Okay, the plot of this one is a little complicated, given that it exists in more than one time frame. No, not time travel, but something very different and very like it together. The story will take place in more than one time, meaning in the past AND in the present, on at least two levels of time. The setting, the house, is a kind of...window, and door, though no one can travel through time, there is a plane that the house exists on, as part of a curse, where the house exists in all times at once. What this means is this. Something happening one-hundred years ago in the house would be happening at the same time as the present, but on a different dimensional level. This means that, while the two times donot overlap so to speak, things can be sort of...blended(?), as in, a person standing in the kitchen in the past while another stands there in the present, may appear to the person in the present as a sort of spectre or ghost, though in the past, this person is really just standing there. The two times would have no real communication, meaning they can't attempt to speak to each other at all, and don't know what's wrong with the house, but odd happens, like the appearance in the kitchen mentioned above, can occur. Also, this time dimensional plane situation would mean this: Should something occur in the house, it affects all times from that time on, but not until it happens. Case in point: a table sits in the aforementioned kitchen, flawless, for one-hundred years, but suddenly, someone in the past trips and scratches the table with an object carried in his/her hand, accidentally. The scratch would suddenly appear in the present, just as the act happens in the past (time overlapping, so to speak), instead of having always been there, as would happen in reality. Because of the curse that plagues the house, it is always affected this way.
Hopefully this is helpful in understanding what I'm trying to do here. The plot beyond this point would be this: (Roughly)

A currently undetermined number of people, all having suffered similar experiences but having never met one another, find themselves in the same town (to be named later) and find their ways into this house. They are "chosen" by the house, before their birth, and all share a birthmark, identical but in different places on their bodies, though why they are chosen isn't clear (just yet). As they spend time in this house, they become oddly attached to it and accustomed. This doesn't last long, as they begin to forget everything about their past (much of which they cannot remember anyway; one of those similar experiences I was talking about), including their families and friends and whatnot, everything important. When they attempt to leave, they walk right out the door, but the world they wander into is only partly thiers, as the house's curse follows them, and no matter what they do, they always return to the house, as no matter how far they travel, or who they ask for help, they always fall asleep eventually (or lose consciousness) and awake again in the house, their efforts in vain.
This is just the foundation (and I think I'll have a pretty good idea of what causes the curse), but we can go everywhere with this within a certain ghosts and spectres and haunted house/world genre. The house would be destined to destroy them, but not so powerful to just collapse of something like that, and it would be alive in a sense, where it can learn from the mistakes it has make, and repair its own weaknesses, therefore, a trick that helps the characters out of a rough situation once may not work ever again.
The basic concept here is the pure horror, while avoidig the vampires and werewolves that are too common (though still interesting) in such films and stories. It would be ghosts, mind-tricks and things of that sort. The posts would have to almost be surreal, given the foundation above, and the characters would all have to be introduced near the beginning of the thread, as each would be in some way integral to the plot and the curse. Bios would have to be vague, given the lapses in memory and other attributes (we'll figure those out later).
Anyone interested?

Options?

Cool, its an awsome thread idea, but may I make a suggestion. I've had experience with threads like this in the past, where people are brought to the house, and it usually fizzles.

What I suggest is that the house was once owned by prosperous people (not sure how your curse works, but fit the past into it) then in the present, the house is used like a half-way home for runaway teens (age is limited, i know, but something along those ideas) or another family moves in, or a bunch of friends going there on a dare, having to sleep in the house for so many days etc...

:)

To me, just makes the story flow alittle better. The tattoo idea is actually pretty interesting. Maybe have just 2 people with the same tattoo... they could be friends or just met. ou wait! just thought of something, have like a group of friends staying there ona dare and have another group there to investigate the weird things (ie ghosts..etc) in the house, and one from each group has the tattoo and somehow they are a part of the house, drawn back to it. each group can have like 3-4 people in it...

oh.. im sorry!! Im like taking over your story!! eesh! you dont have to listen to me! but either way, I would like to join.

Hmm... interesting ideas, both of you, and I would like to join.
If you are planning to go along with what Lady Violet said, I think you should try to steer away from the "dare" thing, it's a bit cliche. But that's just my opinion, take it or leave it.
Oh, and I like the two groups thing.
I'm not trying to take over or anything, just expressing my opinion, but any way it goes I'll be a part of this.

Can I play too?

Brilliant story line, Quiet Cool. I'd love to join if you'd have me.

After reading your post, I keep thinking of the movie Legacy. An old suspense/horror flick I haven't thought of in years. Anyhoo, I'm rambling.

I'll ponder a bit and pose a character later. Again, a very intriguing concept. Mind is all a'flutter with ideas.

Very original concept. I would like to join if it's not too late already

Nice to see interest already...

Okay, for the record, all ideas are going to be considered, so don't hold back. So long as we all go into this with the same plotline and understanding, that's all that matters.
In terms of who can join...let's start a roster, no rejections.
In terms of the halfway house for runaway teens, Etc. idea, I wanted characters that were bound to the house in a way that would give us both limitations and boundaries, meaning, a character can't just say "Hey, here's this book by so-and-so, I wonder if he knows what's going on?" then run off on a four day trip to Chicago and learn whatever about whatever. IF that happens, the story takes too much form, meaning it becomes too logical in the sense that individual sights and feelings would have to be defined in their meaning. That's too logical in my opinion, although I will listen to any suggestions on this. A thread like this should be based more on the basic emotions, fear, anger, excitement, confusion, etc. Not on logical reasoning, at least not in its essence. If all the characters are bound to the house, the curse would follow the character, preventing them from doing so, and it would return them to the house as soon as they fell asleep. The same thing with the sketchy memories, that they would seem to lack characterization at the beginning, and the house might manipulate their thoughts and memories.
If you think this is too much, and I have a habit of throwing out at least a little too much, then let me know. The plot can be as group oriented as the thread will be.

Count me in, too.

Dude, I am there.

The setting you described, as to how the house functions in the time fluctuation thing reminds me of Michael Chrichton's "Timeline", wherein people didn't so much travel through time as they travelled through overlapping dimensions.

Count me in. Perhaps I could play a scientist, or at least a person with some scientific background, trying to figure this thing out?

Ok Cool, i see your point now! :)

it makes sense about not being able to leave the house etc.

I was wondering if my character could be knowlegable in modern witchcraft). let me know if that would work!

First off, they can leave the house, and travel until they fall asleep, then they awaken in the house again. And, while they can leave, because they are connected to the house on a "fateful" or "spiritual" level, not sure which terms best suits it, the house can manipulate the reality they encounter outside as well, the same as within. This is why they are all drawn to the house in the beginning.
In terms of the character and witchcraft, as long as the character cannot use magic to figure things out, at least not on a large scale. Possibly using a spell that temporarily makes her aware of certain things but cannot show her even a glimpse of the "big picture." In terms of basic religious characterization, do whatever, so long as religion doesn't become an excuse for an overabundance of insight.
I guess what I mean, and I'm saying this for newer players moe than you, cuz I'm certain you won't do this accidentally or otherwise, don't let the character's knowledge sabotage the plot.
As far as the scientist theory, Amenra, I wanted all the characters involved to be a part of it, not outside of it looking in, as this character would be. Again, he'd be the focal point in terms of insight into the curse, which is something that shold be developed by those inside the house, whose lives have been in some way led by the house and its curse.
What I mean is, the characters who define the plotline, given the house's powers, are all under certain control, or manipulation might be a better word. The house is part of thier existance, capable of manipulating their minds in many ways that they cannot control, but also leaving itself weak to them because of this connection.
I figured, during the course of the thread, I'd come up with the curse and PM whoever when the time came for more insight ot be revealed, letting them know what to say thier character knows or sees, in terms of the origin of the curse only. As far as the house's manipulations, write what you want. Mind games can be meaningless, and so make whatever you want happen. However, the house, using whatever methods, can kill them, but not without affecting itself, due to that connection.
Let me know if I'm making this too far out...
Like I said, I'm aiming for the surreal, dealing with visceral fear and whatnot. Pure emotion and intensity, forsaking mostly the logical. In this sense, characters that aren't tied to the house as such, may make more than one appearance, each taking on its own life, meaning the character may or may not have any kowldge of its prior actions or attitudes.

What happens if someone watches the person fall asleep and they get transported?

Do they forget seeing the person for that day?

A little detail probably, but just curious :)

It is a neat idea.

Oh, okay, I am with you. Thanks for explaining it a little more.

Cool, I assume you will be starting the thread?

Let me know if my character fits in. Her "powers" is actually mostly knowledge of the craft, spells/potions for simple things, like love, sickness, herbs for cooking.

Name: Olivia Dale
Age: 28
Bio: Dark Auburn hair, shoulder length. Blue eyes with specs of green. Slender, tanned, 5'9", approx. 135lbs.
History: Grew up in a small town. Raised by her grand-mother who was considered the local practionner . She learned herbal magic and ritual spells.

not sure what else to say about her until i know how she is connected to the house!

Okay, I want at least four characters before we start, all connected to the house, as it may be hard to add in new characters after, say, the first page, given the odd nature of the thread. As far as how they're connected to the house, they don't even know, not yet, not until the curse is exposed, if we make it that far, and often threads like this fail on arrival.m That's why I wanted their memories sketchy, since the house would be able to hide ther own experiences from them to a certain extent. We can add those memories and details as we go along.
Why don't we post a few basic profiles, then get started on it?

(oh, and Lady Violet, not that this affects the thread, but modern witchcraft has strict rules about love potions and spells--it manipulates another being, taking away their free will, something modern witches take very seriously)
Just thought I'd mention that...

*just hops in to point out that there are many modern witches who deal with love spells, and even more who deal with things that are obviously dark. You are speaking more about wiccans, and even some of them will perform love spells on occasion.*

(Wiccan and Witch are not interchangable words, and there is no way to singularly define a set of rules for a witch)

Not to make this a debate thread on witchcraft, but...

Basically, pagan religions as a whole answer to the Witch's Rede(An it harm none, Do as ye will), as well as the law of three fold, which specifies that any harm you cause another will be visited back upon you three fold. Most people who cast love spells are either people dabbling in the craft (like those in the movie The Craft) or those who are, like the rest of us, not thinking of the repercussions. Just my viewpoint. I didn't mean to offend if I misrepresented anything in terms of the Wiccan/pagan religions.

Elisabeth "Beth" Roe

22 years old. Born mute, although it rarely inhibits her ability to communicate, as she signs and reads lips especially well. She is a somewhat introverted girl, with a bit of a psychic 'gift'. Nothing dramatic really, she has always just had an overly sensitive sixth sense.

She is a student at a local university, studying botany in the hopes of having her very own nursery one day.

Physically, she's generally attractive, yet not pretentious. She stands 5'6", slender. Dark brown hair falls straight just below her shoulder blades with just a fringe of bangs falling across her forehead. Dark eyes, with just the merest flecks of gold, mirror her every emotion. Although her most pleasing feature would have to be her easy, pleasant smile.

If there's a problem with this character, let me know please. Or if I need to expand on her a bit more, I can do that as well.

Is there still room to join? I was thinking of a kind of drifter type character. Not a bum but a guy about 25 years old that had almost no family and no ties to the family he has. He has a bike and a yearning to see the world. He stops in a town and works when he needs to but doesn't stay anywhere for long.

Don't know if this would work or if you have another place for me. Let me know one way or the other.

How's this for a character:

Harrison Aviar

35

6'2" 160 plds

Dark brown medium lenth hair, green eyes.

Harrison grew up in the town that surrounds the house. He had heard that the people who used to live here were millionares but they were extreamly senile, hiding their money all around the house. Harrison decided he would come to the house in search of the cash.

If this is taking too many liberties with the house, please tell me and I'll scrap the idea.

okay...

PM, the house can bear whatever rumors you want, given that once they're inside, the realities of what's outside aren't an issue. Surreal is the key here.
Forrester...I like...It's exactly the type of character I was looking for.
Trace, do I like her? Hell, I'd date her...but she needs a darker side, not necessarily something evil or negative about her, but possibly something that plagues her, that she doesn't understand, that's been there for as long as she can remember. Just leave her open to exploration in terms of character after they're within the house's "realm."
Okay, my turn (and critique mine too, we're all in this together, if it's gonna work):

Name: Jack Harris
Age: 26
Height: 6'
Weight: 170 lbs.

Raised by his aunt, who was a bit on the accentic side...she almost never left the house, and had contact with only him, the grocery delivery boys (and she'd only answer the door for a few of them), and her friends Delores, who'd stop by to play cards once or twice a week. He rarely ate or talked with her, just went home, did his homework, then went out to play. He would go days sometimes without so much as passing her in the halls of the big, old house. One day was exactly like the next and the one before. Monotonous.
When he was eighteen, just after graduation, he set out on his own, not able to live in the house any longer. His aunt insisted he take a few thousands dollars (she was rich with money she'd inherited from her husband plus his insurance money) for traveling expenses and a decent mode of transportation, then he was off, spending the next eight years treveling, going from place to place and often not even remembering where he's been or how he's gotten there.
That's how he winds up at the house...he wakes up one morning in bed there...
Not tall or short, or heavy or skinny, Jack's your average Joe, though his lifestyle leaves him often unshaven and a bit long in the hair style. Brown hair and blue eyes, and in decent shape, he's nothing special, but nothing to turn your back on either...

Okay bear with me. I'm just going to spout off some things I've brainstormed about Beth. Again, if I presume too much don't hesitate to critique. I'm open to change.

She's not originally from the town where the house is found. She's here for the university with a small, modest apartment on the outskirts of the campus. She's attending college mainly through grants/loans and a modest amount of finanical support from her family, who live a fair distance away, yet comply with Beth's wish for a bit of independence, living on her own while attending an out of state (?) college.

Through the grapevine she's heard stories about the various and somewhat unusual florabunda surrounding the house and goes to sate her curiosity. Seeing as how she's studying botany, she's intrigued. As for why the house itself interests her, I'm thinking that perhaps she has had disturbing, vivid dreams all her life and that when she gets to the house and grounds, they will seem strangely familiar to her as she reconginzes the house and part of the grounds from her dreams, and she feels this overwhelming need to investigate... Again, that may be over the top. Or too cliche.

As for something that plauges her... I don't really want her to be a dark character persay. Overall she's your basic girl-next-door type of persona, but some other more disturbing things could come out in play while she's within the house. I'll ponder on that later of course.

I'm stuck on the idea that she suffers from severe case of claustrophobia (or maybe just being trapped?). Overwhelming at times, yet she really can't explain it. She's been this way as long as she can remember. Would that work, or are you looking for something a bit more ominous?

Thanks Quiet Cool. Here is my character.

Michael Winslow
Age 25
5' 11"
Dusky blonde hair and hazel eyes

Mike has been on his own since he was sixteen. His parents were killed in a car wreck before he was born or at least that was the story he was told while being passed from one family member to another. Finally he got tired of living out of a suitcase and not having the freedom that should come with that and he left. His family didn't even try to look for him.

He works when he has to and one of the very first things he did was to buy a motorcyle which ends up being the only thing he ever gave his affection to. One day he comes into a town where a large house that looked deserted stood. It was raining and he had spent the money he had earned in the last town. Thinking to go into town and look for another job in the morning he did what he had done many times before and entered the house finding it open instead of locked but thinking that it was just good fortune. Picking one of the rooms he falls to sleep almost immediately.

Opinions or needed changes?

I'm afraid that I am going to have to bow out of this one....and I really looked forward to writing with you again, Quiet Cool. However, I did promise someone to finish part 2 of my story, and have graciously accepted an idea for another, which I am soon to start on...so I am left with little time and no creative influx for you.

Surely this will be a good one, and I will check in to read from time to time.

Best wishes,

AmenRa

I've requested for a change of character, so that will be coming...

Also, I am Wiccan! Been so for over 10 years and I'm even married to a Pagan!

So na!

:)
