Well the ones I have played in have.........
not that I'm an expert! However, the few that I've joined in on or started have developed into quite steamy encounters.
Have you got an idea that you'd like to share? I can be quite imaginative.

ok well enjoy your 'research'............
..........lol ...........I love reading good stories, there seem to be some talented writers here , maybe you are one too. I don't get online much, work prevents that.
My guess is that a lot of people know each other and when they role play a lot of small talk goes on as well as the sex though I haven't read many long threads recently myself to make a judgement.
I started a thread about a female athlete getting a massage from a trainer which turned into sex. A woman responded and it developed into quite a nice story....
So you see I am perhaps a little biased based on my own experience.

I would say that it depends upon the writer's themselves. I've been in many threads, and rarely do my characters actually have sex. This has less to do with intent, and more to do with how the stories seem to play out.
And, actually, I've found that I've had excellent interactions with good writers in the more romantic threads.

These threads seem to go in stages, as to theme and am ount of sex in them. Myself, the stories i write have a lot of sex in them, but i like a definite plot to go with it...my threads must be morre than a wham bam thankyou Sir/ma'am style
I never actually noticed that a lot of the stories dont have much sex lol, my pet peeve these days is the two or three line posts, especially in response to a full page by a writing partner

welcome to Lit! You obviously haven't been reading... the threads I'm in. There is plenty of sex. But, to be a good story there also needs to be a plot. The best stories have a storyline and the sex just gets put in where it works, for the story.
Now, this is just my opinion, different strokes for different folks (I hate that saying, see which he made me do. He he he). But you must admit, that straight sex with no storyline, sounds good at first, but it can get boring.
So, my vote is for sex with a reason. After all, there is usually a reason for everything. And I agree, that the worst thing is 2-3 line posts. If you've gotta say it, say it loud and with meaning. See you in the funny pages...

In my experience, it's a fifty-fifty thing. About half the threads I have joined over time have become very obsessed with sex. The other half seem to have this slow buildup of sexual tension that goes on forever, I actually prefer the later threads with the constantly building sexual tension, and they tend to have the better storylines developing....but they often die before any sex happens....but if they go on for a really long time, I get horny enough to hump my pillow in my sleep (that's even when i do have a boyfriend or a girlfriend or whatever)
I have to admit though in the weirdest thread with lots of sex that I've been involved in, and at the present still am involved in, the sex isn't that important...it's only another one of the many humiliations that my character is suffering from. It's the humiliation that is the main thing on that thread. Not that I personally see sex in that way, but I'm writing a character who does see it in that way, and secretly she enjoys it all..but won't admit it, even to herself.

I haven't been writing in a while, but all my stories/SRP's have to have more than basic fucking. A plot is definitely needed...but trust me, when the sex does come around....its HOT
