Today marks 29 years for my husband and me. Sometimes it seems hard to believe that we've put up with each other for that long...waiting for the main chance and enjoying what we could get hold of along the way. Times of relative flushed-ness, times of definite strapped-ness. Seeing one child (mine, but he adopted her and she's always been a true daughter in his eyes) leave the nest and have her own loves, problems, career etc. to work out. Trying our damnedness to steer the child we had together (who arrived at the very nadir of our fortunes) through the tempests and hidden reefs of a world that sometimes has scant regard for an invisible disability. Seeing him grow up to be sweet, talented, true-hearted and unexpectedly handsome. Successes and failures. Depression and elation. Stupid shit. Anger and forgiveness.
For our 25th anniversary, we went to Wild Adventures in Valdosta, GA. Yes, we had the son with us. He said it was the most fun he'd had in years. We did have fun, but face it, if you've got a teenage boy with you, it's not very romantic, especially if you all occupy the same room for the sake of economy. Yes, we did do it, but needless to say, we had to be vewy, vewy, vewy quiet (We're huntin' orgasms).
It's also needless to say that we want to make a somewhat bigger splash for our 30th. After all, it's not everybody who makes it that long. We've seen many a couple that seemed to have more going for themselves than we did end up in Splitsville.
We've still got to work around an unknown, probably slender budget. So far, we've thought of the following:
All other suggestions welcome within reasonable limits. For example, the idea dreamed up by Sidonie Taulbe in "Terry's Last Day at Work" to celebrate her and her husband's 30th annversary would be a non-starter for us. I might enjoy it, but my husband would not.

We've still got to work around an unknown, probably slender budget. So far, we've thought of the following:
- Jamaica again
- Somewhere else in the Caribbean
- Cancun
- Pike's Peak
- The Broadmoor
- Prince Edward Island (yes, I know the husband hasn't read any L.M. Montgomery, but it's said to be some of the most beautiful country in the western hemisphere)
- The Appalachian or the Smoky Mountains
- A cross-country train ride (you can see stuff on the way that nobody sees from the Interstate, and certainly never from the air)
- A cruise. It's just that, you know, a couple on their 30th anniversary on a cruise seems like such a cliche.
