OOC: HOMEFRONT 1942 Casting Call

[Maid of Marvels]

It's summer of 1942 in the New England town of Fair Harbor, and the War is getting serious. Many young men are already in uniform, rationing is getting more and more stringent and new war related industries are coming to town.

Fair Harbor, a small coastal town before the war, is seeing the effects of the conflict. Patterson's Shipyard has tripled in size and is running three shifts. A new Coast Guard station has been opened and 30 miles away at Fort Butler the Army is training flyers for the 8th Air Force. Port facilities are being expanded at an amazing pace. The USO is in full operation, scrap metal drives are being undertaken. There is talk of a new aircraft engine assembly plant moving into town.

The place is really humming!

Jack Becker, a new employee at Pattersons has been instrumental in saving Davy Moore, the son of his former supervisor, from German Uboat survivors who had taken him in desperation as a hostage. Toni Moore, Davy's older sister, has developed a strong attraction for Jack and he with her.

To date, Davy has been rescued and the German has been killed. Life in Fair Harbor goes on as they prepare to open their homes to the crew of the USS Quincy.

THE PLAYERS:

Jack and Toni will be played by ariosto and Maid of Marvels.

Jack is in his early thirties and recently released from State Prison, something no one knows about except his employer at Pattersons. There is also a mystery about Jack. A clue to it is his ability to speak perfect German, a fact that raised a few eyebrows during the rescue of Davy Moore. Jack is of medium height, stocky and good looking in a rugged sort of way.

Toni is about 23 and she too has a past. Leaving Fair Harbor immediately after High School, she lived in NYC until the death of her father and the War brought her back. She has just started work for Edgar Carmody at the Office of Volunteer Services. Toni is tall and a real eye catcher.

Elizabeth (Bette) Moore (Stardust Memory): Toni's mother, a striking and oversexed woman in her mid 40s. She was devastated by the death of her husband, but a year has gone by now and she is returning to a normal state of scandalous behavior.

Edgar Carmody (ariosto): Former editor and publisher of the Free Press, Edgar now has taken over as Chief of Office of Volunteer Services. He is sixty and still a handsome man. He's Toni's employer and rumour has it, Bette's lover.

Frank Moore Junior (Tibvo): 18 years old, he has already enlisted in the Army and is awaiting orders. He's Toni's younger brother and Davy's older one. Tall and exuberent, the High School Quarterback type.

'Slim' Sommers (Yoc ODubhthaigh): Slim is from the bad side of town, with an equally bad nature. He has plans for Maisy.

Maisy Taylor (Moneytalks): 18 years old, and very pretty, she's been Frank's girl since their sophomore year. She looks at his leaving with mixed emotions.

Marie Taylor (Moneytalks): Maisy's mom, Deak's stepmother.

Deacon "Deak" Taylor (Tibvo): Maisy's step-brother. A bad boy, the kind girls hate to love.

Edward Taylor (Zehrman): Edward is married to Marie Taylor, father to Deak (from his first marriage) and Maisy. A very conservative man, he lives mainly for his work which is generally believed to be as an engineering specialist in the army which keeps him away from home. What the people of Fair Harbor are not aware of is that he is involved in very secret and highly sensitive projects which could have an affect on the outcome of the war. Of course, no-one must know this in case the Enemy finds out about it.

Earl Talbrut (captainb): Chief of Police

Grace Anderson (Messalina): owner of the Tradewinds Bar

Colonel Thor (Thor's Hammer): Our resident fly boy from Butler AFB.

Claire Fouree (guilty pleasure): A waitress at Robinson's Diner. Her fiancé was among the first to enlist and is was killed while on active duty in the South Pacific.

Mystery Man - Johnny Bell (Graybread): Arm in arm Jack and Toni turned from the pier and walked away. One set of eyes followed them every step until they disappeared. He was a bit older than most of the swabbies and darkly handsome. He knew the striking woman. He knew her from New York, in fact he knew her very well indeed.

Nels Bronson, Lieutenant USCG (Miltone): Nels has been stationed in FairHarbor since the new CG station opened in April. He commands the small cutter, EG LAWRENCE.

Professor Taylor (mr spikey): Science teacher at Dewey High School.

Rebecca Hawthorne (Astralkiss): The town tease, Rebecca is the kind of bad girl that's still good.

NEEDED:

Any townspeople (women and men), soldiers, sailors or even secret agents you'd like to introduce.

Sub plots are more than welcome.

Fact was, Toni had headed for the big city. New York. In search of excitement. Right behind Johnny Bell, an Italian boy from the wrong side of the tracks. She couldn't resist his smile, or the way he looked deeply into her eyes. He was everything she ever dreamed of and more. Until...

Let's see, the Chief is a WW1 vet, born at the turn of the century, and had slogged through the French mud with the other millions of infantrymen who'd lived and died in the trenches. After the war, he returned home and married. Now his kids have moved on, and his wife passed away several years ago. All he's got left in his life now is the town. He'd earned the respect of the townspeople, and had won the last four elections because of his dedication. People may not always like him, may poke fun at his weight behind his back, but in general they trust him to protect them. He has his own self-respect to consider, and the police force is an extension of that.

OOC...here's an OOC for Jack Becker

Jack Becker is 5'10" he's stocky and muscular.
His hair is dark and his eyes are gray/blue. He resembles the old movie actor John Garfield. He will be 33 years old in a month.

He's worked with his hands all his life but has a sharp and inquisitive mind. He managed to finish High Scholl through corespondence courses at the State Prison. In his early and mid twenties he worked at being a prizefighter and built a respectable record. A string of losses and a life threatening injury prematurely retired him and he began a vagabond life...doing a bit of everything.

He's seen a lot of the Country during the years leading up to his imprisonment.

On a cold December night in 1939 Jack got into a scrape with some local boys and put one of them, a lawyers son in the hospital. Because he still had a license to fight in that state they laid an assault charge on him and he recieved a two year prison sentence.

He arrived in Fair Harbor only a couple of weeks ago and was able to get a job as an apprentice welder at Patterson's. He met Claire at the Harbor View Diner and she directed him to her Grandfather's home, knowing he had a room available.

Badbabysitter...develop a plausible character and post an intro here on the OOC thread...
but rememeber this thread is about the war only in so far as it reflected life in a small American town in the war years. It is not a war memorial to all who fought and died.

Frank's Personality

Essentially, he is a nice intelligent kid who sometimes gets carried away with things. Being a star quarterback at school, he is very popular.

His father's death (which had been tough on him) has made him appreciate his family, especially his mother, who he had worried about since she had taken the death so badly. He is glad that she's finally becoming her old self again.

However, his father's death has also caused him to re-evaluate his life, making him realise that there may be other things out there than just football, a steady girlfriend (his only ever girlfriend) and a mapped out future. That's why he has signed up to join the army, to see what else life has to offer.

It is only as his call-up draws near and his love for his girlfriend, Maisy, gets ever stronger that he is beginning to think that volunteering to fight may have been a rash mistake.

With blonde hair inherited from her French father and flashing blue eyes from her Irish mother, she is a combination of girl next door and dream girl. At 25, she was a couple years ahead of Toni in school but they met when Toni came with Carmody to comfort her when word came of her fiances death. They have since become fast friends. She met Jack at the diner and sent him to her Grandfather's to rent a room. She also lives at her granda's because her parents died in a car crash a couple years ago. Claire has had a lot of tragedy but her path is about to cross that of Nels Bronson, who is the spitting image of Sean Michael Sullivan, her dead fiance................

Comments: Deak's Maisy's older stepbrother. A few years back, Maisy's mother got remarried (ask MT for the details) and Deak just turned up out of the blue a year ago. Of course, Maisy was delighted that she finally got an older brother and took him into her heart.

Deak's Personality

Has a mean streak and had run-ins with the law. However, he can be a charmer which has kept him out of jail and allows him to get very well with his stepmother and stepsister. His relationship with his father is rather a mysterious one since they share a secret that nobody else knows about.

He has a thing for his stepsister though Maisy only sees him only as a brother and is trying to break up her relationship with Frank Jnr.

His relationship with his stepmother has changed recently after he had managed to seduce her.

Hi, people. I'm very happy to be working with you all on this story. I should've posted this some time ago, but I've been ill for the last 3 weeks or so. I couldn't even sit at a computer for a while there. But I'm ok now and back in the game, so here is my character profile, copied & pasted from the original story:

Elizabeth Moore. Nicknamed “Bette.” Toni's mother, a striking and oversexed woman in her mid 40s. She was devastated when Frank Sr. died of a heart attack last August, but almost a year has gone by now and she is returning to a normal state of scandalous behavior. 3 kids: Toni (23), Frank Jr. (18), and Davy (age unspecified, but a teen, younger than Frank Jr.).

Bette is 5’7”, curvy, voluptuous figure, long legs, wavy, shoulder-length dark brown hair, brown eyes, very fair-skinned, full, pouty lips. Mid 40s, but is coy about her exact age. She believes that an older woman can be every bit as attractive as a younger one, and she always dresses and makes up her face to her best advantage. Flirty, likes to tease and have a good time. Although she will never admit to it, she is a little jealous of the attention her daughter Toni receives from men. Still, she loves her kids and would do anything for them. Frank Sr. has left her pretty well provided for, but she likes to keep busy by doing volunteer work around the town.

She loved Frank, but there was always something missing in their relationship. She longed for passion and excitement, and Frank was a little too dull and reliable, even though he was a good husband. Eventually she filled that void with a series of discreet affairs. Having affairs makes her feel young and desirable. She has a voracious sexual appetite, and has been known to tire out her lovers. She has a lot of friends, but only feels really close to a few people. Her sexual exploits have alienated some of the women in town, and for this reason she finds it difficult to form close friendships with women. However, she is a good person to have as a friend because she understands the value of keeping a secret.

Rumor has it that Bette is involved with Edgar Carmody, who is 15 years her senior. Back when she was crowned Miss Hull County of 1915 and John had been one of the judges they'd had a short but passionate affair. He was her first lover, and she'd briefly entertained thoughts of marrying him. But soon she realized that Carmody was not the marrying kind and she'd become engaged to Frank Moore. However, she's never stopped loving him, and recently they've become intimate again.

He is the Science Teacher at Dewey High School. He has been teaching at the High School since 1930. He has a touch of grey around his temples and is 41. He lives alone on East Bay Road. He is seen fishing frequently at the fishing pier. He regularly visits the Tradewinds for a pintand always eats at the Diner.

Both are blonde beauties in the all-American sense of the word. With their blonde hair, blue eyes and sun-kissed creamy complexions, their smiles are bright and easy and they are both well liked and respected in the community.

Marie, the mother, looks young to have a daughter Maisy's age. She is sweet natured, much like her daughter and did indeed marry young. Her husband Edward Taylor is an engineer and his expertise is in high demand now as the war progresses. The army is constantly keeping him away from home for long periods at a time. Marie is not used to being alone and feels his absence keenly. It is perhaps because of this more than anything that she was so easily seduced by her stepson Deak recently. Now, however, she is racked with guilt from that single encounter.

Maisy Taylor, prom queen, head cheerleader and dating Frankie Moore. They've been dating pretty much all through high school. Although most would envy her, she is genuinely sweet and quite smart. Her grade average in the low A's and high B's. She has simple dreams of settling down some day with Frankie whom she adores and believes she loves deeply. With the war calling Frankie away she is experiencing a hint of what adult-life can mean. Not everything will be as she had hoped and dreamed it would be. She is vaguely considering furthering her studies, something she never seriously thought about before. The recent addition to the household, of her father's son from a previous marriage, is looked upon with delight. A lonely only child, she instantly takes to having an older brother to look up to.
