Okay, so I'm 11 votes behind and I'm begging for more votes. If anyone knows anyone else who might be inclined to vote, ask 'em please.

I have free stories for all voters, so if your friends need encouraging bribe'em with that! *LOL* PM me for my email addy, if people vote and tell me they get the free stories, an entry into a print book draw and now I've passed 500 votes (the mind boggles) a draw to win a 1 thousand word personalised story written by me.

I see there is still no reference to actually reading the stories. This is what corrupts and makes a joke of a short story contest. Sort of silly, isn't it, when you think of it from a literary standpoint?

I'd go and read and vote if it wasn't certain your competition is doing the same and that this isn't really about the stories at all.

These competitions are never about the stories. Just like at Lit, it's a huge popularity contest. *shrug* It's more of a marketing thing than anything else.

We've talked about contests before, here and elsewhere - the only way to do a fair writing contest is to do it blind and have it judged, not voted on. Even the Epic Award (they just notified finalists yesterday) which is judged, is still not fair. You'll notice board members or very active members win a lot.

Precisely. It's not about the stories--or what the contest claims it's all about. But that's because it has been/is being corrupted.

Oh, blimey am I the only person who believes people will read before they vote
automatically? I mention my story as a free read in most places, but here, well, you're all authors you can work it out for yourselves *LOL* Also, we're in round 4. I assume most folks will have read the story before and so at this point it is just voting.

I completely agree with Selena's point too. The only way to have a contest based solely on the writing is to have it blind. Otherwise you're going to get people voting for their friends and favourites and if you're in a contest that isn't anonymous then you'd be a blind fool not to call on your friends, fans and acquaintances to vote for your story, if they're so inclined.

As the ARE contest is tagged as one of story quality, I'll wait until a contest on "Best Self-Promoter" rolls around. You are both superb at that. (Which is a compliment when it's self-promotion that's center stage).
