This is the long awaited SRP by moi, is an initially an invitation thread only for Ariosto and Snork Maiden who will be playing the leading roles, there will however be parts for other notable members of the ‘Borgias’ Family, a couple of Popes, Several High ranking Cardinals of Rome, and other characters hopefully as the plot progresses. If you have a particular character you would like to play please PM Ariosto or myself. If you want to join in, please post in this thread and one of us will get in touch with you.

This is the OOC – Thread so any comments suggestions, which are always welcome whether good or bad (especially bad, you can’t improve if you don’t receive criticism)

The Borgias, everyone has probably heard of them notably Lucrezia (or Lucretia) Borgias often over venerated as being a nasty piece of work. Lucrezia was in fact a very loving Mother. That doesn’t diminish the parts she plays in the violent history of the family, not actually committing murders but instigating and planning was her forte. This Italian family with Spanish ascendancy was based in the Vatican. They reigned on Avarice, Power, Lust and Murder. The Borgias could be regarded as the Mafia of the Renaissance.

The Borgias weren’t all bad however – that is to say their activities weren’t all bad. They were all very talented in their craft; they encouraged the arts and did much for the rebuilding of Rome and the Renaissance generally.
Machiavelli modelled his ‘Ideal Statesman’ on Cesare Borgia and Leonardo Da Vinci designed many war machines for Cesare.

Here is a run down of the Cast

The Villains
Rodrigo Borgia (Spanish)
Cesare, Rodrigo's favourite son (Italian)
Juan Borgia (Italian), brother of Cesare and murdered by him.
Juan was very vicious and short-tempered and he used his father's power in clever but evil dealings.
Lucreza was the sister of Cesare.
Her first marriage, at the age of 13, was to Giovanni Sforza, but it was annulled. She was then married to Alfonso of Aragon. (Cesare dispatched poor Alfonso quite efficiently).
Her third and last marriage was to the Duke of Ferra.
In the Borgia family there were two popes.
The first was Pope Callistus III and the second was Pope Alexander VI.

Some enemies of the family were the Medicis, Sforzas, Savonarolas and rulers outside the Italian Peninsula. These families may provide character roles, both female and male.

The Borgias where romanticized by Alexandre Dumas, the French author, who’s other famous works include ‘The Three Musketeers’, ‘The Count of Monte Cristo’ and ‘The Man in The Iron Mask’

It is hoped that the thread will work within the framework of factuality and Dumas’ work but there is scope for improvisation naturally. There are going to be casualties along the way.

I wanted to do a thread with a dark underbelly; I personally have a passion for Dark Literature as opposed to the ‘Rose Tinted Glasses’ view of life. I find it more realistic to believe people are motivated more by ambition and lust for power and wealth than a Utopian yearning for a life of pleasure and undying love.

This is an SRP from the ‘Dark Side’, kind of a ‘Snuff’ Thread, so it’s close to the line.

Greetings little sister. Convey my best wishes to His Holiness our father. I shall be in Rome soon.

Your devoted brother Cesare

Kudos

Snorkie, ye are both do'n a grand job tae start. I'm not familiar with the Borgias, but from the first tae submissions, ye're painting a deliciously perverse and power-lusty picture. I'm groaning for each coming contribution.

Yer painting it with such rich strokes, skating the edge, its exotic. Keep it up. Wish I knew enough about the genre tae contribute sommat worthy of the two of ye.

What's the best published work in this style about the Borgias? Or are ye righting it before our eager eyes?

Hi Jamie,

I am glad you are enjoying it, I was nervous about starting this one up but having discussed it - thought it was worth a shot.

It probably going to be pretty heavy going in places but I am sure we will all try to lift those lows with some exceptional highs.

A lot of the framework I am using comes from Dumas' work but also bits and pieces from various other sources to get the 'best' view of the Borgis Family.

I do have to reiterate, they were driven by power-lust, but they were also a very influencial family doing a lot of good for Rome.

Also Roderigo is the classic double standard, he generally balances good deeds with bad :) - but there's the rub - everything should be in balance. Lucrezia on the other hand was more a pawn in her father's masterplan, but she too manipulated and plotted her own destiny becoming a well love matriarcal figure in her later years. (she was 35 - 37 when she died, but was a fervent patron of the arts)

Rosa Vanozza

First My apologies to everyone for all the Narrative and dull stuff. It isn't easy to work a lot of the plot into SRP so it's case of filling in the spaces, but I hope people are enjoying it as much as I am writing, it is a huge challenge and I am grateful for the support and also from the people writing with me.

Which brings me to the next topic.

It's is with absolutely great pleasure I am able to hand over some of the weight <phew> to SexyChele who as agreed to take the role of Rosa Vanozza, The Mother of Cesare and Luca, and the wife of Roderigo (Pope Alexander VI). a key figure and a true Matriarchial figure who was very instrumental behind the scenes for the plots and disposal of obstacles as they arose.

Welcome Chele <hugs>
Can I leave it to you and Ari to discuss the scenes after the investiture?

I am going to be very hands off with respect to other characters and only to pass the historical framework on.

Till Soon

Snork - thanks for the warm welcome! I just hope I can match the talent of you and Ari on this one!

Rosa Vanozza was born in Spain. Her family was not wealthy - in fact, they were considered poor. But Rosa had two things going for her - she blossomed into quite a beauty, and was shrewd regarding matters of politics and intrigue. In the tradition of the day, she was married young, and actually had gone through a sucession of husbands throughout her life.

She met Roderigo while in her 20s and her beauty captivated him. She became one of his mistresses, and bore him 4 children. Although approaching 40, her beauty had not faded with time or child-bearing. When her last husband had died, Roderigo was already in the Papal office and arrangements were made for Rosa to have a "token" husband in order to keep gossips at bay about any continual liasions with His Holiness.

Rosa was well aware of Roderigo's dalliances with other women, and suspected he might be too close to their daughter, but she knew better than to interfer. She was also aware of the rumors that circulated that she and Cesare were closer than a mother should be with her son, but she remained tightlipped to any questions or accusations, neither admitting nor denying any such closeness.

Rosa would eventually fall from favor with Roderigo - as most of his women did over time. But, for now, she knew she was vital to his plans and ambitions. And she intended to get her fair share of Roderigo's wealth and influence before she, too, became part of his "past".

(Snork, if this is not in keeping with what you had in mind, please let me know, k?)

Hey Chele,

Welcome once again.
Great intro, I never really got time to describe all the key characters, good job!

A couple of additions to make more for your own info incase you hadn't already discovered them.

Rosa's 'token' husband's name was Don Manuel Melchoir, another spaniard who came to Rome with the Borgias. He took the the name and title Count Ferdinand of Castile and actually resided in a house in the Street of the Lungara, near the Church of Regina Coeli, conveniently on the banks of the Tiber :) although Rosa herself spent much of her time between there (for appearances) and the Borgia apartments in the Vatican (across the Tiber)

What else. Not much you got it pretty well covered. Indeed Rosa was a key player, shrewd and ambitious for her real husband, Roderigo, and took every opportunity to increase his powerstanding, being the hand of the Pope in many behind the scenes dealings. :)

Big hugs.

Good to have you here and as to matching talent :) you surpass me already.

Snork

Yesterday (Saturday 30 Novenber 2002) The remains of Alexander Dumas, the inspiration for this OOC's main thread, were reinterred in the Pantheon in Paris.

This is a long awaited honor for this extraordinarily talented French author.

The full story is here

I would also like to thank again those people who have written and commented on this thread, yes I know it isn't like many of the others in that it is slow progress but honestly, I prefer that and I know Ari has so many other commitments so it doesn't pressure him too much either I hope. :)

And thankyou Ari, your last post really had me in tears of laughter, but I think Lucrezia is possibly going to be one step ahead LOL

Hugs to all
