This will be the OOC information for a thread I hope to start by the end of the week. The idea is that all of the characters from William Shakespeare’s plays will gather together at a good, old-fashioned Renaissance “party” – complete with food, dancing, and other forms of merriment. More of the opening details will follow in the actual thread.

Shakespeare’s plays encompassed so many different types of plays and characters, that there really is something for everyone. From the tragic “Romeo and Juliet”, to the topsy-turvy world of “Twelfth Night”, to the paradise of “The Tempest”, to the magical “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, to historical tragedies of “Antony and Cleopatra” and “Julius Caesar”.

The characters are also varied – Viola, the cross-dresser from “Twelfth Night”, the troubled Hamlet, the vile Lady Macbeth, romantic Romeo, the shrew Katharina who must be tamed, and the tragic hero Othello. There are also lots of more “normal” characters to play as well. And let’s not forget the supporting characters: Falstaff, Mercutio, Iago, Bianca, or Hero just to name a few.

Let us also remember these plays were filled with mistaken identities, sword-play, and intrigue. So you are not limited to eating, dancing, and making merry – unless, of course, you so choose to do so!

I will not ask that players speak in the language of Elizabethan England (although if you should wish to try it, I welcome the attempts!), but I will ask that you try to stay in character, i.e English Renaissance period. Also, it is assumed that all characters are living (i.e. Romeo and Juliet are still alive), and you don’t have to play opposite the same character in the play – Julius Caesar can get together with Lady Macbeth, Beatrice can try to bring Hamlet out of the doldrums, Cleopatra can attempt to seduce King Lear, and so on. Also, if you want to play, but are not familiar enough with the works of Shakespeare to determine a character, please contact me and I will help you find a character that will fit what you wish to play.

Just post the character and the play that character is from (if known) you wish to play here. If more than one person wants to play a specific character, then I will take it as first come, first served, if need be.

I welcome one and all to come and join the party!

As for me, I shall take on the role of Portia from "Merchant of Venice". Also, for anyone who remembers the recent romance between Antonio and Maria in the "Hawkes Pirate" thread, and who have wished that their romance would have continued, I have good news! WildxFire has graciously agreed to take on the role of Antonio from "Merchant of Venice", and we shall once again reprise our roles here.

The play's the thing...

I would LOVE to play Katharina from "The Taming of the Shrew"!

Oh... and if you'll have me... I'm ready for my close-up, Mr. umm... Petruchio, anyone? ;)

OOC...I thought of sneaking around as Iago but who would have the little creep. So instead I choose Othello the Moor of Venice, that way I can get more in Venice...errr, OK, let's go!

Maid of Marvels: welcome! Ariosto speaks very highly of you and I feel honored to have you join!

Ariosto: Now, now, now.....you'll put off some one from playing Iago! Personally, I think he and Lady Macbeth were made for each other! :)

OOC: My oh my...so many to choose from. Maybe Bottom (from Midsummer Night's Dream)...or Puck or Oberon for that matter. Or maybe I should choose one of the lesser known fairies like Peaseblossom, except I think she's a female...then Mustardseed maybe. Or I was also thinking maybe Rosencrantz or Guildenstern (too much Tom Stoppard in my diet, perhaps). Anyone going to play the witches from MacBeth? I'm not sure who to choose, but I definitely want to play. I wonder if I'll try to write all my dialogue in iambic pentameter or is that going too far?

I'll think about characters...if anyone wants to steal any of the above, feel free. Which character would other people like to see played?

C'mon Y'all!

Now Look! This one's to good to die!

Don't be frightened, I don't know my King Lear from Micky Mouse.

"I'd like a Denver Hamlet please, hold the hash browns."

Let's have some fun!

this sounds like too much fun

I would very much like to participate here, if I could. (I'm quite a Willie S. fan from college study, appearing in different Shakespeare plays and my continuing study.) I would very much like to take the part of Hamlet, if it is still open. Always did want to play that broody Dane. *G* Or if not, maybe either Prospero or Caliban. Please let me know which fits in best with your plans for the thread.

help!!!

Dear SexyChele and everyone else involved,
this is my first request to join a srp thread. I'd really like
to play a minor character and need some help in choosing. My first concern is the time involved in creating and maintaining a role. I'm inexperiencd enough to not understand the time reauirements and don't want to spoil anyone elses fun. I'd like to be of the fairy folk-female-submissive but no push over (does that really make any sense..lol) Anyway i'd really appriciate any help, direction, or advise from the more experience players. You all do such wonderful work.
thanks ever so much
faith

Aristo: still summing up the courage to come in for a drink :)

Sojourner: I would feel honored to have you join us. And anything involving Shakespeare would absolutely HAVE to have Hamlet. I believe you, my friend, could do him justice.

Faith: I would be happy to have you involved. It sounds as though one of the characters from a Midsummer Night's Dream would be what you have in mind. Let me get a list of "possibles" together for you, and you can select which one you think might be interesting.

How involved you get is totally up to you - if you find you are having a good time (which I hope!), you may choose to become more involved. First off, while you might have some development to do, the character would already be in existence. You would just need to add your personal "style" to it. Just as though you were acting! When I get a list together for you, I will PM you, and you will understand more about what I am saying here.

Also, you will find that with Ariosto, Maid of Marvels, Sojourner, and HippieChick, we have a great assembly of players. All more than willing, including myself, to answer any questions you might have or provide any suggestions if you get "stuck". (we all have on occasion, and have turned to other players, so don't feel shy)

As far as time constraints, well, we all have them. RL has a way of doing that to us. Some of us can post more often than others at various times. Other players are only able to do one or maybe 2 posts per day. Most folks won't get upset with you over that. If you need to be gone for an extended time (more than a couple of days), it is always considered polite to let your fellow players know that you will be off the boards for a while so they may play "around" you until you get back.

But, as always, the first and most important thing is to have fun. Relax, enjoy the company of the other players, and just go with it. Will you make mistakes? Yes....I know I did. You laugh about them with your fellow players and move on. This is not serious, life-changing events here - it's supposed to be fun. So enjoy, Faith, and welcome!

To all others: I will begin the thread either this afternoon or this evening ~

Oh! This thread sounds like lots of fun. I would very much like to play the party of Tatianna, from a Midsummer's night dream.:)

I may not be able to post everyday, so if this will be a problem, please let me know and I will step down.

LittleRedDevil: Did you mean Titania, the queen of the fairies or was there another character named Tatianna?

Welcome, LittleRedDevil! I'm not so concerned that people can't post everyday, just as long as they have a good time!

And, yes, I believe you do mean Titania? Queen of the Fairies from Midsummer Night's Dream. Easy to get the names confused a lot of times, I know!

To everyone: The thread will be opened and ready for play tonight! If some are still considering joining the party, just post your character here and go ahead and join the party!

character????

dear chele and the other players,
thanks for the input about character choices...I don't know anything about these characters but I think I'd like to go with mustardseed... I just like the name. The problem is that I really don't know the character traits shakespeare assigned to "it". Strengths and flaws...so before I jump in .... HELP!!!!
thanks and happy playing!!!
faith

Hmmm...this sounds sort of interesting. Hamlet is probably my first choice...but I see that's taken. Let me see, Yorick was probably my favorite personality (if we could only all be as Hamlet speaks of him), but he's dead, and sort of funny looking I think. Macbeth was too pussy whipped to be appealing (but I suppose that's all a point of view). Ariel maybe? Puck (or other assorted super studs)?
How about Mercutio, honor above all, but I hate that play. Who else is more like me...Henry, Richard, Ceaser...damn I'm boring.
Or perhaps one of the comedies...I think that If I was Don John women would not only think that I looked like Keauna Reeves, but that it sort of sounds like Don Juan. Any suggestions.

Ben

In faith, Faith...

Mustardseed is one of the fairies that Titania assigns to take care of Bottom when she falls in love with him. It was not a large part, actually.. so develop the character as you like and have fun.

Faith: Mustardseed is fine. The part of the fairies are not given specific descriptions, so you get to do that! Do you want to be a small pixie, such a "Tinkerbell" character? Would you like to be a lovely lady with flowing locks and wings? How do YOU imagine a fairy named "Mustardseed" would look? Act? And then go with that. Hey, it may not be what some one else's perception of the part might be, but, then, they aren't playing the role, are they? You are! Make her your own, and have fun with her!

1handedtyper: Dude! You crack me up! Are you sure you wouldn't want to take on Mercutio? We aren't living out the play, just the character, and it seems you have a certain wit! I'd like to see one of the historical figures involved, but I understand that they may not be as exciting. (Though it may be rather amuzing seeing Kind Lear chasing one of the lovely ladies about the hall!) Have you considered Benedick from Much Ado About Nothing? Strong, stubborn type, very witty, thinking himself the manly man and that Beatrice just can't help herself? Of course, there is always Antony....every woman's dream of the brave soldier come to seduce them. And who could resist Puck? With your wit and humor, I could see you as Mercutio, Benedick, or Puck. But, the most romantic of the characters would have to be Benedick. I leave it in your hands.

Maid of Marvels: just wanted to comment that I thoroughly enjoyed your first post! Great job! And HippieChick, if you are reading this....wonderfully done! Gosh, got some good talent going on so far!

SexyChele: Thanks for the compliment. That one took a while to write. I'm not sure if I can keep it up, though. I was never very good with iambic pentameter. At least I wasn't trying to rhyme, like Maid of Marvels. I don't think I'd be able to pull that off anywhere near as well as she did!

Hey, thanks you guys!

Writing in rhyme is a breeze. Rhyming lends itself so nicely to my sense of the absurd...

Iambic pentameter? Now THAT is a verse of a different color. It was Shakespeare's preferred form and I would so love to be able to write coherently in it. HC did a wonderful job! (And made it look easy besides. Brat!)

Perhaps if I had a better command of Old English? Anyone know where I can find a glossary online? (Need a cheat sheet)

For anyone interested, pentameter (five feet/iambs - a unit of stressed and unstressed syllables) would look/sound something like this:

she SINGS of LOVE in JUNE and THINKS of HIM

I'm still threatening to give it a try though... :D I just never know what will come off this keyboard. It just seems to have a will of its own.

Oy, and now SoujournerWolf writes in perfect Shakespearean sonnet form! He's outdone us all!

*blush*

Perfect? Hardly. But thanks for the compliment...and thanks for not asking how long it took me to come up with that little verse. *ROFLMAO*

Now, now, Sojourner! I, for one, have actually taken the time to read your stories and poetry from your home boards and know just how capable a writer you are! It may have taken you all afternoon to compose, but your post surely brought a smile to my face. I anxiously await the beautiful Katharina's response!

And HippieChick, don't think you have yet to be bested! My goodness, can a girl ask for better talent than what she's seeing here? Hardly.

BUT! For those still watching how this is progressing - and I notice there is quite a few - please do not be put off by the talented crew that has assembled here so far. As for me? I can only write in simple English. Well, Ok, my character may lapse slightly into Italian in this post as soon as my Antonio appears. (if you want to know how to do that, just ask - I'll share) So please don't think you have to write "perfect Shakespeare". Enjoy what you read, write how you feel you can, have fun along the way!

blush, blush, blush

Dang...and here I am working on a story this afternoon where some hard boiled private dick has just
chambered into her like a new round into a freshly cleaned and oiled Sig Sauer.

Since I haven't mentioned it before Thank You for providing this wonderful new thread. *G*

Right. All the thanks belongs to the one who came up with the idea in the first place. So many good characters come from good old Willie. I, for one, would like to see more fairies, but then I've always had a soft spot for supernatural women. Glad to see MustardSeed show up. Didn't mention her in my last post, though. Will have to fix that in the next one.

And ditto to what SexyChele said. Just because some of us have decided to devote way too much time to the form of our posts doesn't mean that you have to. The more the merrier!

Benedick

I think I have decided on Benedick, the "charmer" of Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing. I choose him over characters that are probably more similar to me because, well, he's more fun than most of them. Anyway, because I have to come up with something that is more clever than I am, you'll have to give me some time. I think I may post an introduction on the thread today, but I need to think of some clever verse. Thanks.

Ben and Benedick
