OOC – Three Nights of the Moon: Hallow’s Eve – casting call

That special time of year is once more drawing near, when pumpkin moons rise over naked tree branches and the chill wind brings half-whispered screams of madness. Yes, it's the fall TV season again, but more important, it's getting near to Halloween.

Welcome back to the tale of Dr. Emil Dresden and his lovely bride-to-be, Ghislaine the Disembodied Brain. It has been a year since the doctor’s unsuccessful attempt to unite Ghis’s brain and a carefully-pieced-together corpse. Now both of them are ready for a new experiment, but the story isn’t theirs alone.

This story is a takeoff on the classic horror movies of the ’30s/40s. Think Young Frankenstein. The classic characters can appear: mad scientist, created creature, werewolf, hunchback, gypsy... You know the drill. As far as technology, assume the equivalent of what was around in the late 1930s/early 1940s.

I know it is sometimes difficult to have writers who can sustain their roles through the end of a story. Since this tale will have a definite ending, I encourage those who wish to join to please commit themselves to seeing their character through to the end. Of course, if RL gets in the way we’ll deal with it; just keep the communication lines open with the rest of us through this OOC thread.

If you would like to join, please PM me with your character idea. Once we agree on the character and what it’s up to, it can be posted here.

When creating your character, stick with how they have been defined in the old black & white movies. In fact, I’ll be imagining the whole story in black and white, and that may help you too. This is meant to be a campy gothic horror story. Don’t be afraid to show a sense of humor, while keeping the appropriate atmosphere.

On the question of violence — If necessary. I don’t see any reason why any characters need to be hurt badly, let alone killed. If you do think that violence will move along a certain part of the story, just be sure you have permission for the actions from the other player who would be affected. Again, keep in mind the overall tone of the tale.

The story will take place over three days, from midnight to midnight during the autumn full moon. The location is an ancient mountain castle surrounded by old Slavic forest. There is an asylum and a village somewhere nearby.

Here's a quick summary of our mad scientist:
Dr. Emil Dresden is a believer that anything under the sun or moon can be recreated in the laboratory. A highly skilled surgeon, he taught at Oxingham University for several years until his fiancée was involved in a tragic accident. His classes became erratic and he started taking odd jobs to supplement his income, such as radio repair, ditch digging, and cemetery delivery. Rumors abounded, and he was asked to leave the university in disgrace. He dropped out of sight for several months until it was reported that a curious land transaction had taken place, and the doctor had packed everything up to move to some distant eastern-European country. The faculty and students mostly breathed a sigh of relief, although a few of his closest friends (very few) regretted losing his unique viewpoint on the world. It has been approximately five years since he took up residence in the castle.

Emil is tall, about 6'2", and lean, weighing about 195. His straight dark hair is usually unruly (unless posing for a picture), a shock of it perpetually hanging over his forehead. In town he dresses formally, jacket, vest and string tie.

A girl's gotta get a head in this world...

Ghislaine is the disembodied fiancée -- the love of Dr. Dresden's life -- yet there she sits, an experiment in a jar left too long on the shelf.

Imprisoned in her crystal tower. Alone. Waiting to be set free to chase the rainbows that have been shimmering dimly through the murky walls of her existence since the the day of her accident...

(Oh, did I forget to mention she's a real brain?) ;)

Rodney, the Monster

It's that time of year already????

Rodney is Dresden's manservant, butler and chaffeur. A disformed gentle giant whose body may remind you of a patchwork quilt, so many scars resembling stitches on his face and body.

But Rodney is also something else. Once a friend of Dresden's from Oxingham University, A tragic accident left him clinically dead, his body crushed. Only Dresden managed to save his life, by making him the first experiment of putting a living brain into another body. In this case, a body made up of various different parts, some of which were not exactly human.

At first, the experiment seemed a success. Rodney's new body was devilishly handsome. But then all his new parts started to react against each other. Only a special chemical concocted by Dresden managed to save him. A chemical which he has to be administrated to him on a daily basis if he is to stay alive. Unfortunately, it is also a chemical without its own deadly side-affects, resulting in him mutating into the creature he is today.

Now totally dependant on this drug and too ugly to return to the outside world, the gentle giant has to stay at Dresden's lair. His only hope and salvation is for Dresden to be able to fix the damage done.

Good ol' Rodney. I'm glad you revived him, Tib! Get it? Revived? Huh? Sorry, too much coffee too early. Speaking of which, there's no reason that the doc couldn't have modified the method that Rodney receives his daily "fix" into something better than an injection. Such as....

Smedley Grovell

Smedley Grovell, a rat faced little man, unclean, uncouth, with an odor that reached you ten paces before he did. When he spoke he had the habit of gnawing on the wishbone of some unknown fowl. He stayed in a small shack just outside the castle since coming into the employ of Dr. Dresden. He liked to think of himself as the procurer of hard to find parts, although for him, the graveyard was full of parts. Food, as well as shelter was provided by Dr. Dresden, but Smedley did on occasion find fresh meat for his stew pot. In fact, Dr. Dresden had told him it was time to increase the body count. Young attractive females are what the Dr. wanted. Only problems was that young healthy women where not exactly falling dead on request, but Smedley had his ways. He always had his ways, especially when a bonus in gold was promised.

Just give Smedley time, I sure he’ll grow on you, or something growing on him with grow on you. You’ll come to love him, I just know it.

Cap: Ha! Ha! and bloody Ha!

Gray: I am told that Maid loves things growing on her. ;)

Actually, Tib, I believe that Maid prefers to feel things growing in her.

GB, Smedley's a great, obviously needed character with a wonderfully disgusting description. Welcome!

Introducing --

-- The Madman!

The asylum records list him as Subject 17. He had lived there since his early teens, sent there by his terrified parents, frightened neighbors, and angry judge. He was incurable, psychotic, a sociopath without empathy for anything or anyone except bugs. Generally not a danger unless confused, although there is no guarantee and that's why he was constantly kept in the straightjacket. But even the best prison has a weakness, and he was very aware in his madness, and a quick learner. A new guard was duped and left for near dead as the madman ran off into the thick, wild woods. He doesn't know how long it's been since then, but he discovered the castle and has been exploring around it, stealing food where he can (usually from the village dump). He is very curious and has periods of sheer lunacy although at times he appears completely normal. He is lean and wiry, a few inches under six feet, and his beard grows scraggly, with tusklike tufts of hair sprouting from his jaws and chin. He has seen Smedley and the shack, but hasn't approached him or spoken with him yet.

Francis Stine has arrived!

Francis is in search for her twin brother, Frankie Stine Jr.. She was sent by her parents, Count and Countess Eddie and Annabelle Stine to drag his shameless heiry behind back to the Stine Castle. Rumors had circulated all across the Slovakian East that he had converted to Judaism, hence the name changed to Franklin Stein to disassociate himself from the overbearing regal Stine throne. The family name has been disgraced, but not enough to leave the throne.

Of course, Francis doesn’t really care what her brother is doing. This is the first time she’s been outside of the Stine Castle -- Unchaperoned! So, this is like spring break to her.

Futile hints from Frankie’s diary led her to the doorsteps of the Dresdin Castle. He’s always wanted his chin shortened, and Dr. Dresdin’s famous surgical skills was well known throughout Eastern Europe.

Right away…the gothic surroundings welcomed her, making her feel like home. Not only that – there was hot guys there. Especially the shy one with the mutated face.

Francis figured that since she’s there --- she might as well get a makeover. A whole body makeover!

And as for the not so usual occurrences at the Dresdin castle -- nobody/nothing can top her family when it comes to measuring weirdness.

The Madman is also convinced that his Master is awaiting him. He doesn't know who the Master is or what he/she looks like. But he's gleeful at the thought that the Master will come and reward him. Reward him for what is anybody's guess.

Welcome back, Frau Blickberg....... Hmm, the horses are acting up again.

Chanaud, the doctor never thought about plastic surgery before. But it's ]i]soo[/i] logical.

RB, your madman should be... interesting. He likes bugs, eh?

There's a couple more characters on their way, and I think we'll be ready to start the show in a few days. It's a good cast with good writers. I'm looking forward to this!

Jacqueline Laughton

Jacqueline has just recently shown up at the Dresden castle as the Doctor’s new laboratory assistant. She’d been a student at Oxingham University which is where she had first heard of Dr. Dresden. Even though he’d been forced to leave in disgrace there was no hiding his exemplary talents as a surgeon. Despite the scandalous rumors Jacqueline seemed to become a bit obsessed with Dr. Dresden and when she’d gone out of her way to become his lab assistant. She tends to be a bit unfocused and easily distracted. Her eagerness and the way she always follows directions to a tee. Though she has found Dr. Dresden to be quite nice she’s not really sure what to make of his fiancée or the other members of his household.

Darren Silken.
Mayor of the nearby village

He's around 38, and very popular in the community. He hasn't had much trouble, except for the occasional beast that comes wandering into town. He just wants to keep things nice and calm.
Of course, sometimes, that requires doing something less than nice or calm.
Every once in a while, if the local villagers have a problem, he fixes it. At times, this can be as easy as having a nice conversation, or making a new rule...
But, other times, when someone becomes stubborn, or unruly, more desperate measures are needed. More than once, he's gathered pitchforks and torches together to track down anything that isn't normal.
Cause that's what we all want, isn't it? Normal.

Ha ha ha.

Jenn and Pooh, thanks for playing! Your characters shoudl add some interesting choices to the action. I'm being sent to the city tomorrow (a day away from the office, yay!), but I plan to start the story here on Friday. Thanks for your patience all, and let's get ready for the show!

Hee hee! Here comes the wolfman!

Well, warewolf more accuratly.

"Running Wolf", or "Wolfy" to his master, is a native of Central America. Me underwent an animal bonding ritual while he was still with his tribe which ionvolved the scarring of sacred runes onto the left side of his face. He is powerfully built with long, tied back black hair and pierceing blue eyes. He dresses in the local attire that his master, the good Dr Dresden has given him

He can shift between his human and wolf forms with a degree of speed. His wolf form is large, with black and silver fur with the visable ritual scars on his face.

He enjoys working for the Dr, even partaking in games of "fetch" with his patients...

And welcome, Screech. What evil castle would be complete without its resident werewolf?

An excellent start, my dear Captain, et al!

I shall have my post up by the weekend's end! Perhaps during tomorrow night's game.

Apologies. For some reason I am not getting email notifications for this thread or the main. :( Is anyone else having the same problem?
