Dreamscape.

It all started with scientific experimentation on the patterns of sleep. An independent research group developed rudimentary way to send radio waves directly into the brain to lull a subject to sleep; this itself wasn't spectacular as there were already a plethora of drugs capable of the same thing, the greatest achievement of this was it used a humans own natural rest system to restore the body thus it nearly eliminated all side effects.

As with all emerging technologies the commercialisation of it was inevitable and so the same company that funded the study placed a considerable amount of time and money to create a product to sell. Thus the Sandman 1.0 was born.
The first design had a base unit the size of a dialysis machine with just as much dials and moving parts, a face mask that was hooked up to the device would be placed around the subjects face and eyes which would then emit the signal into the brain. Due to the encumbersome nature and high cost the first version was only purchased by hospitals, the military, and the very wealthy.

Once people experienced the technology on themselves, friends or loved ones it wasn't long before the demand for a public version was needed. The company, now known as Dreamscape attracted many wealthy investors and benefactors to replicate their technology for the masses. After a few years and a considerable amount of money and resources the Sandman 2.0 was born.

This version was far less encumbersome than its predecessor and more affordable. The controls were simplified and the power requirement was reduced significantly. To the average user it was no more expensive than getting any other entertainment device. Although not every household owned one it was fast becoming the most popular and stable piece of equipment in any home across the globe.

"Having trouble sleeping after a big night? Stress at work giving you insomnia, with the Sandman 1.0 all it takes is flick of switch and your off for a good night's rest. No need for drugs and other crazy rituals; now you can start everyday with a full nights rest."

Now that their product was in the public market revenue increased tenfold and with a strong marketing campaign they were quickly becoming a household name. Dreamscape made use of their new income to further research into their technology, specifically in dream studies.

That's where Sandman 3.0 came in. Up until this point dreams were still a mystery to the scientific community, no one knew why humans had dreams or how to control them until Dreamscape had a breakthrough using their cutting edge new technology. The Sandman 3.0 allowed the user to retain 95% awareness inside a dream, not only would they be able to experience the dream without the fog of confusion, at the end of the session they could recall specific details of their dream.

As theorised from previous studies in the past, a person's dream was made up of their own experiences and knowledge presented to them in an incoherent manner. During this time the brain isn't functioning at it's normal capacity. This of course is part of the natural sleep cycle and is needed for a person to recover during sleep, Sandman 3.0 however was able to circumvent the process and allow the user to both gain the benefits of sleep and the retain the experience of the dream. The device was also able to detect what an average user considered nightmares and users had the option of filtering out these kind of dreams.

"Ever had a dream you loved but couldn't recall the details? Now you can with Sandman 3.0; our new and improved dream recognition software allows you to remember and recall every dream you have."

The Sandman 3.0 was a complete success, Dreamscape had expanded its distribution centers to nearly every part of the world. The older 2.0 version was sold at a much cheaper price allowing the population of lower socioeconomic standing to own their own Sandman.

During its lifespan dreamscape made many improvements to the Sandman 3.0 such as dream quality and even a rudimentary ability to record the dream itself. Their technology still relied on using the users natural ability to dream and thus they had not been able to allow users to modify their own dreams, many users preferred not having control as the entertainment value of random adventures in ridiculous situations outweighed the lack of control.

The Sandman 4.0 was the next evolutionary step in the technology, it allowed users to join each other in their dreams through a hardwire connection. Families could have a shared adventure in a single dream and dream parties became hugely popular. Although Dreamscape didn't openly advertise it many couples used the shared experience in a more intimate way.

"Why dream alone when you can share the experience with your friends and family. Sandman 4.0."

Unrelated to Dreamscape's technology electronic communication between people around the world advanced rapidly allowing them to create the Dream Network or DNet for short. This allowed users to connect to others without being in the same room. Once this technology became available to the public the expansion of the DNet grew exponentially.

It was only inevitable that a world wide shared dream would be established, it was known as Dream Hub or D-Hub for short. Users logged into the network and joined their own dream with everyone else. Their dream-self was able to move within their own dream like normal, travel to others or have others enter their own. The phenomenon was labeled as mankind's greatest achievement in shared entertainment.
