing their advantage, the rash new worlders did something quite rational at the time. Ultimately, it was unspeakable. Harnessing the power of the atom they dropped weapons of great powe on the land. I know now the oni had a hand in this as the two targets they chose were the refuges of my family. Exactly. The only reason I am alive is I was not present, I had gone to ground away from the safety of these refuges, I had been guarding the retreat and had not made it before the Sleep came upon us.

After, the People lost their ideals. Broken and without hope, they turned to these new people for guidance. The Americans brought them up like a caring parent who has just disciplined a child. Giving them manufacturing capability, training and material, the Americans gave the People new weapons, and these nearly toppled the might of America in part of late 20th century. The Americans proved more adaptable than that, though, and soon once again the competition was on an even keel.

Even though it was not as intentional, this was bid for power on the part of the People. Seeing it fail to gain utter success, most came to a realization that no one could overpower all. Some began to rediscover the roots of their beliefs. Honor returned to the land. The oni had weakened their own influence through the weakening of the Heavenly Presence.

Something is changing, I can feel it deep within me. My time is coming, soon I will awake.

Powers: Australia is only know for two things. Water and it's huge desert. So the powers will be fire and water.

Avory was a goddess celebrated by the Aboriginies. When colonists (prisoners) from England arrived, Avory's spirit changed, and for the better. She's now a more relaxed and definintely down to earth sort of gal.

Powers are as follows (pretty much)

Sword of Purity - this is a blade that he can summon to his hand at will, it takes the form of a japanese katana (duh) but it is pure energy, it is as powerful as the honor of the wielder and the faith and piety of his peoples(as they come back to the true path, this weapons power will grow), it's special purpose is to defeat oni and beings of corruption

Steady Gaze, Steady Track, Steady Heart - this allows him to meet any foe without flinching, pursue his purpose doggedly, and never flinch from any task no matter how daunting. he is very determined

Light of the True Way - as he wills it he can emit a glow that signifies his semi-divine nature, supernatural beings of less power than him (none of the spirits of the land mind you) feel at least extreme discomfort if not outright pain if they have evil or dark intentions. it will also reveal those who are hidden by dark arts. supernatural creatures of equal or greater power will be annoyed by his bothersome glow

Dragon of the Land - In the most dire of circumstances the dragon tattoo on his body will animate itself and replace him entirely, it is another consciousness, older than himself, he has no control over it and remembers nothing of what it does. to date it has only "come alive" twice. why it chose him he does not know. he can communicate with it, converse with it and ask it questions, although it is picky about which ones it will answer
