Mars was colonized long ago, Venus is being terra formed, moons of gas giants have small colony's of people, with each of these events sparks were made and wars were fought. With each war came new peace, a stronger peace then before. The world has formed two sides, two confederations, and now a new spark has formed. A spark that wouldn't launch another small war. A spark to launch the third great war.

China was the first to Mars and America was the second, this small event symbolized a change. Communism began to rise one more. Fearing the second great war of human history would rise again from the ashes, no side risked a fight. Time moved on and the phoenix of battle lay dormant in it's ashes, waiting to return.

Alliances were formed, treaties struck, and power gained, never in the name of war but always in the name of peace. Two glorious empires were formed one based on china and one based on America. Then Deccan Joleen Smith was shot. The spark was made and fell into the ashes of a dead war.

I think you get the idea from above. This is world war 3, and it is between capitalists and communists each with about 1/3 of the power of earth there other third is "neutral."

It will likely be organized in campaigns starting on mars. This campaign will be the first stage of the war as the Deccan was on mars before she was killed.

The Deccan is probably nebulous in the above Post so let me clear it a bit. Joleen is a leader in a neutral country of mars, both sides think the other is responsible for killing her in some scheme to blame the other. Who killed her and why is one of those things likely to be lost in history.

Small battles on Mars have been happening but most of both forces is based on earth or orbiting it. These forces have been dispatched to put down the fighting on Mars, in a way favorable to their owning confederation.

Technology is a concern and will be addressed a bit later. The concept of this thread is a large scale war. Many NPC's will be involved, and multiple PC's will be allowed but preferably not at the start; I would like to focus one one character first so we can better focus on strategy, tactics, and how to write them.

I am in the need of some one who can create and control many NPC's effectively. This person will be the top commander for one side and I will do the other. They more or less act as a second GM that way I don't have to focus and controlling two armies.

The sides are Union of The Populous (UP), the communists, and Defensive Confederation for Peace (DCP), the capitalists.

Ranks:
The second GM called Supreme Admiral General or more often simply General is raked 1. Since both sides have different names for various positions you can more or less work down from there calling them what you want, but in parenthesis please place the rank. Example: Admiral General also called general (2), keep in mind while there is only 1 ranked one person there are at least 3 ranked twos and then each has even more ranked threes, and so on. That is how officers work, please rank from 1 to 10.

next we have enlisted men. If you want to be a character with no one under his command or some one with 3 to 12 people I recommend this. Ranks go from 1 to 5, 5 being the lowest and 1 being highest. Behind the rank you would like place an e. Example: private (5e)

If you don't have a specific rank in mind simply put a range of ranks you'd like to be in.

Technology:

This is getting long so I'll keep this short.

Vehicles: Tanks, wheeled, hover, walker (Legs), amphibious, helicopter, and jet propelled all come to mind and are acceptable. Please post a concept here as you make them. Based on cost you may be asked to change some details or how common the vehicle is for example only special forces use them. (The bellow greatly effect this.)

Armor: Three basic types. Metal durable and mid cost. Laminate is ceramic and metal very durable and more effective against heat based attacks, very expensive. Ablative a durable plastic and composite blend engineered to abelate or chip away with force, cheap light weight and effective even against strong attacks but even small arms fire such as non armor piercing bullets from a hand gun can slowly chip away the armor, often used as a second layer on top of one of the other types. Abelate is assumed to be fire proofed but if your on a budget may not be.

Weapons: A few basic types, beams like lasers, mass drivers or rail guns, plasma cannons, (Not necessarily plasma but can melt away armor,) particle weapons (if charged particles are used they may cause extra damage when they penetrate the armor.) Missiles and more conventional ballistics are also around. No nukes please.

Close range: Exo suites are likely to have some sort of close range weapon. Vibro blades are effective, plasma fausts are good for close range. Limpet mines are extremely effective if not reusable, electro shock weapons are great for use on infantry you want alive, or with enough voltage dead.

Nanotech: This has been developed and has done wonders for other fields. It doesn't make things dirt cheap and can not be used as a weapon how ever.

Bio-tech: use of nanotech as made this a very real field. Enhance reflexes, breath under water using gills, claws, night vision etc. are all possible but generally to expensive for the government to provide to large groups (Keep in mind we are talking millions.) Adding limbs like an extra set of arms is incredible expensive requiring the extra arms, reforming the rub cage, reforming the muscle structure, and even normal rerouteing. It is possible for an individual to have but a size able force can not have it. Living in space an extra limb is very useful so prehensile tails are common among those living in space.

Cybernetics: Bio-tech became possible an a large basis with nano tech, cybernetics were some what common before hand and even easier to do now. Enhanced reflexes, strengthening bones with metal, armor, neural links (Huge advantage), and in some case weapons are all possible and more accessible then bio-tech.

Robotics: AI is advanced but still doesn't think. Robots must be given clear orders to work properly and while powerful and to expensive and not as effective as people in combat. They are common for high risk missions.

Sorry about the length and I hope you enjoy.

Character

OOC:

Name: Arik Freghum

Age: 29

Physical Description: Arik stands at the height of 5 feet 7 inches, quite short for a 29 year old male. His raven colored hair, speckled with highlights of the deepest blue, hangs down to the middle of his back. He normally wears his hair in a pony tail, tied by a crimson ribbon that he sometimes braids into his hair. His alluring sapphire eyes seem to look into your soul, or so some people say. He never recognizes comments like that for he is in an emotionless shell most of the time. He weighs around 147 lbs, not overtly skinny, but lithe, with a slight muscular stature.

Slight Biography: When Arik was 17 he decided to finally graduate instead of staying in high school. After recieving his high school diploma he joined the DCP Marines. His fellow trainees, even his Commanding Officers, realized the potential he had and submitted him to an expierament for a new "Super Soldier." So, at the age of 22, Arik was brought to a testing facility somewhere in space, that worked for the United States Government. To try to make this "Super Soldier" the scientists sought out the DNA of certain animals to find the strong and weak points of the animals, while also computing the combining of nano-bots and animal-like appendages.

The scientists found no bad results in this so they decided to test it on Arik. This is where it went bad. While the nano-bots worked in coordination with the animal and its appendages, they tried to take over Ariks neuralogical system. Instead of creating a human-flesh "Super Soldier", they created an extremely volatile, rage loving, macabe killer. The wings that were grafted onto Arik became almost all cybernetic, consisting of metal feathers and the likes. His bones were reinforced by the nano-bot technology and so were some of his reflexes. His eyesight increased to that of 80/20 vision, enabling him to see things at great distances. His speed was increased beyond that of a normal human, but still low enough for him to be able to hide it...at times. Because he already thought of himself as a freak after this happened he escaped from the facility, went back to Earth and seemingly disappeared.

Unbeknownst to the U.S. Government, Arik was right under their noses in Washington, D.C. He went to an illegal body-grafter and, shall we say, persuaded the gentleman to graft bone-like spikes coming out of his shoulders and forearms, with a retractable bone-like knife that could come out of his right wrist. Now, because of the emotional turmoil Arik went through, he, of course, wanted revenge. But since the body-grafter was a prick and didnt seal the cuts and grafts all of the way, Arik was stuck with a bone-knife sticking out of his right wrist, and he had to watch for his immune system to heal his surgical "wounds."

After a couple months of this waiting period, Arik got impatient and left for space again. Except this time, he snuck away on the Mars colony for the U.S. Since then, he has been hiding his "appendages" and trying to make a living....until he heard that a war was starting. When he found out this little bit of information, he stole supplies, an enviro-suit, instant shelter materials, and made his own little house on Mars. He has set his home up to look like that of one of the new "dirt farmers" that have become so popular on Mars, but in reality, he has been making contacts so that he can hire himself out as a mercenary.
~~~~~
I hope that is sufficent and not too long. I really hope that this RP will get more sign-ups because it is very detailed, and could be a possible twist in our future.
Remembrance, that character doesn't fit in with the theme. Mercenaries are quite possible. If you remake your character, you can play one or more likely form a group, no matter who the individual is they aren't likely to hired as an individual, unless there is wet work to be done. So you stand a better chance saying some sort of group took him in as a member.
Your character has an incredible mix of bio-tech and cybernetics and probably a price tag of battle ship attached to that project. So this character simply doesn't fit in. I would like to have you as player but you need to remake your character.
This time limit the number of things you add. Any two or three things would likely be fine. Accept for the wings which would be useless in an atmosphere unless you had a 30 to 40 ft wing span. If you would like flight I recommend a cybernetic solution, which is more plausible.
Modified tech note:
Also I am modifying what I first said about nano tech. They can be used as a weapon but they have a limited power supply which burns out after about 24 hours. This sufficiently decreases its power to a manageable level.
Name : Michael Bains
Age : 43
Description : 6'1" 200lbs, Dark Hair, brown eyes, Pale skin from being in space under artificial lights too long.
Rank : Commodore*
Affiliation : United States Naval Forces, Space Command
Current Position : Commanding Officer, 497th Light Cruiser squadron, attached to Battle Squadron 37, 3rd Fleet. Mars Sector.
Decorations : 2 Bronze Stars(classified), 1 Silver star(classified), 1 Navy Cross, 1 Purple Heart
Navy Cross Citation : For Close Combat with a superior enemy force of 3 Pirate ships, each the equivalent of a destroyer in firepower, using the USNS Sprite's superior maneuverability and electronics to save a colony, drive off and destroy 2 of the 3 ships in combat, and leading the capture by boarding and close combat the 3rd warship , LT Bains is awarded this honor.
(Awarded Purple Heart at this time for wounds sustained in boarding action. (got shot, doctor fixed him up...))
Bronze Star and Silver Star citations are classified and decorations are not worn on uniform.
Commodore Bains has had a long career in the Navy, and has made it his life's work.
Briefly married just out of the naval academy, his wife of 3 years was killed in action by pirates when her frigate attempted to drive off slave traders from attacking a resettlement convoy bound to Mars.
Since then, having no family back on earth, and kids, he has thrown himself into his assignments and made flag rank at 42 yrs old after approximately 20 years in service.
Starting his career as a tactical officer on a light cruiser, he worked his way up the ranks, soon becoming the commander of a Frigate (USNS Sprite) as of a Senior LT, were he earned his Navy Cross in stopping an attack on a colony orbiting Jupiter.
After that battle and promotion to commander, he became the executive officer on a battleship for a number of years as a commander, commanded a destroyer, then a light cruiser. During this time he participated in a number of engagements and covert operations which earned him 2 bronze stars and 1 Silver Star.
Upon promotion to Captain he spent time as a staff officer in the Naval War Institute, and served as an aid to the General Staff of the United States Space Navy. During this time he became one of the main advocates of detached unit attics and commerce warfare.
Detached unit tactics and commerce warfare is an idea in which a lighter force on its own detached from a main fleet operates in an enemy's rear area with general orders to destroy supplies, convoys, raid and grab for equipment to hand over to intelligence and remove pin down heavier enemy units by forcing them to chase them in the enemy's rear area, thus making these heavier battle units unavailable to the front line forces, effectively taking them out of action.
A ship not at a battle may as well be destroyed, as well as a ship without food, fuel, missiles, spare parts and replacement crew is useless.
The trick in choosing forces for this kind of operation is to have a force small enough that its not a drain on your own fleet, but large enough to be effective, and heavy enough to merit chasing down with forces diverted from the enemy's main fleet, while being light enough to escape the forces chasing you without letting them catch you.
His current assignment, his first as a Commodore, is commanding the 497 Light cruiser squadron, 37 Battle squadron, and part of the 3rd fleet in the Mars operational area. He is training this force in detached unit tactics, however he does not consider the forces at his disposal ideal for the job, although they will do fine in a crunch.
(Although it would serve adaquately, he would like more light units as a screen so he can further divide up his squadron into smaller units and cover a larger area, however if necessary, he can act as is.)
Personally, he is a pleasant person to get along with, until he has decided that you are slacking off and not doing your job, then he becomes your worst nightmare of a commanding officer. Gets along well with his crew, although he does not get too friendly with them, as he knows its not his job to bring them all home, but not to spend them uselessly.
He has had sporadic relationships with female officers he has served with, most of these end with the women finding someone who will be their for them, not someone who is a workaholic.
I assume this is the fleet ranking structure as the GM is 1 and the lowest rank is 10.
I eliminated LT Commander, as it does not fit, if it did, it would be before commander and above LT.
(game master's rank as supreme commander being 1)
Fleet Admiral 2
Admiral 3
Vice Admiral 4
Rear Admiral 5
Commodore 6
Captain 7
Commander 8
Lieutenant 9
Ensign 10
Well I didn't expect some one to try and name all the ranks. I see you fallowed a naval set up. Like you pointed out not every rank fits. So people feel free to adjust that as needed.
Rank one for the record I called the supreme commander that isn't it's actual title. The formal title is general or admiral as fitting for the characters back ground. 1 is simply the person of that position that has been selected to lead his confederations forces.
I've offered the second general to some one and am waiting for her reply before choosing a side. (I gave her first pick.) The highest ranked officers 1s and 2s in particular may find them selves removed from the battle field. So any one who feels the will end up with this problem may make a second character to start with.
Also since this is as much a story as a game certain characters may prove important to some one else's plot. These characters may be shot down, injured, and captured as appropriate. Killing should be left to the NPC's maker, but in the interest of realism these character will have there luck run out if a player continually puts them at risk. For example using a poorly maintained air craft with out a working parachute will almost certainly get some one killed. If you don't want to risk that avoid using a character in that manner.
Need a spunky female mech pilot? I'm thinking an Escaflowne type mech more then a Gundam type (eeewww Gundam!).
Probably a Captain with her own squadron under her command.
I like the tail idea too...
mind if i join in?maybe as a pilot of a smaller mech under vix?jus askin^.^(more like maybe 10ft. or so tall mech,for small towns and close quarters maybe?i dunno)
Out of curiosity, Is their faster than light travel in this game?
I assume their is, but that it is in the very early stages, and the distances are limited to its usage. I don't anticipate going warp 9, but something like lightspeed, or mayber 2 or 3 times faster for larger/faster ships (larger and faster not always the same thing...). If their isn't then likely its not going to move very fast in the game, as the solar system is a big place.
Also, is their faster than light comunications? If so, are they tatical comunications for short ranges, say under 5 light minutes, or are they good for real time conversations between different parts on the solar system, jupiter to earth in real time?
Are their shields for the ships? I know about armor for land based things, but as ships would have to be able to protect themselves from debris in space as well as an ocasional nuke lobbed at them from an enemy.
How big would the fleet possibly be for either side? How long have they been in space, and how old are the space navys going to be?
Maybe 100 years in space at aproximately their current levels of technology with about a few hundred ships for the USA, China and the neutrals having somewhat less?
I'm a space geek at heart.
Vixandra
Escaflone is a good series, but your going to want some range power as well. The very cool liquid metal claws of the Zaiboc empires machines will not be available, not that they have impressive range.
A prehensile tail is remotely cheap bio enhancement so you can easily have it. Your more then welcome.
EA
This set up is loosely based on a book series I was told about. This book was based on historian predictions on what the future is likely to appear as. I have greatly skewed it as is but on of the key concepts is that china will likely take over the USA in terms of progress. More man power and more or less equal technology. So the UP will have just as many ships and possibly a slight advantage in numbers of the DPS. Technology is likely to balance this out.
Faster than light travel is not possible yet. The trip between earth and mars takes several days. This can be compared to an air craft carrier being set from the USA to Europe. The commander has to be willing to commit a number of forces and deal with the trouble if it wasn't enough.
Communication becomes tricky it travels at the speed of light still. This mean you can send messages from mars to earth and it will only take minutes. So communication takes less then an hour but conversations don't really happen. If this is to cumbersome, I may break the laws of nature and allow faster then light travel using booster stations. So a ship would have to be in orbit around a planet to take advantage of it. On the battle field communication is instant much the way it is now.
Shields are some what around. The type used here is seldom placed on small vehicles but it is possible to do so. They operate on magnetic fields. Charge particles and most metallic projectile are more likely to miss. Charged particles travel at high speeds and fire many particles so they operate more or less dealing 70% damage or less if it was a bad shot.
The space forces have been around in one form or another for at least 150 years.
General
The changed after the first colony on the moon was formed. So time is based on that. It is approximately 150 S.B. or space bound time.
The war has just started and despite people having nukes all this time, and these weapons have increased in power, there has only been a few incidents of there use. Typically one side had them and the other didn't. People are still afraid of the damage possible during a nuclear war. So nuke will not appear any time near the start, unless the swiss decide to destroy both sides.
Thanks, that answers a lot of my questions, but i have a few more.
How many ships are we talking per side in their fleets?
Are their a lot of private ships floating around from merchant lines, cargo haulers and things of that nature or is space travle limited to governments?
About 200-300 large ships each. Smaller ships are more numerous, something the size of a fighter would be in the 1000s.
Comercil ships are around and quite common. Mars is close to rivaling earth in numbers, Venus has a population higher then most continets. Many moons outside the astriod belt have colonies, you just can't ignore this market.
I have a question; Are there also fighter planes, like jets or star fighters? If so, I would like to be a pilot with a small command, maybe of an elite fighter squadron.
Those are most definitly present. I can not picture a future with out those.
In particular they fill an important role of being able to fight in space or on a planet. Some Mecha can work in space but normly need a transport to get there. These mecha are also slower in then a fighter.
ok ill try a character and u guys can tell em what you think,alright?^.^*cracks fingers and gets to typin'
Name:Ivellias Lei'Lander
Rank:Lieutenant(if im under Vix?dunno whatever she would like)
vehicle: Loki class mech,stands about a dozen feet high single person cockpit-top speed:42mph
armament:
dual heavy machine guns,firing roughly 3" diameter shells,located on either side of cockpit,180degrees firing circle
Light rocket pack(21-24 rockets)nonguided(located on right arm)
dual light autocannons(beam weaponry not ballistic)located on the side of each arm
Heavy Cannon-(3-shots) cannon mounted along the mech's broad back,customly placed,able to pierce heavy armor and do damage,though it falls pray to a Very Slow firing rate and poor aim due to the recoil.3-shots
story:Ivellias is a large man of around 6'4",and can be as calm as stone when it is needed,but underneath this lurks an undeveloped,reigned back rage,an incredible nearly unquenchable blood-lust clawing at his mind for escape.
Oh yes and can't forget special trademark differences from any other mech pilot^.^: prostetic right ankle and foot,which he lost when the cockpit was crushed in a skirmish,also he is accompanied by two small flying robot thingies named A-01A and A-02A,which serve as scouts and radar posts for his mech,they are armed with a single shot gun mounted into their body,it has the power of about a normal standard hand-gun.
Like I said, I'm interested. I'd like to run dual characters(very different ranks) but if not, that's ok. I'll post them both anyway:D
# 1
Name: John Klor
Rank: Master Sergeant(1e)
Affiliation: DCP
Branch of Armed Forces: Special Operations- AWT
Preferred Weapons: 9mm energy pistol, railgun, 7.62mm Assault Rifle, 4mm Gauss submachine-gun, 12" energy knife, hands
Height: 5'10"
Eyes: Blue
Hair: Blonde
Story: Born and bred on Earth, John proudly continued the Klor tradition and went into the Marines for a career. Once inside, he was one of those weeded from the many and selected for Special Operations. Of those, he was chosen to be a part of AWT, a new division created especially for the elite. Once he joined, he entered a strict regimen of practice with his future squad. The 15 members of AWT were chosen to have their human potential "supplemented" by technology. To put it simply, they became cyborgs. Their skeletons were reinforced with steel, neural uplinks were inserted into them. Their relfexes were enhanced. A new type of body-armor was provided them. 5 died in the process and the AWT became 10. Of course, the project was top secret, sp their families were told those members died in battle. Ever since then, John has faithfully served the DCP as one of its elite. Never too shy to lead his squad into any situation, he has recruited his team to lead the assault.
#2
Name: Fyodr Zrantovich
Rank: Grand Captain(2)
Affiliation: UP
Branch of Armed Forces: Space Fleet
Weapon: 9mm energy pistol, bodyguards
Height: 6'0"
Eyes: Black
Hair: Black
Story: The son of one of the oligarchs within the UP, he was raised for perfection. He grew up fascinated by the military and at the age of eighteen ran away from home and enlisted in the fleet academy. He graduated top of his class and went into the service immediately. He went through the ranks quickly, until he was soon christened Capitan and given his own ship and his own group of fighters. He impressed his superiors with his skill and intelligence and was awarded with command of a carrier group. Impatient with the current peace, he has been dispatched to Mars.
Sorry I'm late. Lots of people interested, very good sign. Cats, this looks very well thought out, should be cool.
_______________________________________
Guo Wen Shi (male)
UP Supreme Admiral (1)
Admiral Wen is 110 years old, but thanks to life-extending nano / bio tech, he looks about 50. Cybernetic implants in the back of his skull connect him directly into the UP computer network, allowing him to monitor battles and commnd his forces from his command base in Old China, on Earth.
Wen comes from a military family, and worked his way up the ranks in small battles on Earth and Mars, and in skirmishes with space pirates and the short-lived Titan rebellion. He was only promoted to Supreme Admiral when the Deccan was killed. The Chairman of the UP knew that this war would require someone of Wen's ruthlessness and tactical brilliance.
Wen favors the use of AIs whenever possible, and employed covert hacker squads to disable the rebel networks on Titan before moving his fleet in. Most of his high ranking officers are also wired into the UP network.
_______________________________________
Hope that's cool, Cats, what more do you need from me right away? And is anyone else on the UP side? I'll come up with some rank 2 and 3 types, but I'd rather have PCs in those positions if anyone's interested.
Nice to meet you, Captain Zrantovich.
Be seeing you in space...well, at least on my fire control board...
Swamp you might want to choose a location closer to the battle field of mars. On the surface or a ship works well. That or we would need to add the booster to communication to make it instant. Or you would have to deal with lag.
Okay Dt you need to pick a side.
Morgoth there four characters besides yours, including mine below, so I'm going to let you have two. I also liked how your were on separate sides. So far we have thee for DCP and two for the UP and the rest are unconfirmed.
Hopefully we will have all fronts covered. We certainly have orbital covered for both sides. We also have a ground team on the DCP side and My chara comes from a mecha back ground.
Name: Charles Willow
Rank: six star general (1)
Side: DCP
Weapons: Anything he knows how to work and light semi automatic pistols. (Most likely will not fight.)
Height: 5'11"
Weight: 170
Eyes: Brown
Hair: missing in action
Age: 78
Short Bio: Charles joined the military at a young age 18. He became married at 20 and do to the constant nagging of his wife became an officer the fallowing year. He did mediocre at the military academy. He was placed in charge of a mecha division shortly after becoming a captain, back when the mecha was infantry support rather then it's own force. From there he slowly worked his way up receiving better remarks and recognition from his actual battles then from his school career.
Generic beliefs: Battles are won and lost on the ground, that is what we are fighting for. How ever air and space are important for holding that ground, orbital strikes are among the most efficient form of attack and can be used to turn the tide in any battle.
Excellent. Thanks, Cats. I can start writing whenever you post the IC thread.
I think I'll just be an infantry person. Someone very small and low in responsibility, who can work his way up to supreme commanding officer, or whatever.
Why is it called World War 3? Wouldn't this technically be called Solar System War 1? Just putting it out there.
Farren.
22.
Short cropped brown hair. Light green eyes, stands at 6'3". A strong build, but not very muscular.
Private in a ground infantry unit (5e) for the Union of the Populus.
I think 5e, I only read through it once, so not quite sure.
Farren is a regular human. He was born and raised on Mars, growing up and learning his father's business. It's nothing great, just water refinement. He can squeeze water from a solid rock if given the right equipment.
When war was on the brink, he signed up. He wasn't given much in training. They showed him how to use the weapons, put him through a few weeks of grueling training, and now he is thrown into the mix.
He has been given neuro implants, nothing big, but they act as a laser sight for any weapon he picks up (that is designed for neuro networking). The result is having each weapon get a 400X powerful scope with using nothing more than his eyes.
He can only use this with the weapons that have that technology though.
As an arsenal, he has standard fighting weaponry. A vibro blade (I assume something like a light saber) a standard M4A1 rifle, and a plasma charger. I'll give him more as he grows up in the ranks.
Armor is standard metal with non fire proof abaletive coating. Helmet, of course, and other common armor type stuff.
Farren was also given a robot. A little guide to help him, one of the rejects in the more advanced properties. It keeps him from getting killed, is his friend, pressing stupid buttons, stuff like that. It has extensive maps about Mars, and lots and lots of protocals. Like his own field computer at his side, as well as a fighting companion. (I would almost call it a second character).
Farren has no experience fighting, so, this will all be new to him.
I've been busy. You have no idea how long it takes to train ants to do your bidding! Ha ha ha!
I am glad to see you too. Looks like we've got some problems on our hands with this.
(Yosemite Sam voice) Of course you realize, this means war!
