I wanted to give a crack at a group furry thread in a different context than the usual night/strip club setting. So I figured I'd try something a little more low key.

The city is San Domino, a town along the coast in Southern California. It was established back in the 1800's by a Catholic missionary, but soon integrated people from all walks of life. In the last few generations, furries have become the predominant group, with the humans that still live there sticking to a couple of residential districts.

The neighborhood is Hilltop, the city's artistic district. Hilltop shows the city at its finest and its worst in terms of culture. More than three quarters of all the buildings have some manner of professional grafitti art on them. Illicit substances are very common. Street performers are everywhere. And the city's youth have all but monopolized the traffic in the area.

The place is The Fire Circle, the city's largest and most popular cafe. It's a rarity among the other coffee shops in the area in that it actually has two floors open to the public.

The first floor is the coffe shop proper, featuring many exotic imported coffees and teas, and a reputation for some of the finest baked goods in the city (all supplied by the neighboring bakery, which is run by the sister of the cafe's owner). A stage is set up for open-mic nights and poetry slams held 5 days a week, Tueday and Sunday being the only off days.

The second floor contains a small bookstore filled with hard to find books, used and new, as well as a small gallery for local artists and photographers to show off their work.

The clientelle run the gamut from Goths, to metalheads, to students, to punks, to hippies, to street preachers, to stoners, to beatniks, to art buffs, and everything in between. The owner is a raccoon girl named Sandy Biggs (see below picture). If anyone is interested in playing her, the character is open, as is her sister Melissa (no picture at the moment).

Anyone wanting to participate must first post a character (picture optional, but preferred) and get a consensus from everyone else. If possible, try to work out a plot between you and another participant via PM. You're also free to invite others to join. Just so long as no one is left out in the cold. Multiple characters are permitted if you think you can manage.

The two characters I will be playing are the Ritari brothers, described below.

Name: Jari Ritari
Race: Wolf
Age: 21
Orientation: Straight
Appearance: Jari is 6' tall with a solid black pelt and yellow eyes. He's lean and tough-looking with an intense stare, even for a wolf. He dyes red tribal patterns into his fur, and wears all black to match his pelt. To compensate for the hot California summers (in comparison to other places he's lived in the past), he usually wears something with decent ventilation, often going around in his trench coat with no shirt underneath. Since the local laws regarding furries and clothing are rather lax, this is nothing unusual. He has a velvety bass voice, but is usually soft-spoken and a man of few words.
http://fc03.deviantart.com/images/i/2003/52/5/2/do_the_fandango.jpg
Description: The older of the Ritari brothers by about 4 minutes, Jari and his brother Niko are Finnish-American wolves. Fluent in both English and Suomi, they both have a mild accent, though Jari's is more noticeable. When first hearing him speak, many people mistake him for being Russian. He got into martial arts and photography at a very young age, and both have become a lifelong interest of his. He currently possesses a black belt in Jeet Kune Do and Shaolin Kung-Fu, and has had some of his digital work displayed at The Fire Circle before. His specialty is in cityscapes and using digital image altering to create gritty, edgy urban fantasy worlds.
Jari also provides vocals and sometimes bass guitar when he and his brother perform at the Circle's open-mic nights. Though they share common ground on a love of heavy metal, Jari is more into Goth rock, being influenced by bands such as Type O Negative, Bauhaus, The 69 Eyes, and After Forever. This results in a number of interesting original tunes and covers that the two have performed.
Jari is quiet and an archetypal straight man. He's very organized and analytical, feeling uncomfortable in situations where he has little or no opportunity to plan ahead or back up and assess the goings-on. Though generally friendly and peaceful, his demeanor often comes across intimidating to those who haven't met him before. Sadly, he's unaware of this fact, and secretly wonders why more people don't just talk to him.

Name: Niko Ritari
Race: Wolf
Age: 21
Orientation: Straight
Appearance: It's hard to tell that Jari and Niko are brothers, nevermind twins. Niko is grey-furred with white patches and a mop of overgrown black hair on the top of his head. A playful grin is always plastered to his muzzle, and his eyes are perpetually shining with mirth and energy. He typically dresses in loose-fitting clothes and has a penchant for urban camo. His style of dress is partly because it's more ideal for his favorite sport: Parkour. His Traceur name is Loki, and he's become something of a local figure in Hilltop due to his dangerous Parkour jams across the district. He's boisterous, loud, verbose, and almost always moving.
http://fc03.deviantart.com/fs13/i/2007/104/3/2/Night_Wolf_by_2078.jpg
Description: The younger of the Ritari brothers, Niko seems to be the opposite of Jari. Though both are very creative and athletic individuals, the similarities end there. Niko is outgoing and bold, always looking to expand his social circle. He loves the ambience of The Fire Circle as well as the diversity of the clientelle, and has acquired a reputation as something of a flirt.
Niko has two great passions in life: Parkour and music. Parkour is a great avenue of freedom and personal expression for him, and has given him a sense of self-empowerment that is channeled in his characteristic manner of cocky bravado. He goes on jams three times a week, and is always looking for new routes and challenges, which has resulted in multiple contusions, two broken bones, and five hospital visits in the last few years. Despite these hazards, he seems content to continue on his way, and wears his scars with pride.
In regards to music, he's an accomplished guitarist on both acoustic and electric guitar. He has a fondness for heavy metal and Scandinavian folk music, and consequently his own original material features a lot of complex melodies and chanted choruses. Whenever he and Jari perform their own music at open-mic nights, it's usually acoustic material to which Jari wrote the lyrics and Niko wrote the music. He's entertained the notion of getting a band together, but for time being seems to be content right where he is. Whatever ambitions he has he usually doesn't speak much about them.

Backstory: The Ritari brothers were born in Helsinki, Finland in the dead of winter and both soon kept their parents busy with their endless energy and early aptitude for music. When the brothers were 10 years old, the family moved to Maine where they lived for 6 years before being uprooted once more when the father of the family, Jyrki, accepted a job as a museum curator in San Francisco.
At this point, both boys were showing a great artistic sense and seemed to accept that the arts would end up being their lives. While Jari became more and more obsessed with the dark side of the art world, Niko instead became more and more entranced with the Romantic warrior philosophy. By the time they graduated high school, it was difficult to tell that they were twin brothers at all.
After graduation, the boys moved out of home and down the coast to San Domino to attend the local college for the arts. It was here that Jari discovered his niche in digital photography and Niko found a greater social circle than he had ever imagined. They plan to stay in San Domino for a long time to come, and are now regulars over at The Fire Circle.

A little more background on the setting.

San Domino has several prominent districts that define some of the local color. These are not the only districts, merely the largest.

Hilltop: Hilltop, as previously mentioned, is the artistic district. It's busy at all hours with coffee shops, music stores, bistros, bookstores, art galleries, and a number of other fixtures. There's a community of grafitti artists living in an apartment building on 3rd Street who are responsible for most of the art that decorates the facades of the neighborhood. Holden Drive sports a long row of popular bars and nightclubs, each one with a distinctive theme. Among them is the space-themed nightclub Event Horizon, the Queen's Tavern, the Black Dragon Club, and Tiki Bob's Lava Lounge.

Van Patton Park: The environmentalist surge of the 90's resulted in a large expanse of urban decay being converted into a park after the land was purchased by Andre Van Patton. It's become a pristine place, tended to meticulously by a small armada of gardeners. The Berger Amphitheater recently built on the north end offers regular outdoor plays (weather permitting) by the city's theater community. In the late summer, the park grounds also play host to the city's annual Rennaissance Festival.

Little Tokyo: In the 1950's, the Japanese community in San Domino started growing. As is often the case, the immigrants all settled in one neighborhood until it became specifically a Japanese ethnic district. Today, Little Tokyo is flourishing with mostly foxes and monkeys, as well as some tigers and wolves. Naturally, the restaurants are popular spots for the locals to stop in at, but the numerous shops selling exotic and imported goods are certainly doing well for themselves.

East Homestead: Bordering Hilltop is the city's Red Light District, East Homestead. The seedier side of town, but busy all the same with numerous bars, strip clubs, pawn shops, tattoo parlors, adult bookstores, and the odd casino. Though certainly not a glamorous place, it's not run-down either and actually seems relatively clean on the surface. A small gang of pickpockets and vandals calling themselves The Tribe wander the streets both day and night. Though they rarely seek active confrontation, they're best left alone if for no other reason than the safety of your wallet.

If no on else expresses interest in the next day or two, feel free to take the part.

To try and further some creativity, here's a few other popular venues in San Domino for everyone to work with.

Oni Grill: A highly rated tepanyaki and sushi bar in Little Tokyo, the Oni Grill are well-known for having some of the best food in town. Some of the meals can get pricey, but they're well worth it. They also have some of the finest sushi chefs in San Domino and a number of specialty combinations.

The Queen's Tavern: A themed bar and restaurant that's supposedly haunted. The owners have played up the urban legend as a big selling point for the venue.

Event Horizon: A successful nightclub in Hilltop with a sci-fi theme. The floors, walls, and ceiling are painted solid black and have only recessed lighting. White fiber optics are stuck in the surfaces to create the appearance of stars, and thus giving the club the atmosphere of dancing in outer space.

Colony 13: Another establishment from the owners of Event Horizon, Colony 13 is an entertainment complex with laser tag, an arcade, miniature theater showing old sci-fi movies, and a bar and food court. Again, a heavy science fiction theme distinguishes the venue, and it has become a popular destination on weekends, especially among college students.

The Waterfront: A stretch of beach popular with the younger crowd due to the boardwalk populated by buskers, strip malls, and several obligatory Tiki bars.

San Domino Arts Center: A small college for the arts, it offers courses in everything from painting to photography to music to filmmaking. Many believe that the founding of the college 40 years ago was a huge part of what made San Domino the community it is today.

hmm...i could so play the owner of a nightclub....but we need more gals

Works for me. Post in hte IC thread whenever.

This also seems like a good time to point out that in order to try and maintain some order in the thread, I'll be acting as timekeeper. I ask everyone try and stay in the same basic timeframe and avoid large transition (i.e. going to the next day) until everyone else is ready.

For the most part I don't think this should be a problem, but please try to keep up with others' storylines so that we can avoid any confusing time discrepencies between players.

I do NOT need another thread. But I'm in. :D So's lost_pirate, but she's going to bed so I'll post the link to her pic for now, and she'll bio later on.

Mine!
Name: Kaylee Tang
Age: 20
Appearance: 5'6", blue eyes and hair that changes color as often as her mood. She likes bright colors, and wears them often. Almost always has her roller blades on or nearby, and usually wears clothes that let her move freely. She looks sweet and innocent. Don't be fooled by that, because she's not. http://www.furaffinity.net/full/703258
Personality: She's sweet, but not innocent. She rollerblades everywhere, because she's saving for a car. Highly motivated, works as the laser-tag girl at Colony 13 and the girls' basketball coach for the local high school.
Background: Born in China, family moved here when she was 5. Her parents moved away last year, leaving her enough money to live, but not terribly wealthy.

Link is forbidden, but other than that it sounds fine to me. Post in the IC thread whenever you please.

Blargh. I put a different link to the pic up. It should be better now.

Very nice. She seems the type of person that would run in Niko's circle of friends.

I'm with Hook, don't need another thread, but I can't pass up a chance to play a furry. I'll post a bio tomorrow when I have more brain power.

If it meets with approval, I'd like to throw my hat into things. Here's the character idea I had.

Name: Trevor Mustang
Age: 23
Race: Human (Caucasian)
Appearance: Trevor is 6' tall and lanky, with chestnut brown hair and large, observant brown eyes. He wears glasses to read, but not most of the time. Trevor usually dresses in casual clothes, though he has a penchant for wearing slacks instead of jeans. His usual look is an unbuttoned long sleeve shirt over a t-shirt, with dark colored slacks and a pair of blue Chuck Taylors. Occasionally, he dressed more formally. He carries a messenger's bag with him that contains books, star charts, telescope readings, and his laptop.
Personality: Trevor is intelligent and friendly, if somewhat shy. He's a kind person, but is not very confrontational and is often not aggressive enough. As mush as he likes others, he's often very much in his own head. He works as a Teaching Assistant at his college, and enjoys talking and even debating many things. His status as one of the few humans in the Hilltop is something he really hasn't noticed, as he often just doesn't notice social things.
Background: Grew up in a rural town in Pennsylvania, and fell in love with the stars and outer space at an early age. Moved to San Domino for college and the observatory, and has pretty much settled in the city. He lives modestly on grants and a Teaching Assistanceship.

Trevor should actually provide some nice color if for no other reason than illustrating the shrinking human presence in San Domino, so I approve.

Looking forward to bios from lost_pirate and I_Am_Lust as well.

Is it alright if we just give a description instead of a picture?
>> I believe I'm being stalked. *pounces Armphid and giggles* Stalker. *says it playfully*

If you really can't find a decent picture, don't worry about it. A strong description will do the job just as well.

*sticks her tongue out at Lusty*
He is a stalker. Stalking me, that is!

*hugs Lusty*
You're stalking me too, aren't you?

*hugs Lust and Hookerboots, one in each arm* Girls, girls. Let's not quibble about who's stalking who. Isn't it more important that we all get close enough to cop a feel...I mean, uh, hug. Yes, hug. ;)

This sounds like fun. Heres a bio for you all to play with.
