"Hurry, Hurry, Step right up... How bout you little lady?"

Justin watched the growing crowd with more than just a passing interest, while listening to the call of the carnival pitchman as he hawked his tickets. His voice was not all that different from the others at this years county fair, and yet, it was as though this particular frontman belonged to another place in time...

Paying his .25 cents he wandered through the opening and on large oval in the middle of the expanse was a gameboard...

"My ohhhh my what have we here?" the older woman cooed from her seated position at what was obviously the head of the table. "Come come, we haven’t much time, come closer and let Mamma Jeffries get a good look at you." she said, in a sing-song voice. Justin moved over to where she sat, her long reddish brown hair, seemed tinged with silver, yet she could not be nearly that old...

"Names are not nearly as important in the 'Game' my young friend, as the choices you make, and the actions you take. The rules are simple, but pay attention anyhow, I don't want you coming back saying you didn't understand." Before he could comment, she dismissed his speech with a wave of her hand, then pointing to the board. "The black bag there on the table is filled with small stones, get yourself one out and hand it to me." ...

The Rules are simple. she said. You reach into the bag and pull out a Rune, then you pick a card, (he noticed a tarot deck fanned out face down before her). Once the dice are rolled, all players move to the square which coresponds to the number, and together you must play out the time-period of the square. The rune denotes your charachter strengths and weaknesses, the card your personality traits and the rest is up to you. Care to try your luck?

Something in her eyes said that there was more to this than she was telling, but he knew in order to find out he would have to take a seat and commit himself to the game...

She smiled again her genuine smile as she took in the lad once more as he looked at the board before him and nodded to her with one word, "Agreed." "Good Lad, now take some time to get acquainted with the others if you like, or simply wander a bit and look at the painted walls, they hold many secrets, and many more answers you will need in the game. Shoo now, and let Mamma Jeffries get her self ready for the rest who will come along to join you soon. "...

Love the premise. It should be a great time era hopping. *G

OOC-Bio:

Enrico "Ric" Manetti, 25 years old, 5'10 1/2" tall, swarthy complexion, dark eyes and coal black hair. Clean shaved and dressed in slacks and shirt and a windbreaker.
First generation Italian-American
Father owns a small but profitable import-export company dealing in things like olive oil from the "Old Country" that he wholesales to ethnic grocers and small grocery chains in the NE. Ric speaks fluent Italian since it was a primary language in the home.
He attended college at his father's instance where he lettered in boxing and fencing. Upon graduation Ric joined Mr. Hoover's G-Men, much to his father's and mother's delight.
He's graduated the FBI Academy and is currently working out of a midwest field office investigating bank robberies.
He'd never been to a county or state fair so decided that, since one was setting up close by, to go see what they were like.
He wandered the exhibits, but being basically a city boy didn't have much interest in the livestock, etc so moved on to walk the midway with its various games of chance and amusements like the ferris wheel, etc.
Ric learned to play checkers and graduated to chess at home and in college. He enjoys table top games like cards and various board games, like the new Monoply for instance, so paid his two-bits and entered the tent to find a table and chairs. A woman sat at the head of the table and local lad was sitting in one of the chairs around it.

~~~~
IC:
Ric flashes the woman, obviously the one in charge of the game, one of his brilliant smiles white teeth flashing in his tanned face and listens as she repeats essentially all of the same pitch or explaination she's given Justin.
Again he smiles at her, then at Justin saying to them both, "Sounds as if this could be a lot of fun." and he takes a seat on the opposite side of the table from Justin. He lights a Camel as he waits for her to begin the game according to its simple sounding rules.
Bethany Collins
Bethany, 5' 7", Strawberry-blonde, green eyes, 23 years old.
Bethany was born into a house of a middle income family until they lost everything when her father made a very bad investment. For several years, the family struggled, her father trying to provide for them but making ends meet became overwhelming and he committed suicide, giving up the struggle one night.
Her mother never recovered from the shock and soon fell ill, lingering in her sorrow over her husband's death and the bills that could not be paid. Bethany was forced to go to work straight out of high school, making barely enough to make a meager living for herself and her mother through the various odd jobs she was able to find. She also had the responsibility of caring for the woman who was trying to give up on life.
A year after her father took his life, her mother gave up hers. Bethany mourned them the best she could but still had to make a living for herself and so took classes to become a secretary. She finally got a position, though not an extremely well paying one, as one of many secretaries in a large company. She has a small apartment and works hard to finish paying the debts her parents aquired as well as for the necessities of life.
She seldom goes out and rarely takes time for herself. But, just this once, she decided to treat herself to a night out with some money she had saved up.
__________________
Bethany hurried over to pay her money to get in. She felt a stab of guilt as she handed it over, she had refused herself so much in order to save up a little bit but she was determined to treat herself to something for all the times she had passed the opportunity by.
Being directed into the tent, she pulled up the flap and looked around, her eyes adjusting to the dim light. There were two men and two women around some kind of game table.
Her attention was caught by the older woman coming towards her and, before Bethany could say a word, she had a long explanation of the 'game', had reached in the bag as instructed and handed some kind of stone to the woman, piked a card that she didn't even look at and was seated around it, not even knowing if she wanted to try it.
Looking from one face to the other, she tried to go over the instructions in her head again, the way she did when she got an assignment at work but decided that the best way to learn would be to watch the others and do as they did when it was her turn.
*nods* Was going to ask the same question. I have read of the Tarot but not extremely familiar with it.
DESCRIPTION
In the opening of the film Mission Impossible, a crack team of specialists is working on a dangerous assignment. The members of the team are mapping out a strategy, coordinating resources and drawing on their skills and ingenuity to complete the mission. This is the Three of Pentacles in action: teamwork, planning and competence.
The Three of Pentacles
is one of the cards in the Tarot that focuses on the group. (The Three of Cups and the Hierophant are the others.) As Pentacles are grounded and practical, this card represents a task-oriented team - people who are working cooperatively toward a common goal. There are few jobs that can be accomplished alone. We need the help of others to achieve our goals. Sometimes the Three of Pentacles is a sign that you will be more productive if you work with others. You don't have to do it all by yourself.
This card can also show a need for planning and preparation. Now is not the time to rush into something or begin a project with only a vague idea of what it's about. You need to think everything through, go over all the possibilities and make sure you work out the details. Do your homework, and your undertaking will flourish.
Another feature of the Three of Pentacles is competence - the ability to get the job done. How rare this is nowadays! This card tells you that you have the skills and knowledge you need. You can attract capable people and create a successful environment. Know that the situation is (or will be) in good hands, but be sure to concentrate on excellence in your work. Be proud of what you do and how you do it. Then you will accomplish your "impossible" mission.
Hope that helps... :)
Justin, I checked three sites is this what you have in mind for my card? All I found was the Knight of Wands.
"A young man full of vitality and energy, effusive and generous but possibly cruel, hasty and self absorbed. This card may also foretell a change of residence, a quick departure, or (as with any of the Knights) the sudden coming or going of a matter."
If Reversed: "an interferring force, a lover possessed by jealousy, a creator of conflict, a source of frustration or confusion"
That's what I found at the site with the Knight of Wands card.
Here is the meaning of your card, Sir:
The Knight of Cups
The Lord of the Waves and the Waters; The King of the Hosts of the Sea
Numerical Value: 4
Elemental Name: Fire of Water
Divinatory meaning
He is often constantly bored and in constant need of stimulation, but also artistic and refined. A person who is amiable, intelligent full of high principals, but a dreamer who can be easily led or discouraged.
Ill Dignified or Reversed - Unreliability and recklessness. Fraud, embezzlement, false promises and trickery. A person who is congenital liar, someone who has trouble discerning the end of the truth and the beginning of falsehood.
As for the Rune, Wyn (jo) = Joy.
Not the matronly deep and abiding Love of Gefu (before it) the Gift, but the lively, spark of Joy that accompanies all of life, if you know where to find it.
Also, I was raised on Runic, it was my 1st language, with English following a close second, and 1st spoken. Though I could read, write, interpret, and understand the meaning of the Runic Language, it was not accepted as a part of the Curriculum, nor an accepted form of language used to turn in ones homework even in the 2nd grade. hehe...
Hope that helps;)
How about the runes the rest of us 'chose' Justin?
What ?!? The teacher couldn't read runic? Not very well educated for a teacher was she? *LOL
GBS* Thanks MM, I'll take a look at mine now.
Are you going to join "The Game"? *g
Here's my rune for all to "read".
Perthro: (P: Lot cup, vagina.) Uncertain meaning, a secret matter, a mystery, hidden things and occult abilities. Initiation, knowledge of one's destiny, knowledge of future matters, determining the future or your path. Pertaining to things feminine, feminine mysteries including female fertility, and vagina. Good lot, fellowship and joy. Evolutionary change. Perthro Reversed or Merkstave: Addiction, stagnation, loneliness, malaise.
BS* Thanks again MM.
Peorth - The Dice Cup
Actually, I have a different understanding of the Rune chosen for our "Slueth" which goes something like this...
The Pertho (Peorth) rune relates to the games of chance and skill which warriors used to play with each other to pass the time in hall. It is thus a positive sign when it occurs with respect to relationships, suggesting support, comfort, amusement and fulfillment.
Hence it would suggest your immediate situation, is currently beneficial to you and enriching your life. However this is also a rune of hidden information and its presence here hints that not all relevant information has yet been revealed.
Interpretation:
This Rune symbolizes hidden mysteries and chance or the game of chance.
Of course this is Ideal in such a case, combined with your current character employment, it lends that extra something to shift the odds of completion in our favor.
Add to all of this ;
Raid ho (Rad) can be a rune of travelling the correct path, of making steady progress towards a destination. It can also however be a rune of new starts. So how do you decide which meaning applies in this case. There are two main methods
Intuition - All rune readings rely on the instincts and abilities of the reader. What "feels" right to you?
Procedural - Look at the question asked. In this case it is very much fixed on what action the querent should take. This would suggest an active rather than a passive response is required which would tend to favor the new starts possibility.
This rune offers the prospect of continued growth and development with regard to your employment and employment prospects. It suggests there is an opportunity for steady promotion in good time and at your present job.
However Raid ho (Rad) is a rune of new openings and its presence here suggests you should be open to alternative possibilities. Be willing to explore new and different possibilities, in particular those requiring travel or relocation.
And we see it all coming together quite nicely.
Hope that helps...
:cool:
So do I Justin.. *G*. Time will tell and now I have the two for 'references' as the story unfolds.
Thank you.
ME TOO ME TOO
Character
Meri Sexx
age 37
five foot six, dark brown hair with some grey ones peeking out, oval face, caramel eyes, long eyelashes, very gothic in dress but occultic curious. Ears peirced with fishhooked crosses (Celtic of course) Black lipstick and nails. Soft skin tones that pale due to excessive insomonia.
Hands that are callused and worn a face that has seen many trails. Her past was one of excessive men. Married at 14 then widowed.. married at 17 and desserted.. married at 21, then widowed again.... she waited til she was 30 to marry again only to lose him to a car wreak.. two years later, tried again only to be widowed again. She was ready to give up on marriage when she wandered into the area.
Listening to the barker and then stepping closer. "Sounds like my cup of tea. One please." Setting a five on the table and grinning ear to ear.
A "Merri" Combination
Hagalaz, Harhal (Hail)
Often thought of as one of the more destructive forces of nature, this Rune represents a cleansing force.
A few of the attributes carried with this Rune are:
a cleansing effect, purging, room for growth, acceptance, fortitude, past events, letting go, leaving behind the events of the past.
The High Priestess
The High Priestess is the guardian of the unconscious. She sits in front of the thin veil of unawareness which is all that separates us from our inner landscape. She contains within herself the secrets of these realms and offers us the silent invitation, "Be still and know that I Am."
The High Priestess is the feminine principle that balances the masculine force of the Magician. The feminine archetype in the tarot is split between the High Priestess and the Empress. The High Priestess is the mysterious unknown that women often represent.
The High Priestess poses a challenge to you to go deeper - to look beyond the obvious, surface situation to what is hidden and obscure. She also asks you to recall the vastness of your potential and to remember the unlimited possibilities you hold within yourself. The High Priestess can represent a time of waiting and allowing. It is not always necessary to act to achieve your goals. Sometimes they can be realized through a stillness that gives desire a chance to flower within the fullness of time.
Hope this helps...
The Game is afoot, please red before posting
To the cast of The Turn of a Friendly Card...
The Thread is open
The link will take you to the opening of the game. It is my hope that you all have the opportunity to enjoy the Story as it unfolds.
If you are unfamiliar with the times in which it is written, please take a moment and do a bit of research.
Please keep ALL OOC Posts Out of the Storyline, as well as comments, and other offhanded instructions and directions... If need be we can create another thread for in and out of character dev as well as comments and what not.
Also, Please try to post one well edited post each day rather than 10 or 15 uncombined, reactionary posts... Again, we can create a seprate thread for that if we need to, this way the story can flow well for the reader, and who knows, maybe even become a best selling e-book...
Thank you all who have come to play, and remember...
..."The think it will make their lives easier, but the doorway before them is barred... But the game never ends when your whole world depends on the Turn of a Friendly Card..."
