Its 2004, same world as it is now.

At Cal Tech a very powerful encryption system was under development. If successful, their wouldn't be a single Chinese, Russian or even American comunication system that couldn't be breached.

Needless to say, this is software that the US Government wasn't even going to share with the FBI. Those boys and girls are a bit too...visible for this little toy. Carnivore caused them enough shit looking through email.

This was something that would make all present codes and the theories they opperate on outdated.

Now, the hell of it. A piece of the software is missing. It was on a CD which is encoded so that it cannot be uploaded onto the net or accessed without being on a terminal in Cal Tech or NSA HQ at Fort Mead. (Or so the NSA believes)

The CD missing is #3 of a 60 CD set, all of which are necessary for proper opperation, but even a look at the source code would give insight into how it operated.

With the war on terror, the Chinese and the Russians being...well, the Chinese and Russians, comunication secrecy and secrecy in general is more important than ever.

Foreign governments routinely infiltrate people into American universities which are heavy into R&D, and Cal Tech may be full of spies. Some of the professors may be traitors seduced by sex, blackmail or a dollar figure. Their as students who are anarchists, people who don't feel secrets should be kept secret and information should flow free, and who knows what else.

The Lab was trashed, a professor was killed by a knife in the kidney (Single thrust. Was it luck or training) and his laptop is missing. The laptop doesn't contain the software, but a fragment of the developement notes. It can't run the CD and doesn't have the rest of it.

The other CD's are in a vault at a federal building in LA for safekeeping after this.

Who has the laptop? The CD?

Could be kids looking for things to sell to a dealer. Could be more... The killer could be the victim of a false flag opperation were you think you are working for your own cause, but in reality at the behest of another....

If you want to work for the FBI, you will have resources of your own and the locals, the ability to flash the badge and not have to slink in the shadows. Of course, if you go outside the bounds of the law, your in deep shit with your boss, can loose your support and your job.

If you want to serve your Nation from another point of view, then all the shackels the FBI has are not incumbent on you. However, if you get caught, its going to be worse, and if the feds get ahold of you, well, you should not be opperating in the USA so they are under no obligation to have profesional courtesy toward you.

Foreign agents have an even more difficult task.
You need to avoid the hunters in the light and in the shadows. Your resources are more limited, as you may not have fancy weapons, comunication gear, excessive cash or allies. Only your witts and your mission. You may be British, French, Italian, Isralie, Chinese, Russian, Japanese or anyother nation.

Who can you trust? Is your team loyal? Are your superiors run by the other side?

Is this all a ploy to expose foreign networks and eliminate them with the bait of information?

Welcome to the wilderness of mirrors...

I'm in. Sounds like fun. Here's my character

Name: Irena Nerekova a.k.a Molly Meyers
Age: 25 looks 20

Occupation: Spetznaz Special Forces Soldier

Bio: Irena is a highly trained Russian Foreign Agent. She's been in the service for five years and is fed up with the lousy pay, lack of respect and risking her neck for the bureaucrats in Moscow. She took the mission with every intention to turn rogue and sell the information on the black market. She enrolled in Cal Tech, seduced and murdered the Professor and made off with the CD. She was cutoff from her allies in Russian Intelligence and is now on the run from them and the American Authorities. Her only hope is to somehow find the Laptop. Without it, her Fence won't buy the CD. She has very little disposable cash and only a small basic supply of technical gear. It will be, she knows, a rough road.

Appearance: Back home, Irena is 5'6, 120lbs of fit and firm Special Agent. Black hair and no makeup she usually looks very harsh. For the mission, she's dyed her hair blonde and tried to fit in as the typical American college student. She was pleased to discover that with the makeover she was, apparently, very beautiful and had little trouble with the Professor. She has adopted the persona of Molly Meyers complete with all the neccesary ID. She lives on campus, in a dorm room.

BEL, Hell, think of a few and introduce them over the course of the game.

Stab yourself in the back and surprise the rest of us when your partner from Naval Inteligence turns out to be a dedicated Communist from the cold war days who longs to see the red banner restored over the Soviet Union.

...Or is that what he really wants someone to believe when really he is working for the Marine Inteligence because his General doesn't trust the assholes at CIA, the Navy(especialy the Navy...) the White House or the State Department. (they may be involved too, I duno...)

And is the General really working for the USA's best intrests, or is he going to sell the Technology to the Japs?

Confused yet? Are you looking around and wondering who is your friend and who is just a plant?

Thats the wilderness that spies endure. Now, its it going to be that bad? Who knows.

But you better tripple think things, because you never know...

To everyone else who is reading this and thinking of joining, please think the movie "Spy Games" and "The Recruit" rather than anything James Bond or Tripple X.

That sounds like a very good character, but I'm afraid no one has the laptop yet.

Thats going to come into play once people start to search for it.

If you want the laptop, your going to have to talk to people, seduce someone to get them to loosen their guard around you and talk about an investigation which they shouldn't really discuss with a little thing like you, break into offices and maybe kill someone making it look like a suicide.

Were that piece of the puzzle is, only one of my character's knows, and he isn't telling quite yet.

Your going to have to work for the $$...

Alan Dracul:

Alan was recruited into the CIA from the Army's Special Forces after tours of duty seconding with the Brit's SAS and then Germany's DSG-9.

He worked for the (Director of Operations) D.O. in several covert roles in Europe and Central and South America as he is fluent in Spanish, Portugese, Italian, French and German and can make himself understood in several other Germanic languages.

His record is spotless, each mission a complete success. Those that needed to be eliminated were, information needed was aquired and those needing to vanish did so, with a trace.

In his mid thirties he left the Agency for an agency that doesn't exist on any goverment list and has no apparent government funding, at least none officially.

Now Alan, known, by those in the know, by the code name Ghost, acts as a lone ultra covert operative for an ultra patriotic orginization that doesn't exist and is funded by a patriotic man who's one of the top 20 on Forbe's list of the wealthiest in the world.

Alan has a Concealed Weapons permit from Florida and Utah, one from California and one from New York City thanks to his employer's 'juice'. These make it legal for him to carry concealed in over 30 of the 48 continental states.

Known only to Alan, he's recruited and trained a partner. No one knows about the partner, not name, code name or gender. They are Alan's asset and his alone. The only one they take instructions from and answer to is Alan.

Alan is currently in CA on assignment, as is his asset.

(Edited to tone him down a bit so he fits the story a little more.)

Just explain to me how powerful this agency exactly is?

The part about "he can draw on anything the government has available", Is the gear or influence?

If we are talking something that can get him a lot of gear, cash and very, very ocasionaly pull an FBI agent or LAPD LT out if its ass if it HAS TO bail someone out of a tight spot, but not suddenly start issuing orders to people in FBI counter-intel or actively thwarting them or people in similar posts, then fine.

If its powerful enough to seriously butt heads with the NSA or CIA when they want something done, or slam doors shut to the FBI who is legitimately investigating the issue and has the clearances and court orders to do it, it may be a problem...Unless of course, its really run by those groups, and they are playing it "legit" and "Black" against their own agents...

Paranoia...Oh...I'm getting to like this...

Just go a little bit more in depth in a PM for me so I at least have an idea of were the fingers are reaching from.

Trinity Williams

Trinity is from a well to do family and went to college at the best schools. In fact, she has had the best of everything in her life. And she has found it completely boring.

She majored in Drama in college while pulling a minor in art. She has performed in theater but nowhere near Broadway. She found she loved to act and had a flair for theater make up. In fact, she was so good that many of those she performed with requested that she do their make up as well.

The glamor of acting quickly grew as boring as the other aspects of her life and she wheedled Daddy into getting her a job in a more exciting career. Wanting to please his only daughter, he pulled some strings and got her hooked up in a small government office. Which, of course was boring! Being an analyst did not bring any excitement into her life and she quickly looked for something that would spice up her life.

Right now she is doing side work for some investigations firms which gives her a bit more excitement, even if most of it is voyerism and photography. Still, it uses her talents more then her desk job does.

Just one of my characters...

Real Name: Ivan Grisha
Name YOU know his as: Mark Thompson

Age: 50, but youthful. Could pass for 45. Full head of hair and no belly.

Mark joined the FBI in 1974 as a field agent and had a distinguished carrer as a technical service agent, was briefly on HRT, then blew out a knee and came back as a counter inteligence agent working on some of the most sensitive aspects of Soviet penetration into the American Inteligence comunity.

He was one of the people who was credited with helping catch John Walker.

But its all just a facad.

The Soviets, and he thinks of himself as a Soviet, not a russain, best way to avoid a countries inteligence service from catching their agents is to have their people in counter-intelgence positions, and thats just what Ivan did.

For the past 30 years he has been building his cover, never once giving it away.

Recently he got a call asking if Mat was home. He had been activated.

He picked up a message and when he decoded it, he learned what his superiors wanted. What luck, because the FBI has to investigate this crime as Cal Tech does some very sensitive stuff...

Ivan(Mark) has all the resources available to a FBI agent working with Top Secret cases, things that are code word sensitive.

His biggest problem is that after living in the USA for so long...he isn't sure he wants to answer the call of a dead agency...

If he is found out, he will go to prison, unless he can make a deal. To do that, he needs the disk, the laptop and any other bargaining chips he can get his hands on.

All this he has to do with his partner, a young, eager, bright and hungry agent 3 years out of the academy.

I was wondering if their was any renewed intrest in this thread.

To start it out, we can keep the double dealing and back stabbing to a nice, healthy minumum while things get started, and slowly grow into mindfucking, and just plain fucking, each other.

In addition, not everyone has to be a 3 faced, 4 hearted, back stabbing spook.

You could be an honest cop, local fed who really is a fed loyal to the USA, or military officer who doesn't have a tripple agenda of securing the disk from foreign agents, cutting out the civilian agencies and keeping it for their own service just to fuck those assholes who don't wear YOUR uniform. (You know, the uniform that the Real Men wear...)
